Lucrezia, you are a shining example of what makes SL great!
What a generous, cool thing to do. I wish I could have had this when I was newer than I am now. Thanks for all your hard work! |

Thank-you for the newbie guide (informative, helpful; love my hair - thanks for including that information about free quality hair ).Possible additions: I received two folders from a fella that kept changing avatars every two seconds that were a great help in learning about SL and deciding to stay longer. Both folders contained landmarks. One was called "Clubs", and the other was called "Nice Places" (which, oddly enough, also included some clubs). A folder of "nice places" might be a nice addition to the newbie guide - something in addition to the freebie LM ones (do not recall if Sarah Nerd's freebie place is among the LM's included in the newbie guide - if not I'd also include it - much better than the other two freebie places I visited; didn't like one because it was just boxes with hover text without any idea what was in the boxes and the other one had some interesting freebies, but didn't know what to do with them). I would include Greenies and those LM's included in the main notecard in a "nice places" folder. Loved the tea house, neko shrine, giant house sim (Greenies), and seeing the "nice places" greatly impressed me after all that time stuck in "welcome areas" with nude men running around with giant erect fake looking attachments (since then I went to one place where the men were also nude, and had visible attachments, but the attachments matched their skin and shape and were not erect - greatly impressed with their restraint; and I have no idea why I'm adding this part). I would also include a LM to "The Pond". First major sim I visited and the one where people were very helpful, so I am probably biased. The above is just something I thought of as I was running around this forum and saw this thread. I will need to get back in world to think more about specific comments on the newbie kit. You're most welcome. So glad the hair worked out!! It's all about the hair ![]() My original kit had raw landmarks, but then I accumulated so many good ones, I had to put them on a notecard (SIDE NOTE: The kit is intended to be given as a folder of complete information and items as well as be able to be contained in a box for taking -- boxes can only house so many items so I had no choice but to either have a lot of boxes or put the landmarks into a notecard which would be considered one item). So now they're sorted into two notecards and four sections: Help, Relaxing Places, Freebies, Shopping. However, if there is room left over for items, I like your idea of having a folder of key landmarks too! Thanks. And thanks about the Greenies and The Pond tip. Thank you!!! Any review and suggestions are good. _____________________

Thanks to all for your kind words, suggestions and support. I think I'm caught up with everyone. I'll incorporate all your suggestions this week as I receive them and hopefully will have something concrete and more or less final (I'll keep updating it as time goes on) by this weekend!!
Cheers and thanks! You've all made this kit what it is and will be. Truly. _____________________

in it, have you added ways newbies can create simple things so they don't have to buy? or, at least, where to find the info to do that?

Darn, I really need to get in world to look at that kit again, sorry
Not sure if you included this tip, but something about being very aware of prim count in the items bought should be mentioned. I picked up a bunch of stuff from lucky chairs and freebies that were nice and all, but used lots of prims. With only 100 prims to work with (thank-you very much for the free apartment . . . um, am I not allowed to name names in the forum?), I started building my own 1 prim stuff and ended up with a rapidly filling up apartment with a much lower prim usage than otherwise might have been the case. That allowed me to actually keep the much nicer looking 6 prim sofa and 6 prim bed that I built. Oh, and another hint to include . . . um, maybe. Maybe not in a newbie kit. Well I'll say it anyway. When building be aware that you are not stuck with stretching and thinning squares or triangles or the like, you can also "cut" or "hollow" the prims to create other shapes. Edited to note that I did not see the prior two (or more?) responses before I posted this messsage ![]() _____________________

in it, have you added ways newbies can create simple things so they don't have to buy? or, at least, where to find the info to do that? Well I have landmarks and information on building, scripting, texturing. This is not intended to be a manual -- that would be far too overwhelming for a new resident. And I certainly don't wish to reinvent the wheel. There are a tonne of good resources out there. What this kit is intended to do is give all sorts of options and resources for those who wish to explore them. If someone doesn't wish to build, they can ignore those landmarks. If someone has lots of disposable income and wants to set up land and go shopping, they can do that. etc. I hope that makes sense. _____________________

Well there was that aspect
Huge amount of information to read in there. I like the arrangment, and break down into separate cards for separate areas of interest. As a new user I admit that I read as much as I could before going off to play, but I like having that information to look over when I want more information about a particular topic. Thank-you for taking the time and effort in making the kit ![]() _____________________

I do mention it on the buying/renting land notecard and say: "The real commodity is not land, but prims. All items (houses, furnishings, toys etc.) require prims and the more prims at your disposal, the more items you can set up. Buyer beware when shopping -- you'll quickly value high quality and low prim items. Budget about 100 prims for each room in a house (easily). Unfortunately, running out of prims also leads to impulse buying and often a raise in tier fees "This probably bears repeating in the shopping area Done. ![]() Thank you again! Glad you're enjoying yourself too!!! And all hail low prim furniture. ![]() _____________________

Glad you're enjoying yourself too!!! And all hail low prim furniture. :-) Oh I see :) Ok, I wasn't thinking about renting or buying land when I was going through the kit the first time, so I saved that one for later. Then I saw a free apartment available, and quickly put in my "bid" to get it. I need to go back and read that card about buying/renting land :) -- "100 prims for each room in a house" . . . and I have 100 total prims for my whole apartment :) . .. which is one room and a balcony . .. :) _____________________

It enabled me to elaborate in the shopping section, which I did. So it's all good. I realize there's a tonne of information but hopefully people read what they need for any given moment... otherwise I think your brains would leak out of your ears after a while (Too Much!). It's my hope that it becomes a good reference after the fact as well. Whatever is needed at any given time or interest, oh, there's the information I need now. ![]() Congrats and the free apartment. That's great! _____________________

! awesome job Lucrezia!_____________________
There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

What a wonderful idea, Lucrezia!!
I would LOVE a copy as well, please. As others have already posted, I too meet a lot of newbies where I work and comb through my inventory to find some lm's or items to give to them. Having it all in one neat package is awesome!!! Hello, hello: I'm finished, I think, with the first really solid revamp of my "newbie kit". If anyone wants to review/vet/pick it apart, IM me or comment and I'll send you a copy in world. I'm looking for a review of the content, usefulness and presentation etc. Thanks in advance to any and all who wish to lend me their eagle eyes and discerning brains! Cheers. |

My husband has a shop we can put it in for free, and I have a small resell store in Cascadia Plaza, which is pretty cheap, so attracts newbies, too. I could also put some in there. |

I'd be more than willing to take a look at this. I could even put it up in the office while it's still around if you like.

Lucrezia,
Last night I boxed up your Kit, wrote a separate notecard on how to open it up, and TP'd over to the Public Orientation Island with my little titler set to "Ask Me For A Free Newbie Orientation Kit!" First off, let me say what a wonderful, thankless job the volunteers there are doing. The place is a madhouse...people TP'ing in on top of other people, people running into other people (some deliberately, most not), naked people (most by accident), and all manner of craziness. All hail the Newbie Helpers! Second... I managed to give away several of the Kits. A few people were brave enough to ask me directly, while I had to offer it to others. Third...there's got to be a better way. Boxing up multiple items is the only way I know of to give somebody something...I haven't managed to figure out how to transfer an unboxed Inventory folder. But, Orientation Island is a "No Build" area, so the newbies can't open their present! And most of them don't know of a place to go where they CAN open it. Do you think maybe I should include a LM to a sandbox or other Buildable area in the cover note? |

I have also sent and received multiple items that were outside both folders and boxes. 3) Yes, include an LM to a buildable area but have it separate - and include in IM something like (to see the items inside this free box, take it to this LM I've also given you . . and here is how to open boxes and see inside them . . .) _____________________

i think i read thru every card, some more indepth than others, but i don't remember seeing where it tells newbies how they can make money. did i miss that?
i hate to bring up the "c" word, but the reality is that if you have no skills, it's one of the only options, outside of working for someone else, and those jobs (quite frankly) are hard to find. especially for a newbie who wants to shop at enkythings. each item is only L$1, but you have to get that L$1 from somewhere, and the fact of the matter is there are people who intend to not invest RL$ but only reinvest L$. _____________________

these items might have been in there, i just missed them. Great job Luc! it's a really worthy set of information that will be very handy to newbies. thanks for taking the time to put it together. _____________________

I made a lot more money playing "find the money tree" than I ever made playing "camp for long periods for little pay." I decided to trying camping because I was going to be "busy" anyway going through my inventory, and figured I'd get paid for it. I only tried it twice, though. The first time I couldn't tell if I did it right as I had no indication that the camping thing even realized I was "camping" (no hovertext saying I was camping . .. .). Second time I earned 2 lindens for 10 minutes (or was it 15 minutes) of rolling around nude on a towel at a nude beach. I was strangely very nervous that I would actually get that 2 lindens and didn't really think I would until I stood up and I was paid. On the other hand I've made 100s of lindens from money trees (mostly by finding fruit that range from 1 linden up to 25 lindens). _____________________

Lexxi, I'll try it! Anything that will remove extra steps is a Good Thing when it comes to newbies. (I think maybe my problem is that I can't drag a whole folder of things into an object's Contents...and I must have been thinking of that when I thought of dragging a folder onto another AV). |
