Clothing folder breaks down to:
Avatars (complete outfits that involve a shape change) Costumes (complete outfits I'd wear on my normal shape, usually stuff you'd find in fancy dress stores) Gowns & Dresses Shoes & Boots Skirts Tops Trousers Skirt & top sets Trouser & Top sets Undies Latex (*sigh* yes, it needs it's own folder. Some people I know it's their entire wardrobe)
A separate top-level folder called 'Body Parts' subdivided into:
Hair Skins Shapes Eyes Other (mostly tails & ears)

In addition to deleting extra hair colors you won't wear, think of all the other things you have a zillion copies of. Hairbases, scripts called "hovertext" that ended up dispensed with stuff you bought because the original package had hovertext over it, notecards that come with clothes that tell you how to resize prims, etc.
My current clothing inventory is broken down like this: -Full Outfits (pants outfits or pants outfits without copiable tops, since I mostly wear pants in SL) -Accessories ---Sunglasses ---Tattoos ---Belts ---Hats -Bathing Suits -Coats (outerwear) -Costumes (includes a handful of non-human avis I have but never wear) -Dresses (all dresses except for gowns) -Gowns -Jewelry -Lingerie -Separates ---Tops ---Bottoms -Shoes (includes boots) -Stockings and Socks -Not being Worn ---Collecting to Archive (no-tran stuff I am not wearing but can't bring myself to delete) ---Give Away (transferable stuff) -To Sort (stuff I haven't gotten around to tidying up yet)
Each of the folders inside these is named prefaced with color, then object description and designer (Purple and Black - Striped sweater - WRONG).
I wish I kept my Objects folder this tidy, now that I think about it. I had my inventory down below 12k before I started picking up stuff from the Peace on Earth hunt, but I'm ruthlessly deleting most of that because I'm afraid of how out of hand my inventory may get otherwise.

From: Eclectic Wingtips Lastly go through your snapshots folder. This can be a fun way to re live memories and a great folder to clean. Load of junk in there. Re name any snapshots your keeping, folder them up in the right folders and delete anything you dotn want
With snapshots - if they are pictures you have taken or any others that you have full perms on, move them into notecards.

From: Argent Stonecutter I throw away landmarks routinely even if I know I'm going to go back to the store because otherwise the "landmarks" pulldown on the map is useless. I really want the option of selecting what folder will be used for the landmarks pulldown. Even when I return to a place, if I do not go there often, the landmarks have a tendency to no longer be valid anyway. I kept many of them more as a reminder of a place's name than as a true LM. My latest strategy is two-fold: If I actually go to the place frequently, I keep the LM and use sub-folders under Landmarks to categorize it. If I only want to remember the name of a place and just search for the current location, I add the name, with the original landmark, into a notecard that is placed within the proper sub-folder in Landmarks - and then delete the LM itself.

I delete LMs (or move to Landmarks if I don't have one and want it), non-instructional notecards, scripts, and picture textures that are not for an outfit. If I don't have that hair base, I will keep it long enough to see if I like the eyebrows, as I am still messing with mine.

i gave up organizing my inventory.
i simply type in a color, and find an outfit to match my mood in that way. i love when i put on something totally cute that i didn't even know i owned.

From: LittleMe Jewell A few of us were talking inworld about what this POE hunt is going to do to our inventories. I realized that with all the various holiday hunts, my inventory would likely break thru the 60k mark and I cringed. I have a lot of hair folders that I have not cleared out the colors I will never wear - did that to about a dozen styles and quickly dropped about 2k. Then, after Honey deleted her entire Demo folder, I decided that too many of mine were probably no good anymore anyway, so I also deleted the whole folder -- another 4k gone like that. I am way too much of a pack rat I have found one thing that helps with that fear of passing through 60K. Break your computer. Get locked out of SL for weeks at a time (like, say, me). I so wanted to go on these holiday related hunts, and parties. Ah well. Stuff to delete? Look for scripts, put "delete" into search box. I had a lot of scripts that were labeled that - they are those scripts that send you stuff if you rez the box you purchased. And/or filter search for scripts. Delete away. Filter your inventory so that only landmarks show up. Delete all but one copy of each. That will really cut down on your inventory (unless you have been keeping up with each new LM that shows up with each purchase). Do the same with notecards (filter for notecards). If you own 2 items from the same place, do you need two notecards saying thanks? 20? 150? 1? heh. Demos can hide themselves, so even if normally keep all demos in one folder, might try putting "demo" into inventory search to make sure you have deleted all of them. If you have any vehicles, and you drive them - look at them. Make sure you have one copy that works, delete the rest of the same vehicle. Point here is that most vehicles are copy. So you drive, stop, get out, pick up the car/boat/plane/etc. and end up with another copy. So look at your vehicles, and all other items that have copy permissions set. (edit: this is another time I needed to finish reading the thread first. many of my ideas were already mentioned)

From: LittleMe Jewell With snapshots - if they are pictures you have taken or any others that you have full perms on, move them into notecards. Some people believe that putting items in prims solely can cause them to be erroneously deleted by the asset database's garbage collector. I don't know if there's any truth to that, but could the same concern exist for putting images solely in notecards? To all, I'm having a tough time believing that inventory size should affect rezzing and TP times personally. I'm not saying that people haven't noticed a difference at times, but there are so many variables beyond user control that it's tough to know if the cause is what you think it is.

With the same computer, same settings, same sims, same activity, same user load: Sonia was a lot faster in moving around, rezzing, teleporting after her inventory was eaten. Still faster than Lexxi with same computer, settings, people load, sims. Oh, and it might just be a fluke with how it happened with Sonia, but everything not in a system folder got eaten by SL, while those items in system folders seemed to have had a better chance of not being eaten by SL. I keep everything in system folders, and I haven't noticed anything eaten since with either Lexxi or Sonia, so I do not know if that "make subfolders of system folders instead of brand new folders" matters or not.

From: Marianne Little Perfect, why have I never thought of that! Do the same with Landmarks as well. You can group them in a notecard like Clothing or Shoes or whatever then you can add little notes in it as well.... I do this for certain clubs I visit adding the times of the events

I do this for certain clubs I visit adding the times of the events I've recently started doing this, but only with landmarks that I don't use all the time -- that lazy part of me wants to be able to quickly double-click the LM to TP rather than open a notecard, click the LM, then click the Teleport button.
