My biggest concern is what type of recourse will basic members have if they are accused of any of the above activities? Not having access to support, who will they plead their case to?

i agree this could be used very badly for griefing.

I also wonder why it is anyone else's business what people do in SL? If it is consentual who cares?

Will short avies be constantly reported as child avies?

What is graphically violent? Shooting?

Rape? Um...last I checked you couldn't actually rape anyone in SL unless it is consentual because pose balls have to be used.

and finally RL pictures are against the rules now? Are they taking the 1st life tab and ability to post a picture there out of the profile now?

This is the stupidest thing ever. if it were 24/7 monitoring of griefing complaints that would be something good...what people do in their private Second Lives is their own business.

Also with the coming verification, why is this even an issue? If you don't want to view this kind of content then don't verify and you can't accidentally stumble upon it.

Additionally, when questions and complaints go unanswered all weekend long, I very much resent that this will be given such 24/7 attention. Thanks a lot! So sorry, your sim must stay down for the weekend but if you shoot someone you'll be immediately banned??

So LL Preeeen(Preteen)Sluts as a group is OK. What goes on in the corner of nemo sim, is ok.....but what consenting adults, yes consenting, even though one side plays at non consen, is not ok?

The phrase "Real-life pictures" in the blog post is a phrase in a sentence:

Love it. The worst I've ever done is throw toilet paper at someone and I'm suddenly subject to ARs and bans for something that was peachy-keen not twenty-four hours ago.

I find it a remarkable coincidence that both LL and LiveJournal would make incredibly boneheaded moves on the same day. The internet seems to be entering some very dangerous times for those who believe in freedom of expression.

The first paragraph of the blog entry is:

One hopes it is still just a matter of "arresting twice the usual number of suspects," but this slope is beginning to feel kinda slippery to me. Especially with the encouragement to rat out your neighbors in the second paragraph, as covered in earlier posts.

Presumably LL is responding to outside pressure, since this is clearly not the kind of thing they really want to be spending their time on, but what outside pressure? It's one thing if we are just dealing with yellow journalists, who will eventually go yapping off after other stories once LL has established its bona fides. It's another thing if it is from the corporate interests that LL is intent on courting for its future growth. If that is the case, then - Houston...We have a problem.

"Your World, Your Imagination" has been spoiled. Not by Linden Lab, but by creeps who continue to push the envelope. Yes, I'm going to keep harping on this, as it's true. Do you folks want Second Life to be here when you wake up from your real world slumber? I do. I am NOT going to give it up to depictions of child abuse, rape, or other forms of sexual violence which people seem to think is "okay" in Second Life. Sorry, no dice here folks. There are limits to expression, and the freedom to indulge in it. I FULLY support Daniel's blog post. Enough is enough.

i know many ppl find it a paranoid train of thought, but verification + transaction history + asset server + climate of a witch hunt+ grid shepard = scary stuff. i think linden would have no problem handing asset server data over to the us government (i doubt theyd even need a court order). while grid shepard itself may be not be the big threat, it is proof that a third party can collate endless inworld data about you. im sure the us/chinese/any government could put one together (they probably have already.
its very orwellian and it makes me very uneasy. yeah its probably not normal thinking to most, but id really hate to find out i was right about this on my next arrival to LAX.

so is it wrong if my hubby and I RP rape in our own RL bedroom? What is the difference between that and doing it in our SL bedroom? I agree that the age play is a bit offensive and some countries have even made it illegal, but I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with the rest if people keep it in private, keep it in mature sims, and everyone else keeps out of others business. If I pay for land and I put up ban lines for privacy, and someone butts into my business and "sees" our kinkiness...well I should be reporting them for not respecting my very obvious call for privacy. If you go out of the way to see this kind of stuff then you deserve to see it...it wasn't intended for your eyes.

Until they clarify their definition of broadly offensive, I'm going to just do as I've been doing. I'll report that which goes on in the public areas or PG areas.. the rest is none of my business.

It is NOT MY JOB TO POLICE SL. (Sorry, I'm annoyed by the idea.) That is the Linden's job, its what I pay them to do. This means, I'll help out, when it's possible.. but the rules as they stand are too vague and thus, impossible to uphold.

I agree that some things are offensive, such as actual child porn and a few other things, but with the way things are going, SL is just going to be another NEOPETS. Yeah, that started out as an more mature site, by two college students as a form of entertainment for people their age. Well, guess what? They got bought out by a company and started getting commercialized, companies buying their way in via small ads and games with their logos. And they got aimed at the kids.. so the adults got shoved out of the way. I really don't want history to repeat itself with something I love being in.

So, if I seem to overreact, well, that's why. I love SL. I really do. I hate to see it become the 'pure' that means adults can't be adults because OMG, we're gonna be banned!!

This pretty much puts Gor out of business in SL I would think. While I understand the intent of Zaphods post and agree to an extent, if the alternative is a sanitized PG corporate wasteland, with spies on every corner, I'd rather SL just implodes and I'll seek my entertainment elsewhere.
