Of these I think A is more likely - (on a proportional basis)

Since Blacks only make up about 15% of the US population It stands to reason theres going to be significantly less Blacks than whites of US residents.

In European countries the Proportion is much smaller.

African Countires are not heavily represented in SL yet.

The number of hispanics would be pretty close to blacks for the US, while other Minority groups are smaller.

However SL is a hit in Argentinia and Brazil. I have met quite a few people from those countries.

And of course there are quite a few Residents from Japan and China.

I kind of think as SL becomes more popular with places out side of the US and the EU non caucasian avatars will increase in numbers.

-------------------------
Whites are still 2/3 of the US population. Though the percentage has been decreasing over the years.

From http://usinfo.state.gov/xarchives/display.html?p=washfile-english&y=2006&m=July&x=20060707160631jmnamdeirf0.2887079

As of July 2005, the Census Bureau reports a total U.S. population of 296.4 million. Of this total, Hispanics comprise 42.7 million Americans while blacks, including both African Americans and more recently arrived Africans and blacks of Caribbean origin, total 39.7 million. The Census identified 14.4 million Asians, 4.5 million American Indians and Alaska natives and nearly 1 million native Hawaiians and Pacific islanders.

--------------------------

I was unable to find any similar statististics for the European Union as a Whole - But for the UK it would seem that 87% of the population in England and 96% in Wales is White.

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/profiles/commentaries/ethnicity.asp

--------------------------

Since the US has such a huge mass of urban/sub-urban sprawl there no reason to think that just becuase cities have higher concentrations of minorities that they will be more likely to be represented.

Thx for doin all the research, yep sounds about right.

...but what about ...roaches??? IT'S A CONSPIRACY

I second FD about older, & other av types but it's the individual users' choice, & most folks just wanna either blend in, be a "Super-Me!", or make a outlandish fictional av, which is understandable.

My av has pretty much always either been me "on steroids", or just the closest I could get to the RL me...even though I do have a "costume collection"...gotta love the Tooter & Grendel's roach avs

I would love to see more older avatars, more homosexuality and multi-gender people that doesn't involve the female or shemale stereotypical , more men then women here too but I doubt that is going to happen for same reason their isn't as many people of color here.

Maybe it's just me and my line of work, but I see plenty of homosexuality and it's quite commonplace. And most of them are not stereotypical "shemale" kinds that you speak of. Maybe my "effeminate" builds (as I have been told by others) just attract more of those kinds of people. But I see it so often, it's just normal.

Hmm.

Kinda seems like most of us still kinda have our lil' "cliques" and favorite spots we go, & usually get a skewed perception of the SL...community/demographic as a whole.

I bet if my av was an asian lookin' "grunge" style guy w/ the build of your average High School skater type kid, I would see more of the homosexuality & what not...I notice certain fetishes are mroe prevalent in certain subcults in SL...you sure as hell don't see too many "Bikers" w/ a Neko tail...or too many "Gangsta Vampires"...

Weird sociology in SL...I love it, lot more diverse than RL. All I gotta do is go sim-hoppin' anytime I start gettin bored & I find a whole new "side" to the community.

Sometimes the groups get a lil' stagnant or whatever, but for the most part, the RL phenomenon of subcultures & cultures splittin' into smaller pieces & "cross-pollination" runs rampant a lot more, w/ all the anonymity.

One example would be ...well I dunno if this is "new", but the fact that every time I go shoppin now, I find avs w/ prim boobs as big as my avs' whole torso, who usually say they say bi males in the profile. ...never saw that before last month...I gotta remind myself every once in a while ta go outside my "neighborhood" to see what's goin on around the Grid.

We got the same problem in Chicago to an extent, there's still a lotta folks here who live just about thier whole life in a 10-20 block radius, even w/ all the commuters & tourists.

The problem I see is that a lot of skins (actually all skins) have a muscular chest and abs painted on for men and large boobs and thin waist painted on for women.

If we ever finally get additional avatar texture layers it would be easy to do things like the breast shadows as a separate layer so it would be easy for people to mix and match the components that work best for their particular shape. Unfortunately, as the system works now, for every variation you have to assemble a whole new skin, so if you have a skin with say 20 makeups available and wanted to add optional shading for smaller breasts, that's 20 more skins to do instead of just one overlay. Add in more options like a few different eyebrow colors and the numbers expand exponentially. It just gets to be too much work so you aim for what you think will please the largest number of people.

The day I arrived in SL (November 2004) I realised I could make my own hair texture. This was before prim hair of course. I hopped over to photoshop, took a hair texture I had made for a 3d model I had made years before, coloured it a cheerful red and imported it.

At this time hardly anyone had red hair. People often commented on my interesting look. I coupled the hair with very pale skin and bright green eyes.

Nearly four years on and I still mainly wear my 'trademark' red hair - though now it is beautiful prim styles from various makers. My skin has darkened a little - I don't look so ill now.

But often Elgyfu is black. NOT African-American, as people have insisted on trying to catogorise me, but African, probably Nigerian (I have very distant Nigerian ancestry). I adore darker skins, I have always thought that dark skinned women are so beautiful and smooth looking.

Many of you may know my 'Pharoah' look. As I sell a lot of Egyptian artifacts, I do love to dress the part when working on that island. Ahh, rich dark skin, bright eye make-up and those luscious clothes! Yummy :-)

I also have a treasured Indian skin, which I wear with my beautiful collection of saris.

But what I would love is a quality Japanese skin - not geisha, I have them, but a soft coloured skin, with that unique look of a Japanese girl. Anyone know where I can get one?

For me, SL is a chance to be different to my real self. Here I can be that ebony skinned beauty with long raven hair and bottom-less eyes. Or the Indian princess that I dreamed of being as a child. Or the pale skinned Celtic lass with the long red hair and green eyes, of course. Oh, and don't forget the days I am goth, or neko, or vampire, or a dragon or a tiny weasel................ hehe

Each race has its own beauty. I want to look at my avatar and see the characters who inhabit my imagination - the ladies I would love to be myself.

In real life I am still a tubby, pale, 40 year old English woman, hehe. But I know that inside I am a whole world of beautiful princesses just dying to get out. And here, in SL - they do!!!

I have always been Asian
I used a combination of Cherry Tokyos shapes and skins by Nyte n day. I have to say out all Asains in sl I think my avator is Unmistakably asian looking.

you just have to really play with putting the right skin on the right shape.

Some of you act like it's something new, something rare to see other races in sl besides your own. You're always in the same rut. You never venture into other places, other clubs and venues of other races like blacks, Latinos and others.

Many of you don't ever visit these places because you're intimidated although you'll never admit it publicly. Then you come here acting like you're amazed you saw another race being it's something very rare and unseen in sl.

Please. That doesn't play anymore.

Ricky .. Are you referring to the recent posters? --

Or the ones you already corrected a YEAR AGO when this thread was made?

I'm not sure the recent posters have said much along the lines you seem to accuse them of.

Personally I'm surprised there aren't many North African/Arabian skins seeing how we are so "popular" in the media.

There are actually a great many of the deep tan/brown skins around. Perhaps the skinners don't like to label them as belonging to a particular race. IMHO, it's not the color of the skin that defines race on an avatar... face shape is much more influential.

Well besides how the people look, also what defines a persons ethnicity is the way they act and their beliefs based on tradition, although I do agree with you Oryx on your comment.

*smile*

I was just talking about the physical appearance of the avatar itself. Absolutely do actions and beliefs define ethnicity. :)
