Mitch Kapor, Chair Linden Lab, welcomed us back after lunch to talk about the state of the virtual world industry. Virtual worlds, he said, are in the same position right now that personal computers were in the 1970s. "I grew up in the 60s. And the thing that [experiencing Second Life] reminded me of was a drug experience, back in the days that we didn’t know how dangerous recreational chemicals could be. But all the early adopters had some sort of mystical experience. The form it took was different, but all felt like they had been in the future. It had nothing to do with capital and profits. We’ll get back to that, but what’s driving it is the shared sense by a few hundred thousand crazy people that this is really important. We can’t articulate it or say where it’s going, but people will drop everything and do it. When we look at enterprise, we have to take into account that narrative." ========= Linden is on a bad trip and it's going to get a whole lot worse in the next few years. Under scrutiny by several law agencies and a continued effort by those that see the issues will pose an ever increasing pressure on Linden to "get with the program." While corporate interests may be moving in for the Second Life advertisement boom, within the next three years and with the numerous court cases pending to be filed, corporate business will jump again and rush to protect themselves from the onslaught of negative publicity brought by the media against Linden Labs. The negative publicity will so heavily publicized that it will be a "black eye" to be seen as a corporate interest within Second Life. Linden knows why. It's not any news to them. And it will happen. Eer Mitch, take a toke of reality and get the illegal activity and scammers off your servers before we do it ourselves. If you don't do it, it won't be pleasant when the law does. Thank you, Tracy Welles Hoch Sim Protester ----- Line found, just an addition for Chris. Thank you Chris. ----- http://www.virtualworldsnews.com/2007/06/liveblogging_mi_1.html#more

Err Tracy, was that first quote from a copyrighted story? If so, you need to attribute it to the correct author and publication. To do otherwise is a legal no no.

From: Object Pascale Hello Tracy. Welcome to Resident Answers. (Again.) What exactly is the question you need answering? Hi Pascale, I would like to ask Linden Labs when they will reimburse those within SL for proven fraudulent cases that can be proven. I would also like to ask that Linden Labs not continue on the path they are on by empowering lame land barons with even more power by allowing such to be responsible for any and all Abuse Reporting. Linden continues to pawn off their legal issues on the individual and the activity must be stopped. The question would be, when is it going to take place and how many court cases will have to be filed before they get with the program? Thank you, Tracy Welles Hoch Sim Protest

Right, but LL are the ones who have published this non-attributed copyrighted story, and therefore it is LL who are legally liable, not Tracey. It's their forum afterall, and so they're responsible for any copyright infringement or libel that takes place on it. It's a beautiful system. .

Can you show me where in the ToS it states that it's LL's job to baby-sit us?
People that engage in high-value transactions without benefit of an RL legally binding contract is just ASKING to be ripped off.
A "verbal contract between two avatars" is a joke.
So you were ripped off... I'm sorry. Take your expensive education and be more careful in the future.

This is a question by residents to Linden. Just because Linden creates the forums based on "their perception" of what resident answers and questions are... doesn't make this off topic or mis posted.
I am giving the answers. So consider my post prophesy for what others will soon be asking. This is the residents answer. Thank you for asking the question.

Tracey, SL is an online game - LL should be obliged to re-emburse for lost time due to excessive server instability for example, or repeated extended maintenance periods, but beyond that you are getting what you paid for; access to an online game. You might not like what happens in the game, but the answer then is to stop playing it. Since L$ have no monetary value (check your ToS, you'll find that is the case), losing L$ in game is the SL equivalent of being beaten in an arena battle in World of Warcraft - it's not Blizzard's fault if that happens and it's not Linden Lab's fault if you lose L$ in SL.

So you were ripped off... I'm sorry. Take your expensive education and be more careful in the future. Quite right. SL, thank God, has remained a "limited government" of sorts, where the footprint of the "state" (for want of a better word) has remained small. LOng may it continue.

Oh dear goodness Tracy. You do realize that opening a new thread with the same subject matter as a previously closed thread is an infraction, yeah?
You are barking up the wrong tree here. If you have a claim, allow your attorney to handle the communication with Linden Lab.
You're not doing yourself any favors by continuing this diatribe in yet another thread. Yesterday, it was good fun. REALLY good fun. Today, it is yesterday's news.

From: Najmah Handayani your missingt the whole point, this is for residents to answer other questions posed by residents, sheesh There's no point in trying to correct forum etiquette anymore. People are so angry about whatever their current pet peeve is that they feel that entitles them to ignore all posted guidelines to say whatever they want wherever they feel like. Few seem to bother to look for existing threads before they start duplicates... Few seem to care what the intended purpose of the specific forums are... Few enough inappropriate threads get closed promptly. Obviously, it's become a free-for-all. So many voices... so much noise.

The question seems to ask who we trust in regard to SL. I trust LL to keep SL an open place where people can continue to explore their imaginations. I hope they do not succumb to pressure by those (like Tracy it would seem) who would like to turn SL into a nanny-state.
