Oh, metered teleporting. That means they made sim border crossings flawless and enabled seamless travel to private islands, right? *snork*

I never liked the rating system in the first place. It sucked terribly, and had no real purpose but to waste peoples money on a score counter that decays over time taking heir money with it. If LL can't find a way to improve it, they might as well kill it. I would have much preferred a better system instead, but yea... I'm not the decision maker, they are. I currently have been using the TrustNet system with banlink for my sim. I want to say that i'm glad that those and other systems got recognition in the blog post. However, i would have liked to have some sort of built in rating system which was part of the client. if we all wear these scripted items it's going to cause a even bigger database load.

Never Liked Them ANyways

I never really thought they were useful at all. Its good we are geting rid of them if its going to help on DB load. There is little to no benefit in having them, so we might as well make the rest of SL work better and get rid of useless features.
Plus, its one less thing to break each update!

From: AWM Mars Far as ratings go, although mine are in double figures, my wife's are in the 1,000's... that equates to over 150,000+ L$'s have been spent and wasted.. Those with 1000's of ratings got them when they were much cheaper than $25L - which means they were already overcompensated by the ratings stipend bonus. Even those who gave out $25 L ratings and roughly the rate they got them back before the bonus was eliminated got compensated. I never even had 100 in any catagory and I was having weeks where my stipend was $50L and my bonus 200-300L Since the bonus poofed , think handing out ratings got pretty scarce. Look at how much got wasted by the neg raters when neg rates poofed. Certain anti-sex crusaders must of got pretty upset over it all.

Have the Lindens missed a trick?

I actually, clearly somewhat controversially think that ratings is a GOOD thing! It's a bit like rate this book on Amazon or something
What would revive the system would be to make ratings free, and bring back negative ratings. If you took the L$ transction out of ratings surely that would reduce the server load...?
The thing that would really make this work is if only info-on-file AVs are permitted to rate.
That way no-pays who cause trouble or are annoying rapidly get negative ratings so everybody else can see that they are a nuisance. Of course no-pays who gain ratings are likely to be nice folks and therefore worth talking to...
Rated no-pays are also far more likely to upgrade to a paid account so they can reciprocate in the rating frenzy - which is presumably the end goal of the Lindens.
Just an idea
[off-topic] The L$1 teleportation fee is a great idea - I suspect that alone will massively reduce the server load. [/off-topic]

From: Amy Stork I actually, clearly somewhat controversially think that ratings is a GOOD thing! It's a bit like rate this book on Amazon or something The problem is that on Amazon, the ratings system is integrated with the pages you'd use to buy the books, so when you buy a book, if you want to rate it too the rating system is right in front of you.. and also, rating things rewards you with better recommendations. On SL the problem is that it's not intrinsic or rewarded in this way, so you get strange effects. I think the most well known example is that an escort had a higher Building rating than a professional builder did because instead of spending time building, she was spending time meeting people and getting them to rate her.

From: Brenda Connolly Will they let us buy a monthly Multi Pass...... or a FastPass (ala Disney) so we can have priority when TP'ing. Buying a FastPass means less likely to time out.

[/off-topic] I see your point, but I still think it's a useless sytem in general.Negative ratings, especially if given out without cost, could be wildly misused. I prefer to use my own judgement on who to spend my time with. I am not a big fan of ratings or reviews in RL, ratings here don't mean much to me either. 5 minutes of conversation will tell me whether someone is worth my time.

The ratings going away is pretty trivial - they were not used for much any more. We got along fine without them really meaning anything - for quite some time. The real issue is the Linden endorsed "replacements"

OK I reconsidered my opinion - ratings are pointless after all
