From: Broccoli Curry Actually, the only thing that the blog post changed is that Linden Lab have now chosen *not* to ignore these things that have always been in the community standards as prohibited. Broccoli Bullshit Lewis.. the CS explicitly states thet "broadly offensive content" belongs on Mature Land.. or Private Islands.

From: Warda Kawabata That too gives me the heebee-jeebees. *pouts* You fear red-heads?! But I haven't done nothing.. yet... *mutters and kicks the ropes behind* Well, I did say, yet! Look, we're not happy with LL and they are behaving like my 5 year old child when he does something no one likes, by sticking his fingers in his ears and going, "I can't hear YOU!!" Note, they've limited the number of blog responses to 100? And only a few very brave souls among the Lindens actually read and respond on this forum. (waves to Heretic and others) Now what's left for us to do? Boycott? Not possible for many. Open Letter? Got answered with the obviously standard BS.

I think it's something like Fear, Uncertainty, and Disinformation. Seems to be used a lot in connection with Microsoft press releases.

From: Zaphod Kotobide Yeah. I actually didn't catch the rather significant policy statement in his post the first time around. But there it is, plain as day. I still hold that certain of the more.. over the top.. activities should have no accomodation anywhere in Second Life, but when I caught what Daniel actually said, I immediately understood what all the FUD was about. It took someone (was it you?) pointing it out to me. Sacha first mentioned it but I made a thread over it since it went unnoticed. Im hoping its not a huge policy shift, but rather a misunderstanding of what is allowed. There should be room for the vast majority of sexual content as it exists in Second Life while removing some things, If thats what the Lindens want to do. As it stands now - Theres going to be a some people who see this as free license to start reporting escorts, sex clubs, etc - on Mature land. the responsible Linden's inability to grasp established aspects of Second Life in his written communications troubles me. I hope its just honest mistakes and not deliberate. First neither they seemed unaware or refused to aknowledge the existance of the current "Mature" flag on parcels when discussing their "Adult" flag, and explain the difference. And now this a direct controdiction with previously established policy. If we forums goers can see these obvious disconnects, why cant they? They are being PAID to know. Still it could be an oopsie - and maybe they will do their homework better the next time.

It stands for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt, which is the state of mind a good military commander attempts to instill in the enemy... ....And yes, the call to inform on your neighbor turns SL into Paranoiaville, because you know and I know some will.

Indeed. I had noticed some peculiarities in his posting habits, and now they don't seem peculiar at all. From: Colette Meiji ahh Broccoli is Lewis? everything makes sense now ..

....And yes, the call to inform on your neighbor turns SL into Paranoiaville, because you know and I know some will. I really should have know that, being a history major. I'm sure it came up somewhere. Like in the use of General Patton and his Phantom Army on DDay.

From: Samm Submariner Well, I've been in SL since the blog, and instead of the open friendly environment it used to be, embracing all creeds, thanks to Daniel Linden, from many people I've spoken to, there is an overhanging of fear and suspicion.
People are almost scared to leave locked skyboxes in case they are spotted by maurading groups of vigilantes resulting in summary execution from SL (which is what having your account deleted effectively feels like).
LL - was this your intent, to turn SL from an open accepting environment to one people are now afraid to enter?
The new skies will not disguise the current darkness which overhangs SL The people I talk to are dancing and celebrating.

From: Brenda Connolly The Providers want to clean up the Public areas? 3 cheers, I'll do my part if I see an offense. They want to make sure we aren't being Naughty in our "Private" areas? Don't like it, but it is their sandbox, it's kinda like God knowing what you do , so Ya pays Ya Money, Ya takes Ya Chances. Fair enough. But the call for residents to be the eyes and ears of the Lindens is frightening. Anyone who doesn't see how this can be horribly abused must be locked up in a skybox. Will there be any due process when you are accused of an offense? Will you have a "Day in Court".Will you even be notified of the alleged offense, or just summarily made to disappear? There are already cases where people have been harrased and blackmailed with alleged moral violations. The announcement as released contradicts the TOS already. Will it be re written? Who wanrs Pie? The hysteria over this has focused on the Sex issue, but it goes well beyond that. The social fabric of Our World is going to change way beyond what Our Imagination could ever percieve. It's being foisted upon us in the name of Community, but I think it will do more to Balkanize us than anything else. It's kinda ironic, Second Life getting Moral to appease the Corporations, some of the most Ammoral entities on the planet. I wonder if there will be a moral police? I am from Canada but it seems to me that perhaps citizens from our neighbor to the south are feeling this the most cause of the recent swing to the right. I think that is what I've been missing when I read people's posts that in some way this is happening in RL. It occurs to me that I need to be more sensitive to the experiences of people living in less free situations. I know that in another discussion group some people from down south were expressing how unfree it feels in the country now. Maybe SL represented a refuge from a repressive regime in RL?

Don't believe what you see on TV or in the papers especially from the Hysterical types down here. Or the rantings of spoiled wanna be social anarchists. Freedom is alive and well here in the lower 48, despite The Patriot Act Panic, Needing Passports to enter Canada and Mexico (and Possibly Ohio), and the TSA (Thugs Standing Around) confiscating nail clippers and spring water at airports. Where else but in the Land of the free can you have Starbucks on every Corner (Yuck), Paris Hilton and Gene Simmons TV shows and American Idle. I wonder where James Madison hid Freedom to be idiots in the Constitution.

The story so far: Lindens announce new policy. The more emotional types get upset, and become amateur lawyers. Numerous forum posts spring up about latest policy. Accusations are made from both sides of the argument. The 1st Amendment is referenced, and along the way rampant "Godwinning" occurs. Someone starts a petition to stop the policy change. Someone else threatens to start a class action lawsuit. Lindens move forward with policy change. SL does not come to an end. Equilibrium is slowly restored. Yeah, this episode is a repeat. I've seen it before.
