Anybody remember the Half Life Multiplayer maps titled "Rats". This is so awesome and familiar I plan on running around with my friend later and possibly shooting him onto the stove burner.

From: Lanz Zsigmond beautiful yes, but plain boring after 15min like 80% of the so called creative places in sl. Sorry ... Interesting. I'm the exact opposite. I love the creative places. Taking the Greenies Home for an example, I've been through there several times now, just to explore some more, to meet some of the folks involved, to show it to friends, and to see what's new (there've been a couple different additions since I first went there, like the bootmobile and the hamster balls -- and the little friend under the 'fridge). All told, I've prob'ly spent about a couple hours going through there. Some of my faves, well, I've been through them scores, maybe even hundreds, of times - and for more hours than I wanna count. You might feel a lot different, but dat's been my experience. Mari P.S.: currently this week I'm exploring Corsica and the Japanese regions. Both are cool, but for totally opposite reasons.

i do own a mouse avatar i should use next time i visit. i really liked the greeter system too. Collision based to open a dialog. usually when i arrive at a telehub if i find I'm in a cramped area i usually use my gatet2cam attachment to get out of it, but this time i followed the path and looked around. Was pretty good.

Counterstrike started these "giants" maps. Yes, there are a lot of them. I'm pretty sure this is CS inspired.

Yeah man, they started in Half Life. Long before CS came out. I still have Half Life installed with those maps.

so if youve played rats does that diminish the artistic merit of its sl counterpart?

From: Nina Stepford so if youve played rats does that diminish the artistic merit of its sl counterpart? Not quite sure what your tone is here? Are you saying this in a negative way, or are you honestly asking if after seeing the CS maps, you won't be as impressed with Greenie? I don't remember seeing these maps in HalfLife--HL is single player. Are you talking about Team Fortress? What HL multiplayer game are you talking about?

Original HL was LAN Multiplayer. Not online Multiplayer

From: Broccoli Curry We all have different tastes... that's human nature. Mine just happen to not include clubs and casinos.
Most of the time I keep myself to myself in SL, and don't socialise much to be honest. It gets tired after a while when you keep being hit on by guys with oversize genitalia flapping about.
Broccoli Obviously haven't been going to the "right" clubs Heck I work in a bondage club, and people wandering around with any form of exposed male genitalia, large or small, or told to put it away (except for certain rooms).

rats were in cs. its an honest question. greenie is mighty impressive. far greater a build than i can accomplish. on the other hand, rats was considered a novelty map, not art.

I'm a level designer as well. I think the original rats was more than clever--the reason it's so widespread and popular was because the balance was perfect. Balance is the toughest thing to develop in a MP map. Greenies would be a fun MP "giants" map. Probably not at all balanced though. In Greenies, I'm more impressed with the little alien sets (the toothpaste, etc) than the house they are constructed around.

I think you've illustrated the problem...
07-27-2007 17:34
From: Broccoli Curry ... and saying there's nothing to do in Second Life....
Pull up Map, and enter the region "Greenies"... up will come Greenies Rezzable Home. Teleport there - anywhere, it doesn't matter as it has a landing point set.
Follow the tunnel... into the house... and see what someone with a bit of imagination has done.
Broccoli You are right, it is very cool. Well done to the designers. Unfortunately you've just illustrated a major problem with SL. The house is great. I enjoyed playing around with it for a few minutes. I will probably show it to some friends. I may go back in a few weeks to have a look round again. But then what? Gambling, whatever its flaws, and there are many problems I admit, does provide users with an experience that can be repeated many times over. With 90% of people leaving SL after signing up you really need content that is going to generate repeated use. As impressive as the house is, SL is never going to be able to compete with the major Gaming companies in terms of graphic design. In fact it is already falling behind some of its competitors in this particular area. And of course, for every jewel there is 10,000 rotting sims full of ugly builds and advertising billboards no one will ever read.

Perhaps sculpties and WindLight will do the trick. From: someone As impressive as the house is, SL is never going to be able to compete with the major Gaming companies in terms of graphic design. From: Archer Braun Thank you for being at least as old as I am. I think we've already established that the mean age on this forum is .. um, pretty ancient. There was a shocking poll recently where the largest age grouping was 40-50 (of course, when you get THAT old, you're smart enough to cheat cleverly, so we broke up everyone younger than us into 5-years rankings instead of 10-year. Then we hid the reading glasses for anyone older than us so that they couldn't vote.)
