From: Nimue Jewell Hi 3ring. I saw this question, and realized I wasn't sure. I know that editing an object and looking at the creator of the prim is unaffected by the creator of a texture. (Otherwise, texture sellers would be barraged with IM's for customer support for random things made with their textures ALL the time.) I wasn't sure about the more>more> inspect feature though. I'd never thought about it. I tried it out in world just now, and I don't see any evidence of the texture makers name even in the detailed "inspect" window. Based on my test, it seems all clear. If, however, the texture was in the inventory of the prim then one could look at the creator of that texture. I'm also not *certian* if one got the UUID of the texture used, that it would be impossible to back track to the original creator of a texture, but I think that would be pretty difficult for a typical user. I'm also not sure the implications for clothes, as I don't make those. thank you for your reply. i do make clothes, but they are not the bulk of my texture inventory. if a huge inventory is causing me to lag, and i know that i have some no copy items and personal textures i can move over to an alt to cut lag, i should totally do that. i don't suppose it really matter who the UUID links back to since the alt is still also me. and since it does not show up on the more>more>inspect wheel, i see no reason not to purge forward. thank you for taking the time to research this.

Okay, another retort forthcoming:
The advice to have a "New Item" or "Latest Design" is a good suggestion. When I makea new breed of dog, I put it at the head of the Dog Show Area on a "Latest Breeds" Table. Also, brand new things I leave in an orderly fashion at the landing point. Also, near the landing point, I will put special items. A couple weeks ago, I had a "Zoo Babies" week-end and put all the baby animals there for people to see easily. That went over pretty nicely.
Sometimes I think it helps to mix it up a little bit, but then I don't know how good my advice is, I don't make something you can sell effectively from a sign.
Also, give away promotional items. I will often pick someone who has me listed as one of their "Picks" and give them something new to try out, show off, display around. I find that's effective advertising. A few times I have given pets to newbies and asked them to show them off around where newbies congregate...that's paid off nicely too.

From: Eclectic Wingtips 3 ring.... i visited your mall just now... it is actually only a few sims away from my home sim The rez there does take a while. Longer than some but not awful. your fence took FOREVER to rez though. Dunno why. Once things had rezzed the lag was minimal The overall feel of the mall is great and i LOVE the signs you use for rent this space... better than the normal boxes. I would suggest blocking out those huge red for sales signs if you can. Also the path from the space with the koi pond through to th bit where u have mixed contributors and resale items?? if that was bigger it would be more obvious there are more shops there. I wouldnt have looked normally. thank you Eclectic. i am not sure why my textures are loading slowly. i should go and make sure they are 512 or smaller. some are jpg vs. png or tga, and perhaps that is a problem? the back side of the mall where the sale signs and resale area are... well, that's all new and fairly undeveloped. i just slapped some stuff there until i can decide what i want to do. it is not supposed to be more shops really, and i am the only one that has things for sale there. i also have the furniture dock over there, and it was the easiest way to link the two until i decide how to handle that area. i need to open it all up and link it all together i think, but that requires some assiatance from renters, and i hate to bug them until i am ready to make a real change. it's been really nice to be able to unload some transferrable itmes though, so i might keep it just like that for a little longer. i have so many items in my inventory that i will never use, and that's been a pretty good location to dump them. i typically sell the object for L$1-L$10 so they go pretty fast. thanks for your input. i haven't thought about messing with that backside and now i see it is something i should take more seriously.

Good to see you jump in, Penny. I am enjoying the company of your Rotts. Her displays are awesome....definitely worth the trip for a lesson in presentation.
I'm still working on more Reviews....but have a tip for your profiles, from a shopper's perspective. To me, it's easier to pull up a profile, for your store link, and I also want to see your presentation....so I've pulled up all your profiles. And noticed something.
As a Shopper....I want to see your store name first, in your front profile page comments, rather than scan down, and read everything. Then I go to Classified....assuming you advertised it.....if not....second stop is Picks. I would think that YOUR store should be first in picks....so that a shopper doesn't have to weed through your loving tributes to friends....and get side-tracked with your other favorite store picks. The reason I go to classified first....is to avoid the pick clutter, and having to read through all those.
I'm on a mission to see your store, from this thread....but if I were just shopping at random....If I go down the list of Picks....and someone else's store is before yours.....I might visit their's first.....and never get back to yours. So sad.

I don't know how effective I am being Mickey, my store is spread out over a whole sim with walkways for people to wander, or a teleport to let them cut to the chase and get right where they want. My store on Ramos Isle might be a better study case. I know what works for me selling animals, but I would no way presume that it would work for everyone, especially with the folks trying to make a name for themselves in the clothing biz.

Amaranthim, my picks has my Manifesto first including the things I get asked a blue million times so that maybe I will spare myself answering the same question 10 times a day. It sounds bitchy, and I don't intend it to be, but if I had a Linden every time I have said "No I won't sell you my animals full permission," and "no my animals won't attack" I could buy Linden Labs.

This would be true for any store. Get that attention the minute they land, and hold them.

WOW! you have put a lot of thought and time into this posting and the link. i don't have anything to add really except that i would be happy to host a kiosk of information of fellow entrepreneurs, as long as their products are original content. it's a great idea. i worry a little about putting my textures in to a notecard or prim. what if they get deleted or lost? i do not keep HD copies on my computer. once it's uploaded, i delete it. this means that if i want to make a change or recreate, i would have to start from scratch in photoshop.... no way i'm doing that. one item takes hours and hours. i think i'd rather feed my original texture to 2-3 alts and take my chances that way instead. i sure wish we could upload photoshop files.... LOL From: Skell Dagger I hope everyone doesn't mind, but I've spent a bit of time combing this thread and putting everything together - all the useful tips and links, and the info from merchants asking for help - into a document that everyone can reference, here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfz3dk33_0d2dvsbgx&hl=en If I've missed anyone out, please let me know. I know that I did miss at least one name out (Jojogirl Bailey) but that's because I'm not inworld right now and can't search for your store, Jojogirl. If you can give the SLurl out, then I'll add it to the list. Also, if any of you have additional info (SLX/onrez webstore links, inworld locations, blog URLs etc) that aren't on the page, please let me know here and I'll amend your section on the page. I thought this might be a good chance for all of us to see what others are doing to promote their work, so if you can see someone has a blog and you don't have one, you might want to create one, etc. Secondly, I can't remember who suggested it, but there was mention of promoting each others' work, followed by mention of being confused by that kind of thing happening in another store, so here is my suggestion for that: Has anyone visited Lemon Island recently? It's where Bewitched Hair and many other stores are. Each store on the island sends out a regular notecard newsletter to its groups, wherein *all* the designers on the island write about their latest creations and include SLurls and images. Many of us haven't created a group for our customers, but I wonder about creating our own kiosk (doesn't need to be anything fancy; just a one-prim kiosk design with a notecard-giver script in it) that each of us can place at our stores. Inside it we could place a similar newsletter kind of notecard to the one used by the Lemon Island group, wherein all of us in this group write about and include images of our latest creations. The frequency would need to be decided upon (I'd go with every other week, or even monthly). Thoughts and further suggestions on that? Also, the notecarding idea I had earlier (glad you all like it! *g*) can be used to archive full-perm versions of your designs, either for saving in your own inventory or sending off to a mule alt as backup (or both). Finally, as an inworld group, I wonder if it might be an idea to create a wiki for our reviews. Each of our stores can have its own page on the wiki, and whenever one of us visits another's store we can edit the wiki page to include our reviews. There are several online wikis out there that allow editing only by specified people (usually by login name) so it's another thought. Wikis are a fluid thing, many of them have pages like the front page on Wikipedia, where updates can be given and latest edits highlighted, so we could all check out who's been where and said what. Right, It's 3pm and I've not even eaten today. I need coffee and food. Back later!

From: PennyWhistle Cameron Early on Michael said not to rely on Onrez. I have to agree. Although I have dogs and cats and assorted animated wildlife listed on both, I don't make enough sales through Onrez to matter. I will have spurts with Slex...several sales there a day, then nothing for days. I had a Christmas store last December. My SLX sales were approximately five times as high as my OnRez sales. Big surprise: I briefly opened my card shop for Valentines and had slightly more sales with OnRez than SLX. My card shop has now been open since late May, and my OnRez sales are once again about 20% of my SLX sales. For both SLX and OnRez, remember that many people will use those for searching and then come to your shop if you've put your SLurl in the SLX/OnRez page. Think of both as free advertising, even if your direct sales don't show much activity.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but just thought I'd say that OnRez has never been much of an earner for me... SLX is far far better in terms of sales. In fact, I don't really bother listing new items on OnRez any more. Looks like other sellers are having the same experience..reassures me that it's not just me who has poor sales through them! Top tip for SLX listings - put keywords in all the major languages (German, Spanish, Portuguese, French for starters) in your listing. I've found that once I started doing that, my viewings / sales jumped significantly, so it's worth spending some time with an online dictionary. Also, put your SLX page in your web tab, and tell people you sell things in your profile front page. Sounds obvious but if you don't blow your own trumpet, who will? Have fun, Mac

I had added Spanish to my ads in OnRez- will take your tip and do SLExchange- need a German and French speaking person for further assistance on the others please! I volunteer anyone who needs Spanish

A few comments on the recent posts...
Traffic - I find that the traffic in an area makes no difference in my sales. I get people into my store on my own with the marketing i do. And for my type of home decor, i find that one person can buy ALOT, so that may be a "low traffic" but high sales day for me. Traffic in my stand alone store on my own land runs around 100-150 per day and i make real money from my sales...so tbh, i dont even worry about "traffic" as defined by SL.
As for a kiosk that delivers notecards...i try to use as few scripts as possible. The easiest way to do this would be to just drop all the notecards into a prim and then set the prim for sale for zero and "give contents." No scripts involved, no lag and very simple, wiht no limit on the number of notecards that can be passed out.
I am not as much in favor of a group for all of us because i think people have soo many groups they want to be in but are limited to 25. Just seems like a redundancy to me.
And just to be a devil's advocate...please be cautious of spending valuable promotion time on things like better logos and the color of the windows in your shop. Those things do not matter when it comes to someone making a purchase. My shop has almost no walls and i dont have a logo displayed anymore..just isnt necessary to bring people in and have them make purchases. To me those are nice to have's, not must have's. The focus to increase sales needs to be directly on marketing...actually doing it, and on making things easy for people to see and buy. Anything else is fluff...imho.

Well I learnt a valuable lesson these last 2 days, when finished creating a product .. TAKE THE SNAPSHOT straight away!! Oh my goodness, I had all the new items boxed up, completed with no image, I finally got done last night getting the new shiny store ready for placement!! so new rule for me .. create item, texture item .. TAKE PICTURE!!! NOw that I am done with that for a while at least, I now have time to go and visit all the wonderful stores. If anyone is still giving critique on the stores I would love some feedback!! http://slurl.com/secondlife/Spirit%20Witch/119/109/32

Hiya everyone, just waded thru the pages you wrote whilst i was sleeping!! lol. Anyways, im in favour of a kiosk with notecards with all the shops, great cross promoting. I for one have a mixed bag in my store. I make Beds with Play Sexy Animations inside ( not the cheapie freebie ones) as well as some furniture with the PS animations as well. Then i have general furniture, I also have my partners shoes and music for sale as well too. ( he is a fantastic trance musician) I am also creating clothes at the moment, i have a few tshirts out in the store and they dont sell too bad. Any ideas on how to present them would be great. I have them in a single vendor at the moment. SLex vs onrez. I have both, but i have only sold on Slex. I also dabble in sl Photography and have done a few things, so of course im addicted to flickr as well and have a few of my pics up on the wall for sale. The Island im on is a friends and they have done a great job designing it. There are bumper boats, jetskis, motor bikes you name it its there. Its a great sim. There is a quaint little village too with waterways with shops to rent. Anyhow im enjoying this thread and can see it going far. Would love to meet you all inworld sometime! But its morning time for me now 7am and its off to work i go, well not really going anywhere i work from home, lol. So hopefully i will catch up as soon as i can. Skell - Brilliant work, here is my extras http://uncensored.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&MerchantID=97479http://shop.onrez.com/Surreal_Babiihttp://flickr.com/photos/21987853@N05/hehe just realised i had some sales on on rez, lol first ones woohoo! lol.
