What's new at the hair fair?

I noticed at midnight that there were still umpty-hundred folks at the hair fair, so haven't been yet. And since I have to play a lot on a laptop nowadays, may not make it at all -- so I'm wondering, what's new this year?

I'd love to see some pics of brand new ways of making hair! I think one of the more interesting recent developments is Laqroki's (sp?) skin-with-hairline-that-pairs-up-with-hair -- I tried one on at their store, pretty cool.

Anyone see new small creators of really interesting looks?

New cool vintage hair stylists?

I made it around all four sims on Sunday. There is some good stuff there. I'll dig though my Hair Fair demo folder for some of the new names I came across.

This was my favorite, from SLick, available at Hair fair:

It uses a HUD system so that you dye the hair the color you want, and after that is done it is copy/mod. You buy a pack of 1,3,6, or all. The advantage is, if you are like me and sometimes wear black and other times wear red you don't have to buy two different packs to get both colors.

I've yet to be able to get in....every time I looked at the map it was a mob scene and I didn't even bother. It's too difficult to move around and try on demos with that kind of lag so I'm hoping in a few days it will settle down. Last thing I really need is MORE hair tho :p

Since it goes until July 4th, I probably won't even try to get in until sometime next week.

I finally made it in yesterday.

When I got there, the lag was *so* bad that I just had to leave after a short while.

I don't think I'll be going back until much later, hoping it will be less crowded.

I didn't stay long enough to notice any new stuff.

I think it helps if you go in stoned. You can handle the slow pace better that way. The down side is you forget where you wanted to go long before you get there.

It is about the same as any other maxed out sim. Next week will be a much smoother experience, I promise.

I think you wore this to the Cartel party? I was really admiring it.... :)

What are the chances of someone creative, here, making a male and a female skin with painted on hair and clothes, for going to over primmed over populated dos like these?

I have a bunch of skins for just that occasion...including one made by Immy that is an attachment point AV. One is even just the unrezzed gray cloud. *grins* I'll send the transfer ones your way in world.

You don't really need to just wear a skin. Both of these outfits have an ARC of 1:

Wow! Gorgeous pic!

Dernier Cri has a similar HUD system which I love.

I usually just got around the hair fair for the freebies. The lag is too much for me to be able to see much of the hair on offer nvm buy any, but if I like the freebies I do go check out the store and buy somethign if I see anythign I like.
I always buy a bandana too for bandana day.

LMAO I think you just gave me an idea for the rest of my evening. I tried to go a little while ago....made it out with one style from LaLa Moon that I paid too much for.....but since I was ready to pitch a fit at all the people walking around with their bling and AO's and umpteen million attachments (whilst there is a sign posted asking folks to please keep it simple and offering items to wear to make it easier for everyone.....but but ooohhh nooooo there's just way too much vanity going on for anyone to do THAT)

So.... :p I left, before I said something I'd regret....or, well.....at least feel bad about, sort of.

Thanks. :)

Ok, I went through my demo folder and found some shop names of places I made a note of.

Ingenue has great retro hair, no surprise, and a good freebie.

Tiny Bird. I hadn't heard of them before Hair Fair, but their hair in soda can rollers is so cute I'll be popping into their mainstore.

Raspberry Aristocrat is another I hadn't heard of, and after going to their mainstore I'm wondering if Hair Fair is sort of a debut for them? Either way, their hair textures are great and I can't wait to see what styles they add in the future.

Tiny Bird and Raspberry Aristocrat have their hair fair demos in their mainstores, so you can avoid the lag and go there to grab demos if you want.

Don't forget Xstreet SL as a place to get demos of some of the exclusive Hair Fair styles. A lot of the creators have put demos of their Hair Fair specials up there. Just search the marketplace for "+Hair +Fair" (minus the quotes) and you'll find quite a few.

Getting into, then around the HairFair this year is/was abysmal. I and other friends have tried numerous times and can't get in, or if we do manage to get in the lag is so bad you just don't want to stay there as pictures of the hairstyles just don't rezz.

I don't think the organisers have really done their part in keeping lag to a minimum. it's fine to ask prospective buyers to reduce their prims when they enter the sims, by giving out 'lag reducing' pajamas and a hershey kiss for hair, however there are unnecessary prims laying everywhere, presumably in an attempt to add interest to the already garish decoration.

Also, whoever decided on this year's 'decorative theme' must have been either stoned out of their sculls at the time, or recovering from a total bender. Too many textures per frame and overly fussy patterns are major contributors to lag. The customers are there to see the hair, not the magic cupcakes and lollypops!

After being attacked by ARC types at the Hair Fair I discovered this blog and wished I had notecarded it prior to going there ;)

http://analutetia.com/blog/anatomy-of-lag/

One more thing, if avatars were allowed to land in any part of the sim, then the server "call" for textures might not be as lag causing? Furthermore, if everyone was requested to reduce their draw to minimum that might help too? ;)

I spent several hours there yesterday; and while it was a chore getting around, it wasn't horrible. It would be better if the people attending would be considerate enough to dress for the event (wear system clothing and remove all unnecessary attachments and blingy crap), as I saw people there whose Avatar Rendering Cost (ARC) were in excess of 8000! But the best way to get around is to dial down your draw distance to as low as it will go, and auto-mute anyone who comes into your view with an ARC higher than 700.

Using these tricks, I got around fairly well (when the sim's FPS and physics FPS weren't dropping below 1, with the time dilation dropping to 0.02), and this was on a midrange laptop.

Who'da thunk a thread like this would get Godwined? And so early into it, no less!

Anyway, I read that blog, and while it is mostly correct, its argument about ARC being a myth is fundamentally flawed. Sims have prim limits for a reason. Place too many prims on a sim, and the server starts to load down. In most cases, a handful of high-ARC people scattered through a moderately built-up sim won't have much of a notable effect on sim performance. But cram 50 people, each wearing a sim's worth of prims on their person, into a sim already prim-packed to begin with, and you'll have what we like to call a "show-stopper". It it simple physics (not the simulated kind, either) - something the writer of that blog neglects to address.

But if you still believe ARC is a myth, then go ahead and wear that 150-prim hairdo, the 500-prim necklace, and bling yourself to the hilt. Just don't be surprised when us "ARC Nazis" mute you - and it has *nothing* to do with us having underpowered equipment. If the sim's FPS is dropping into the low single digits, it is NOT *my* laptop that is causing it. It is the sim being overloaded by people wearing ten times its rated prim limit.

I totally agree...very nice textures but far too many in a sim where people can't even walk..
