From: Annabelle Vandeverre I think that was a reference to LL banning the IP address I know from my time as IRC op that IP bannings comes along with many problem, including that you may be banning people who have nothing to do with the reason of your banning. Know that not every person connects all the time with the same IP number... so you want to ban to complete subnet in such a case? Or what about hiding your real IP number? I have been told it is easy to do. Morwen.

From: Annabelle Vandeverre I think that was a reference to LL banning the IP address, I know from my days as IRC OP that IP bannings bring along many problems, that may even lead that innocent people will be banned. Know that not all people connect with the same IP number all the time. So what you want to do in such a case? Ban the complete sub-net? And to that, I have been told it is very easy to hide your real IP number... which makes IP banning useless. Morwen.

From: Alora Perse The make my day law..if you feel someone is a direct thret to you or your home you have the right to shoot them, you have the right to kill them to stop them and to defend your self and your things. This is a RL law in some states. I am a firm beliver in this law. RL and SL. If you shoot me ,my friends or even just my land,I should have the right to defend my self, my things, and the land I own. And lets face it,orbiting, burning and cageing greifers is good cheap entertainment. Defending should not be done by people itself... it will lead to drama over drama, as RL shown us so many times. But go ahead in SL, you make the griefers day... you react. That is all what they want. And as said before... by orbitting, caging griefers you lower yourself to their level... the level of a griefer. Morwen.

Morwen. Dynamic IPs are far more common with dial-up than broadband. As for hiding an IP, you send a lot of information back and forth, constantly, with Second Life, so I don't know if a proxy (most common way to mask an IP) would work well. However, a griefer could definitely call his ISP complaining of some sort of "connection problem" and ask that his IP be changed, which would be one way around an IP ban. As it happens, I was subject to my first serious griefer attack today. I was launched into the freaking clouds by two guys setting off some sort of bomb in an amusement park. It swamped my RAM so badly that I had to restart my PC. (Yes, I AR'd. We'll see what happens.)

I didn't read this thread but I just wanted to say that I've never had a problem that turning off pushing, setting auto return and banning a few specific people didn't fix.
Orbitting is pointless and silly. When I get orbitted it has absolutely no affect at all on what I'm doing since my camera just stays where it was focussed last and I can simply teleport back in under a second. Especially if it's on my own land, completely irrelevant.
For that reason I really don't see the point in ARing people who orbit you unless you have some personal grudge against them. Everyone knows nobody reads those reports anyway.

From: Gaybot Foxley Oh, don't forget to give the alt one of those weapons that will mess up all of the objects someone is wearing. That isn't permanent is it? I can imagine i would need to make backups of my furry av... >.> If it was no-copy that would be worse... Hopefully it's just until you relog... --- I can understand how people wish to fight back. Griefers are a pain and we don't see much of a positive sign that LL cares. Sometimes we feel we have to act alone or nothing gets done. However it is still against the TOS to shoot back, and it only brings you down to their level. I try to use retaliation weapons as a last resort. If ejecting from parcel/estate and using llTeleportAgentHome doesn't do the trick then i use my blitz on them to send them to Jupiter with all the other flattened airheads.

Some of them are permanent until you reset the script if you can or unpack a new item. They only involve the scripts in an item. Since LL doesn't block or ban those kinds of weapons and anyone can use them, may as well use them on griefers with an alt. lol How are they going to continue the assault if their weapons are broken?

It's just a thought. I will probably never actually do it because I don't ever get griefed.
P.S. I make backups of things that I value with scripts in them because these weapons exist.

I believe it's in the Help tab. A feature called bumps, pushes, etc. It should tell you the last person to bump/push you with a script, a scripted object, or their avatar.

I had a griefer visit while I was on my land entertaining a lady friend. He was hovering around throwing batman boxes all over the place and shooting other things off... I asked him nicely to please leave and have his fun somewhere else. Like I knew he'd listen, ... he kept on. He ended up engulfed in flames, flying around like a burning turd wondering wtf happened to him, then got 'owned' and crushed some distance underground. Fook with me on my overpriced and tiered land? muahaha Ya I know, 'your only giving him what he wants', 'your no better than him', 'You'll end up getting banned'. .... yada yada You know what? felt hella good and my friend was thoroughly entertained. AR me? I get banned? at least I'll start saving some money. =P

Hmm so orbiting / pushing an obnoxious idiot brings you down to their level? I suspect eject & banning does too then. I would have thought to get to their level you would have to release some Batrap boxes, Grey goo, banana phones, and a dozen darleks first. And yes they are cheap entertainment I could enjoy standing on my land, continually freeze/cage/orbiting the twat, till he gets sick of it then banning him. If your going to run & tp out of your land everytime his alts & mates alts walk in, why not just deed the land to them?

Simple answer, Retaliation Is an ARable offence, Just as the Attacks are. Don't Retaliate, Use the AR system, and if there are witnesses, get them to AR as well.

my hubbeh and i were vsisting our daughter and son in law one afternoon and we were orbited for no valid reason. after my daughter investigated to find out why, we all lodged ARs, then contacted the sim owner. he is now banned from 42 sims.
if a monkey throws poop on you, do you drop your pants and take a dump and throw it back? treat it as it is: an jerk with poor social skills lookin for a reaction and getting it.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

If a monkey throws poo at you in your house do you leave it in the house, go to the post office and write a letter to the monkey control department and wait for it to be dealt with? Personally I would just shoot the monkey AR system is as useful as help system...............

Personally I would just shoot the monkey the OP was referring to a public area i believe(i will reread to make sure). on the land You own or rent anythign goes. however, as many have stated here, its usually the retaliator(or vigilante), not the griefer who gets in more trouble for, ironically, not filing an abuse report. and if a monkey did poop in my home i wouldnt shoot it, hubbeh would, then make a coat out of it ^_^

Look, you cannot NOT react. If you are busy engaged in something and someone comes in and starts hassling you, rezzing huge objects and throwing them around, you can't continue what you were doing. If you give up your building work, file an AR and leave, you are reacting. If you counterattack you are reacting. Ignoring and continuing as you were is not an option.

Morwen. Well good luck rehabilitating griefers And no I wouldn't really shoot the monkey, but physical force to remove him from the house, yes.

Actually the eject and ban system is part of the client and added by linden Lab for us to use if we own land and wish to remove people from it. They are the ONLY thing we are legally allowed to use on the mainland. I am positive there is a line in the TOS about it, but if you don't want to take the time to read it, you really should ask a linden. c.c

From: Eric Recreant I think Lindens should IP ban. They do if your I.P. causes too many Abuse Reports to be filed against you; unfortunately that means anybody who registered thier account at your house can go home and get you banned if they are a kid who thinks this is a combat game or whatever. It has been done. One reason they dont LIKE to do it, is because if you get IP banned, your neighbors (I used ta work Tech Support for an ISP) might not be able to reach SL. When I worked in similar circumstances where we might consider an I.P. ban, it was a REAL tough decision to make, unless they lived WAY out "in the sticks", away from other High Speed Internet users, so we wouldnt have another "oops". This is one reason that makes me question why the Second Life Liberation Front chooses Linden Installations & Business locations as targets. They would be prime candidates for I.P. bans if anybody would. If they really love to use SL THAT MUCH, why use useless "virtual direct action" against the company who owns and keeps the worl d running, but whoa I'm way off topic alla sudden
