You live and learn every day in SL and i was just curious what your biggest mistake has been..or at least one that stands out even if its not big?

Mine would have to be roughly when i first started, i decided to put $$ in SL so i could go spending some $L and look presentable, I walked into a store that was selling skins and I dropped 250L on a skin set (now some might not think 250 is a lot, but at the time i only had 270) anyway, i wore the skin with pride as it was my first purchase.
A week or so goes by and i went shopping with an SL friend and we happened upon a large skin store, that had a section upstairs where other shop owners and such had set up a freebie section... there staring me in the face was a box containing my skins..which i had bought... and they were free...FREE.... Boy did i feel stupid,

what made me feel more stupid, was when i was buying the skins, the owner of the store was there and she told me a friend of hers had made the skins and allowed her to resell them.... not realising she was scamming me....

So far that has been one of my SL mistakes... Learn to look around before making an impulse buy!!!

With ya on this one. There has been 3 times I have bought something only to find it for free latter. Now if I need something, I tour the freebies shops, I no longer buy anything.

On a similar front from a different angle I bought some items at a resale store, then read the forums and saw people complaining their items were being ripped off and sure enough one of the items I'd purchased was a rip off. The designer was really nice about it but told me those items would be available as freebies but she said she didn't hold me accountable for the rip off.

My big mistake was purchasing HUDs and other scripted items to help me find transparent prims. Frustrated by hitting my prim limit with invisible objects, I spent a good chunk of change before I figured out I could just highlight transparent from the view menu.

My biggest mistake was to buy the wrong plot of land - I was buying two X 32 sq m for 450 L$ each but I clicked the one next to the pair and ended up having to pay 3500L$ for it as I didn't check the details until the blue 'you have paid so-and-so L$3500..... window appeared.

Also the other day I bought a danceball and teleporter for my new club and neither of them work. So rather than bother the creators over the few hundred L$, I made my own dance animator and a landmark giver and they both work fine.

Regarding freebies, I know that selling freebies is against the TOS, but what about a creator who gives away a product as a promo for a few days and then decides to offer it on general sale at a price?

I was trying on outfits and hair. I was naked and bald and I meant to delete a landmark in the folder I was about to try on, I think it was ETD. I hit TP insted of delete. I landed and to my horror was lagged to where I couldn't tp back out or a minute.

Others in the store might call that a bonus not a mistake ;)

My mistake, buying land and not having a solid plan of action for it, hence wasting my money on tier. Oh well, there is something to be said for having the feeling of owning land in SL regardless if what you have on it is always under construction or changing.

When I was VERY new, I modified a texture on a pair of EXPENSIVE pants (that went to a whole outfit) just to see how that texture would look on clothes, not realizing that once you make that mistake, you can never get the original texture. DUH!

i had to go rebuy the pants. grrrrr

My biggest mistakes always seem to be social - inadvertantly offending someone. Like for a long time I was running around with Log Chat checked in my preferences. I don't know if this is the default, but I thought it was a good idea and it was made available to use. Nice to keep a record of what was said for learning purposes.

Then while hanging around a TP area waiting for the world to rezz, someone asked me not to be logging chat please as it is considered rude. Never mind that somehow prying into others' settings might be rude. I haven't done it since - however I would caution that person that anyone could highlight the chat history and control C copy it into Notepad and achieve the same results if they really wanted to.

But that's the main thing - not knowing what others are capable of doing with their scripts and settings. If you don't know how to do something it's too easy to assume others can't. -- KC

Trying to win an argument with a certain hot-headed land baron. She won. On a public forum.

Early days in SL: Getting involved with people too quickly before finding out what they were really like. And then having to extricate myself was like surgery without anesthetic..painful.

I love the people I know now so it all worked out.

Kind of the opposite to Dnali really. ;) I'm far too shy and find it difficult to maintain conversation beyond introductory platitudes. I'll see somebody a second or third time and while they try to get a conversation going, my brain is flooded with zeroes and I get distracted by my inability to compute. They're like "huh!" and think I'm being conceited.

So I don't socialize as much as others, and that is a big mistake because avoidance triggers the rinse/repeat process.

My biggest mistake was probably buying an olympic sized swimming pool for a 512 plot. It looked smaller in the store!

There's a builder's saying, 'measure twice, cut once'. I've started applying that to shopping :)
