The only sensible way to react from ESC would be to pull the plug, apologize and restart the experiment, now with a thought-out concept. And please, stop the "opt-in dies at birth" - ESC itself runs one of the two big SL sales sites and that's a pure opt-in solution and it is all but dead at birth ...

That is what I suggested - that they scrap this version, and start all over with an opt-in. It fell on deaf ears.

Since they already are spying on everyone, they should offer to track avatar's movements.

Sell them to In world Partners like a detective agency.

Electric Sheep is watching you.

Forseti,

Thank you for at least acknowledging the concerns raised in this thread. I think your service as it stands is hazzardous and reckless at best. But with some effort on your part may be salvagable. I will offer a few suggestions, for what it is worth, as constructive criticism.

1: Stop hiding the opt-out point in the third floor of a building way out on one edge of your sim. Put a copy of that opt-out kiosk directly at the landing point for default TP to your sim.

2: Put a SLURL link on your "about" web page, so people can TP directly to the kiosk. What is there now does NOT work. I had to parse the sim name from the search URL, and then had to manually enter the in-sim coordinates from the URL into my map dialog, to TP to where the opt-out was.

3: Filter results so items at or below L$10 are never listed, unless the avatar who owns them has deliberately opted in to your sevice. That eliminates the default L$10 price that is set beween the instant you click "For Sale" and the time you hit return after typing in the desired price. It also filters out the person to person private transfers set to L$1 or L$0.

4: Allow those who opt in to specify sims or parcels that should NEVER be listed. Even is that is just by banning the bot on specific parcels. That way, merchants can exclude the locations of their home or their workshop, if those are not at the same parcel as their store.

5: In the final release of this, when it is out of beta, make it an opt-in service. Trash the initial data and start fresh with ONLY those individuals who opt in.

6: Make a lower level of opt-in. One that says it is all right to list what you have for sale. As a merchant, no matter how much you improve this service, I will NEVER opt in if doing so makes every prim I own, including those in my bedroom, a matter of public record. But I might opt in at a level that allows me to list ONLY prims that are both 'for sale' and are not on my home and workshop parcels.

7: Have a different level of opt-in says it's all right for the bot to list every prim you own in-world, as the current opt-in does. I can't personally concieve of why anyone would sign up for such a complete invasion of privacy, but I suppose some might, at least on a temporary basis, to locate a lost item. If someone DOES opt in for allowing your bot to catalog every last prim they have in-world, for sale or not, that list should be available ONLY to that individual, by logging in to your site with a user account. General access or people other than the owner of the prims should NEVER have a list of every prim that anyone else owns.

Personally, if I want your company to list anything of mine that is for sale, I'll list it through my SL Boutique merchant account. I do sell my things there, though not my whole line of products. If you want to spend time building a better search engine, look seriously first at improving the one for SLB. It hasn't worked well for many months.

I have opted out of your bot-driven experiment, for myself and for even the least used of my alts, and I will ban that bot from my land as soon as I get back in world. I will be very interested to see at that point if I can find anything at all in your website belinging to my Partner, who at this point is unaware that your bot exists. Tell me, if I ban the bot from my land, will my Partner's prims on my land be listed, if she accidentally has something set as 'for sale'? Or will banning your bot also de-list all her entries on my parcel?

I LOVE Har's style!!! He or she has just become my newest SL hero!! Brilliant idea!! And I agree with Brenda, I want to know their other "services" so I can avoid them like the plague that they are.

Thank you Har.

As i see it, an apology isn't enough. A cease and desist of the ESC site till it is revamped with an opt in, minimum price, and many other issues and concerns mentioned in this thread are addressed would be more suitable.

Them saying -
"Im sorry someone used our service to rob you blind, better luck next time"

Really is a bit of a crummy apology.

No, because, they are so cool. It does not matter for them ifi it makes really sense. they do it, because it is possible and they are technicians with a lack of social thinking. And means they are more than silly.

They may take some breath and read Orwell an others if they even know, how to read and understand a book that is not about technical things.

Shut it down!!! We did not askt for it!

A possible workaround
04-18-2007 15:22
Perhaps not always convenient but how about setting transfer objects for sale for a high price. If someone does jump in to buy, you win.
There's still the awareness issue though.

2. After you have rescued your own items from unwanted sale, note this sentence brought down here from the quote above: "Works for Lindens too, lots of objects in linden village still marked for sale." Go buy up every Linden object listed for sale at an unreasonably low price! Start with the L$0s. It's perfectly legal under the TOS, after all.

Since the link keeps getting buried, I'll put it here: http://search.sheeplabs.com/core

I love this idea. I think it will be a great attention getter if hundreds of folks start materializing in various Linden homes and offices and buying up all their stuff.

I did find a couple useful features on this site - you can see quite easily the scam artists selling Linden created freebie items for exhorbitant amounts of money. And item creators can also use this to see if others are reselling their items.

Overall though, I don't appreciate being opted in without knowing about it. If these are the same people running SLB, they could have at least had the courtesy to let their merchants and customers know first.

6. Boycott anything and everything that has anything to do with Electric Sheep and nothing to do with our fun buying spree.
A far more effective solution is to generate bad press about ESC concerning their latest and horribly thought through little "experiment" (based on facts, and not libel obviously). They couldn't care less what insignificant residents think while they're raking in corporate cash.

ESC isn't a company by residents for residents. Any in-world boycott isn't even going to register.

im not sure which is funnier

1. going to buy lindens items to prove a point

2. seeing how many linden items (which are normally free) are for sale by people in shops

should be an interesting week

A Modest Proposal Continued...
04-18-2007 16:52
I am encouraged by the warm response to my suggestion. I think there are a lot of things SL residents can do about their problems for themselves, without Big Brother Linden's assistance, and hopefully this will be one of them. Let me add a couple of suggestions while you are out shopping:

Please be sure to let the Lindens know how much you appreciate any bargains they offer and how you came to know about them. The sooner they know how this works, the better.

And when buying from large corporations' locations, do look for a way to let them know how you found their bargains as well. Big companies can be even more dense about what's going on around them, but when they find out they can be surprisingly quick and effective in expressing their "appreciation" for "services" like Electric Sheep's.

Finally, if anyone should be so fortunate as to pick up a bargain in an Electric Sheeper's bedroom while they are sharing a tender moment with someone, do be sure to engage them in a cheery conversation about the wonderful opportunity they have made available, and to urge their partner to join in our "treasure hunt."

Happy shopping!

This reminds me of the conversation between Arthur Dent and Prosser as the bulldozers were revving up:

Prosser: "But Mr. Dent, the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months."

Arthur Dent: "Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn't exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them had you? I mean like actually telling anybody or anything."

Prosser: "But the plans were on display . . . "

Arthur Dent: "On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."

Prosser: "That's the display department."

Arthur Dent: "With a flashlight."

Prosser: "Ah, well the lights had probably gone."

Arthur Dent: "So had the stairs."

Prosser: "But look, you found the notice didn't you?"

Arthur Dent: "Yes, yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard."

Actually, that Electric sheep search is pretty interesting. I found an item that shows me as creator, that I never made. Had a little chat with the true builder (who had modded something I made).

Otherwise, it's been a bit of a non-starter. I've bookmarked it, and plan to use it regularly to hunt for resale copies of BDSM furnishings I want (great way to "google" flea markets)... and in my first search, I did happen to come across a really sweet $85 pair of boots that I bought instantly (sadly, the item I was chasing down, had been sold or moved).

Definitely motivates me to make a few old-school box vendors in my shop. (darned thing can't read through a JEVN vendor.)

Reading through some of these comments, it seems to me that some people think that anyone can pop in and buy anything from your bedroom. From what I can see, this thing only finds items that are for sale..

Simple solution: don't set 'for sale' on anything you want to keep. duh =)

As a suggestion, maybe you could only display objects that are listed for sale in parcles set to business/shopping.
