Royce, consider posting to the forum at Second Citizen. They are a far sweeter and compassionate bunch than these nasty folks.

Think that might not be extortion but the following is: There is a resident, initials GJ, who is sending dance balls to people. If they accept all of their money is transferred to her account. I trust she is banned now but if not, be aware. i have to call BS on that one. there is no way that can happen. if you REZ'ed the ball and then answered YES to debit permission, then yes you can script to take all your money, in fact the script to do just that is open source and posted right here in the forums. but you can not loose anything by merely accepting a object, you have to give it permission with the dialog box to allow it to DEBIT your account. /15/b0/168759/1.html _____________________
InSL u find every kind of no-life retard you could possibly imagine as well as a few even Tim Burton couldnt imagine u find 12yr-olds claiming to be 40 men claiming 2 be women, women claiming 2 make sense and every1 claiming 2 have ideas that are actually worth a damn if only someone would just listen to their unique innovative and exceptionally important idea

Extortion attempt in SL... Thought I'd share this experience with everyone. I introduced my SL girlfriend to a resident I had only recently met, thinking nothing of it. When we left him to go off exploring, he sent her a gun as a "gift" (she loves guns), which made her feel awkward considering she had just met this guy. She thanked him for it, and asked him what she owed him for it (to be polite), to which he replied "Don't worry about it, unless you have 499l's" She didn't want to feel like she owed him money, so she sent him the 499l's. He then IM'd her again and said it was actually 200l more than that, so she gave it to him. It's worth noting that the gun was a low prim piece of crap which he obviously found for free, which makes him an even bigger scumbag. Needless to say, I got back to him and "convinced" him to give her all her money back, and my GF gave back the gun. I personally would not have offered the guy anything for it if it was a gift, but my GF is a much sweeter soul than I, and I know many of you might get scammed in a similar way if you're not careful. Anyone have similar stories? *edit. changed Linden to resident. sorry for the confusion. We were having a tournament on our island one quiet Sunday when a "representative" from ATS Security showed up, started orbitting everyone in sight, and kept yelling "You like being shot? If you'd hired ATS Security this wouldn't be happening". Not quite the same, but... Yeah, stupid ass people do try to do extortion in Second Life. I can't imagine why. Another time I met a newb who was interested in the avatar and some of the attachements I was wearing, so I was showing him the various things I'd made or purchased recently when he asked if I would give them all to him. When I said that I couldn't, and before I could explain what "no transfer" means, he said "I'll just have to rob your ass then, fool". I think he was the first person I ever used a weapon on in Second Life without consent. . _____________________

It's not BS. Permission to debit lindens is put in there were permission to animate your avatar. Some people are not seeing that and hitting yes to both. _____________________

Second Life solipsism...great. What do you even mean by that??? Go away. I was there when it happened. The guy owned up to it when I confronted him, and gave back the money. It happened the way I said it. that's it. Without "hearing" it first-hand from your "girlfriend" we have no idea whether money actually changed hands. We're missing a key fact. And we've already been exposed to your uncanny ability to factually describe events in your start to the thread: * It was a "Linden." (later turned out to be a non-Linden resident) * It was "extortion." (there was not threat made: "Give me the money or a bad thing will happen" ![]() * And if we don't accept YOUR version of the events we're told to "go away." |

Thanks for your response. You know what happened here though, that could happen to others, and why it is extortion to a certain degree? My GF believed this guy was a friend of mine (as did I), and so didn't want to offend him, which might offend me. It was a very sneaky, and underhanded thing to do, and I'm glad he was smart and gave her her money back. BTW...there are many ways to "hurt" people online if you know what you're doing. i've yet to get hurt financially or otherwise in SL maybe its just internet experience but i'm careful ![]() the only time i got "hurt" was due to the fact that I decided to take a risk knowing I might possibly get hurt. It was with a private island rental with an uknown land baron the prices were quite low and as a result it was worth the risk of possibly finding a new guy out there who was just starting out. I lost my money as he did strange things with the land like make it impossible for me to actually port to my land as he redirected traffic to a hub etc. Anyhow the bottom line is yeah you have to learn. IN SL its dont touch anything and dont accept anything unless you know reasonably well the person you are accepting it from. Another rule is never Buy anything directly from an avatar is another no no because there are kids that sign up and pose as store representatives who are authorised to give you some kind of "deal". If you ask all the right questions like asking them to show you the item etc they wont be able to. So buy it from the vendor on the wall not from him and ask him to refund the difference and they never will (but they will log out) . Usually you report these guys to the store owner. Most of the other stuff is the same common sense stuff you get in other situations ie: dont give out your account info and dont share your account. Anyhow you can use the word extort if you want but that's not what happened even though he did take advantage. extort is when you ask someone to do something "or else" you will do something "bad" to them eg: pay for protection on a threat. or someone threatens to slander you unless you give them a pile of money or something. The guy just took advantage she's just lucky it was not one of those objects that emptied out her account. Also the fact you got the money back means it trully wasn't much more then some guy taking advantage. The real thieves in sl are like any other thief and they have no remorse or caring and wil take your money or your land with no apology and not return it and mock you in im's too ![]() |

Royce you might want to slow down a bit - While I can understand you being upset -
Forums Bans are supposed to translate into In World Bans You have used the F word then made a a implied threat and then a even clearer one - all against Forums policy. I doubt this thread is worth losing even 1 days access to SL over. |

I explained how it was extortion in another reply, so fuck off and get back to mommy's tit pencil dick. |
