From: Green Panther The Antigua-US WTO trade dispute seems one-sided, but it may not be. One of the options open to Antigua is to suspend intellectual copyright for American products. That means they could mass-produce Hollywood blockbusters and US TV without paying a cent in royalties. The WTO can give them permission to do that if they ask for it.
That would probably force the US to cave in over online gambling, since the alternative would cost them billions. Guys.. This is getting out of hand. Do you really want to move into the feild of hate and anger towards each other over a game? SL is a game for the average person.. and it's based where laws affect how the game is played. It is NOT a vendetta against' anyone person or anyone country. Take a close look at what's happening here. I realize we are all upset about this but really... be realistic here. When you walk into someones house do you expect to be able to get what you want no matter what consequences you will put yourself or others in? Laws are there for a reason and each country places them because in their eyes they help the society and it's people as a whole. I am canadian.. before I even started playing SL on a regulare basis I did some looking and realized this was a US based website. That means I am walking into a US house so to speak. That means any rules and regulations on this website I need to adhere to.. just like if someoen comes to m house I expect a certain ammount of rules to be followed just like anyone else. If I dont' like it I have teh opton to leave.. or adapt, or be creative with them in a good way. Cant do that if you are all fired up and angry. I have a rule I live by for my own self.. never ever fight when angry.. that's when major mistakes can happen and when angry words can hurt unncessarily. So we can't gamble.. that isn't all SL is about.. there are other games inside SL that can be fun .. the L$ don't have to be the only incentive for the games either. and with a little creativity those that were bright enough and skilled enough to create these games that were used to game with .. turn on the thinking cap and see what else you can come up with that is LEGAL within SL and it's governing laws of it's country.

Well I've been on the lash but right now you're making a lot of sense. I might disagree when I wake up. When in Rome do as the Romans do and all that but I still maintain that it was shoddy treatment to not give notice to people that gambling was being banned. I think it was a sneaky way of making money for LL who charged people tier knowing damn well they were going to close people's business down and I don't for one minute believe it was an overnight decision and that really disappoints me.

My post was about the Antigua-US WTO trade dispute. It was not a hateful post, just some observations as to what the implications of that dispute are. I am not sure why you chose to respond to it particularly. I hope you enjoy SL. I have never found it very entertaining because of the glitches, the difficulty finding interesting content, and a number of other problems which haven't been addressed after several years. I am not really interested in developing forms of entertainment which please the US government, I think I will just quietly take my cash elsewhere as several people have suggested.

it makes a lot of sense to me though .. it takes time to run an investigation undercover .. min of 6 months , then one has to wiat for paperwork an dreports and blah blah.. I'd be surprised if this was a good 8 to 9 months before LL could even think about what they should or could do to comply with the law. At least teh investigated instead of just simply pulling the games. The gave it the benefit of the doubt.

Can't you play Poker online for money? What is the rationale for including poker in this ban policy?

From: Julie Apocalypse Well-said and exactly what I have been thinking. Bearing arms is illegal in the UK, how would LL feel if I started a campaign to ban guns from Second Life? I find them highly offensive, not to mention barbaric and primitive ... why should I have to put-up with them?
See the point I am making here? How can sitting at a slingo game, chatting to friends, sharing fun, and spending just a few lindens (or none at all) possibly be harmful? How can it be even remotely as harmful as shooting someone in cold blood? No, they're not real guns on SL, but they are in America. And some people there still prefer them to having fun with friends, it seems.
Gamblers hurt no one but themselves. "Bang Bang! You're dead! Ha-Ha!" moronic idiots can hurt a great number of people. The whole thing is PATHETIC. It's got nothing to do with offensiveness, it's about the laws LL has to abide by. Having make-believe weapons and role-playing make-believe violence isn't illegal.

And using PayPay or a CC to buy lindens to use for gambling is also against the law and their terms of service.

So they will ban gambling before letting it gwet to that point
