I once had clam soup/chowder in a clear broth in some hole-in-the-wall diner in Niagara Falls and it was the best darn soup ever. NO ONE sells it around here - just the clam chowder with the white cream sauce.
I'd love to find it again some day. It's usually sort of a tomato base instead of a cream base. Not creamy like tomato soup, but more like the base in minestrone.

I'd love to find it again some day. Yep that's it. There are varying amounts of tomato in the recipe, but trouts minestrone analogy is a good one. I can't stand any cream based soups, Manhattan is my choice.
