Today I bought a headset for use with Skype (for communicating with what's left of my very small family a thousand miles from me in one direction or another). I'm against the idea of voice in world as I thought it would break the 4th wall of immersion too much, but I wanted to see what it was really like.

On Ghosty's suggestion I went to Help Island Public and just sat and listened.

It was creepier even than I could imagine. I could not tell who was talking. One girl's voice absolutely made my skin crawl. There was something not right about it. I don't think it was a voice changer, but there was something sinister about it, unnervingly soft and obsequious, with absolutely perfect diction and no discernible accent of any kind. (Shudder!) It was just wrong in ways I have no writing skills to describe.

I think I'll stick with SL as I know it.

More pats for the puppy :( - so sorry your voice experience sucked- gosh I just love voice! I love to hear the words, the tones - all of it- so melodious- hell - after sl got voice i developed a new appreciation for fones! - Anyone wants to talk-talk, look me up! I love people's voices :)

I find the most interesting conversations are when I'm talking to myself. I'll have one of my alts transcribe tomorrow morning's rant as I'm looking for my cell phone and end up finding that its in my freezer and there's a melted pint of ice cream next to my pickup keys.

Yes Amar, but on a 1-to-1 basis right? With one specific person? Not that mumbo jumbo you can hear when everyone is talking at once. It's impossible to filter out.

I've always been happy with the way things are here without voice. The only time I can imagine using it, was if I had a closer relationship with someone.
I recently went to a meditation group which was voice led (only the leader was using voice), and it was really lovely. So I'd say it has its uses.

However, many of my friends don't have English as a first language, so text chat is a more effective medium; same goes for me when I'm using another language.

LOL...I don't think I look like anyone... Actually, I've had people come up to me saying I look like a friend of theirs, or a relative or something and I've never seen them before!
