As strange as it seems, it is almost as if the desert gets into your blood, it is hard to stay away. It has a strange, very stark beauty to it.

that's just the devil talking.

I have just returned from Damien's kitchen... aka hell hole, USA (also known as Phoenix, Arizona)

please, someone shoot me dead before i ever have to pass through that miserable place again. they have these things there they call trees. but they are not trees. they are either almost tall, water-deprived bushes, or puffy leaves on fat stumps (also known as palm *coff* trees - but they are not really trees. no shade can be had. i mean, seriously). and i had to drive with my A/C on in my car at all times. good thing i have an A/C. i have never used it before. LOL oh, and because i didn't know it never cools, even at night, everything in my purse melted the first night. like many wads of gum come together to form one big ball. even my lipstick drained out of its case. dammit. and yards are decorated with rocks and cacti. ingenius. Phoenix is like a dry, brittle, brown dead land that people persist on inhabiting... i don't get it.
My sister moved there, and I have to agree. 120º F is just evil.

Maybe at this time of year when it's winter... Sadly. the cost of airline tickets from where I live to Australia is prohibitive, so I'm unlikely to have the opportunity to find out.

It also makes a difference that Phoenix is a giant urban sprawl that feels a lot like LA, miles of pavement reflecting heat. The surrounding desert, can be truly beautiful. I actually quite enjoy the drive to Phoenix, except for having to step out of the air conditioned car... ;)

An update:

I have just returned from Damien's kitchen... aka hell hole, USA (also known as Phoenix, Arizona)

please, someone shoot me dead before i ever have to pass through that miserable place again. they have these things there they call trees. but they are not trees. they are either almost tall, water-deprived bushes, or puffy leaves on fat stumps (also known as palm *coff* trees - but they are not really trees. no shade can be had. i mean, seriously). and i had to drive with my A/C on in my car at all times. good thing i have an A/C. i have never used it before. LOL oh, and because i didn't know it never cools, even at night, everything in my purse melted the first night. like many wads of gum come together to form one big ball. even my lipstick drained out of its case. dammit. and yards are decorated with rocks and cacti. ingenius. Phoenix is like a dry, brittle, brown dead land that people persist on inhabiting... i don't get it.

seemed only expensive resorts designed to fool tourists into coming to Phoenix with their false brochures dared to upkeep grass, so i made sure to stay near any greenery i could find. LOL

they have some wacky looped freeway action going, and it took me a couple of circles around big ben before i figured out what was going on. HEY! there's Thomas Dr again. LOL i really should have invested in a map. every time i went driving i got lost. on the bright side, that is one sure way to learn a big city fast!

and a marvelous realization.... every 5th corner has a Circle K mini mart. drive 5 blocks, circle K. take as many twists and turns as you want on any side street of your choice, you will always be within walking distance of a circle k. that was very convenient every time something new melted in my purse.

on the good side, i spent many wonderful days with a dear friend (who has a fabulous A/C) and we had so much fun that while i couldn't wait to get the hell out of hell, i didn't want to leave. she has a 1 1/2 year old, and being with her makes me want another baby SO bad (but no way! LOL) i had the best time hanging with them, and i already miss them tons.

seriously- i did a lot of evening solo sight seeing, and really discovered that some parts were actually very livable. Phoenix itself is miserable, but Mesa was very nice. And Cave Creek is a totally cool town. if i had to live near Phoenix, i would choose Cave Creek. Friday night I went to the Cave Creek Coffee Co and had some nice wine and a cheese platter, listened to a live guitarist rock the place up (he was fabulous and amazing) and i made conversation with all sorts of wonderful people. this older couple sat near me at the bar, and at first the wife was leery of my conversation with her husband, so i made sure to address her more than him - and discovered that she had a wicked sense of humor. i wanted to take her home with me. crazy old woman. :) to my left, was Larry. LOL he was really infatuated with my animated personality and quite determined to have all of my attention, and also wanting to know i would share my cheese plate - which i did. but i made him share his beer. LOL he was fun, good looking, and interesting, but i did not want to take him home with me. LOLOL

i'm sure i will think of more things to say, but it took 12 hours of straight driving to get home, and i am exhausted. i took a few pictures of the rocks and dirt and tumbleweeds, but Damien probably doesn't want me exposing his hellish kitchen to the world, so i wont post them. they are quite uninteresting. who knew the mojave desert was so vast and desolate and hateful hot.

i am so happy to be back in the land of trees, and green, and bodies of water. green things have smell. and they are soft. but now, i have to deal with reality. wish me luck. ugh.
While you were in the Southwest would it have been so out of your way to swing by San Diego? Oh well, welcome home dear heart.
I like AZ but I've never been there in the summer. It dries my skin and makes my hair weird enough when it's not extremely hot. It's great to hear that you had such a good time. But it's always good to get home isn't it? Good luck with reality.

Did Ghosty and I know each other as children?

I found this while going through old photos when Ghosty and I moved into this apartment months ago and put it up on the fridge. LOLZ were had all around and we kept meaning to share it with all of you. He suddenly remembered to scan it this evening. Perhaps, it was meant to be all along :p

I think the AZ desert is beautiful on a huge scale. Just point your camera in any direction and you get a landscape out of Arizona Highways.

Last time I visited Phoenix it was great. Limo with a/c and ice bar from the airport to the golf club. Lush grass fairways and short rough with no annoying sandtraps, trees or water hazards - and beer bins every three holes or so. Steakhouse in the evening (I always ask my hosts to eat American - what is the point of pretending that the American version of European food is any good?) and a deep sleep in a big five star hotel bed before a brief business meeting in the morning and return to LA.

Good morning Threadsters,

It's all stormy this morning, only to give way to steam later this afternoon. I'm ready for some breakfast, what's on the menu?
