Good morning from THIS side of the Atlantic. May I throw in a problem I have based on review of several new postings in the forum, some of which have attracted the comment "Is it Friday already?"

My problem is the consequence of my English language bigotry.

I assume that the better the spelling, the punctuation and the grammar, the more worthwhile the content. Poor presentation I associate with lower intellect and therefore I am less interested in any arguments made, and I even worry in some cases (particularly where there is a tendency towards txtese) that I might be engaging with someone who is actually under-age. I am also conscious that trollers/griefers in the forum find it easier to act dumb than smart.

I am not apologising for this bigotry, however, but wondering why those for whom English is NOT their first language fail to point this out. There are several ways in which this can be done (in their forum profile, in their sig or in postings themselves) but most seem not to bother. As a result, I tend to treat them as dumb or under-age, which is probably not the case, and can lead to severe disgruntlement. I would, of course, be significantly more patient and helpful to those who were struggling to make themselves understood in a foreign language.

I would be interested in knowing how my fellow threadees view my bigotry, and any strategies you use or might recommend to mitigate what could be seen as xenophobia.

Guess you must all be asleep as this thread has nearly dropped off the front page..!!!

The forum was saying it was not a valid thread for a while, thus preventing my usual maintenance work . . .

Pep - re your supposed bigotry about the language - when I read your posts , in my head I hear your accent perfectly :)

Anyway- it would be nice if one knew right off for whom the language was foreign - but since you cannot- it seems safer to assume there are reasons for the lack of spelling and punctuation and let the content speak for it self. The only thing that annoys me no end is trying to decipher what the poster may have to say when they speak in some character affectation or L33t or such. Other than that, I don't care if they know the difference between there and their - and any one used to speaking to me in chat knows I need an interpreter to get thru my typos - you seem to manage nicely :)

Hooray, Brenda, that was frackin' HILARIOUS! I laughed out loud on that one.

So... on a totally different topic... what does everyone think of my idea to possibly get a tattoo in RL of the oryx cave painting that is my logo? Cheesy? Unrealistic? Cool? Or totally deluded?

It's hard for me to see the up close detail in the pic, but it looks like a beautiful painting, and likely would make a cool tattoo.

I always agitate about the a) pain and b) permanence of any tattoo, but that's my issue! :p

Good evening Pep

When I see someone post and it is obvious that english is not thier first language I grant a wider latitude. I make attempts to clarify the comments or questions so I can give a better response.

When I see people make posts that speak english and make posts with mispellings and slang I tend to pass. My answers and explainations will most likely be misunderstood.

I listen to a local radio program that orginates from Houston TX. Walton and Johnson take callers to discuss political issues. They warn callers to be concise and get to the point. They tell a caller getting on the show should say, "Hello I am XXXX, I am from XXXX, I think or I feel... What happens is the person gets on and says "How are you doing? I want to make a comment about ... or You were talking about ... and I want to ask... " They also hate the people that say "You know?" If a caller says "you know" three times they say you violated the "You Know Rule" and they hang up.

I find it annoying to talk to a young person today. Thier confersations are littered with "you know? uhh ah ohh uh you know?"

You know? I got way off track there you know?

I almost never say 'you know', and find it rare among my friends as well. I use 'Do you know what I mean' when I really am asking if they understand, but that's about as close as I get. Lots of 'uhhh's though. I'm not a great public speaker, by any means.

Just a random comment from a dozing kitty...

If all the posts on this thread were printed out on A4 sheets, would they be able to paper the whole of the government building in Linden Village with them yet?

LOL, CX..I suspect every generation has issues with a younger generation's language skills, or lack thereof. I recall my grandmother telling me stories about how frustrated she was with some of my mom and aunt's high school friends when those friends would stop by the house to chat. All their 1940's newfangled vocabulary and expressions! :D

Oh and I learned not to get my grandmother started on "those" kids' outrageous dancing styles!! :p

I keep wondering if there's someone who works with the forums that we could ask to make a text document of this thread.

I thought about starting to print out all the posts, but I got tired thinking about it. :)

That's a good thing, not a bad thing, from my viewpoint. It just boosts my ego!

Noon? Light weight.

Try 5 or 6! Bah... kids these days are a whole new caliber of lazy. We're developing our natural born skills to take the best advantage of them we can.

Why, just the other day I didn't wake up until 6:02, breaking my previous record of 5:53!
