I am so glad I read this thread. I was unaware of Facebooks policy change and had an account there collecting dust. I've tidied up that loose end.

Linden Lab thinks that by tying SL closely to FaceBook and Twitter that they'll snarf up some of those millions of customers.

Instead, both FB/Twitter and SL are *losing* customers, as people decide which social networking venue is more important to them.

Not sure what the hype is about, I just checked my RL facebook page and I can' see any linking of Tegg Bode to it by LL or an account created by LL for Tegg Bode.

Tegg - we're not saying that LL links it. LL is not creating facebook accounts for you.

So then it's not really LL's fault if someone volountarily creates a Facebook Account for their Avatar or posts a link to their FB acount in their profile?

No.

Facebook had a program where other service providers could link your FB account to their service, and when you bought something from the service it would show up on your FB wall. The sequence of events is a bit confusing, but at one point people were reporting purchases showing up ("Joe Smith just bought a Corn Pulverizer with Shuck Sanitizer from Amazing Auctions" with no explicit action or approval. They just settled a class action suit over this, and in the process changed their security settings to supposedly be simpler and easier for people to understand. I guess they are saying there was a "don't embarrass me by letting people know what I'm buying" option that people didn't understand. The problem is the "simpler" options mean that if you're in search you can't keep people from searching your email address any more, which is really bleeping stupid.

Argent - that's on the level with them harvesting email addresses from aol, then slapping you on everyone's potential contact board.

When I was in there, yesterday.....there are several pages of "suggested" contacts....their rl photo shows up. I don't know who half of those people are, but at one time or another they sent me an email from an aol address. That could go back 12 years.
Click on their photo - and I assume you have all their information in front of you - I'm not sure - I may go back and check.

It includes:
1) business contacts that I know very well (but not well enough to let them know that I do business in SL)

2) people who requested info from my business web site - anonymously

3) people that I corresponded with from several trade related message boards/forums
(some times anonymously - they only knew your forum handle and email)

4) people from SL - mostly business, say a blog needed a pic that could only be sent via email - or someone you wanted to stay in touch with outside of SL - but still anonymously!

5) people I just don't have a clue where they came from!

So my question was....does msn do this email address harvesting too? does yahoo?

Now - since facebook changed all the security settings - and defaulted to some very specific information - I did not get an announcement....maybe because I had deactivated the account - sort of sounds like they didn't tell even people with an active account, from some comments in this thread.

And there are tons of people out there, that still left their account up - walked away -and have no idea they did that.

And even when I went back in, and tried to verify - - for someone who lives half of their life on a computer - - I can NOT make heads or tails of their setting page. An average user is not going to grasp it.....what about a young person with all their stuff floating around?

You have a venue here, which encourages anonymity (am I wrong?)....encourages exploration....some times adult activities....some times very intensive explorations....the whole premise is that those explorations can be done here, due to anonymity......

........sending people (not just sending - promoting)......to another venue which encourages the exact opposite - FULL Disclosure....not only encourages, but practically demands now, with the new default info......

WITH NO SECURITY WARNING.

That WAS SL...but it has been replaced by one where $$ will dictate how it operates..providing ...The More Predictable Experience. (tm)

Not everyone is savvy enough to use a dozen email addresses to compartmentalize their life.

I'm generally pretty savvy about that...not sure what happened the day I plugged it in....but when I was checking yesterday, I had two email addresses plugged in on the fb control panel. Not sure why. One was the junk email address and one was the good address. Maybe they asked for one address to send legitimate fb info to (such as important info about changing settings)....and the other address was for public view. I'm not sure. It was hard to determine what the original settings were.

Even if I had plugged in the junk address as main contact address....there would have been a ton of aol people show up on that one, as well.....and I definitely would not know who they heck they were.....since that was the "I'm hiding" address. And they probably were too.

I only have one and haven't seen any sign of LL linking my Facebook account to my SL avatars.
If I were to list my Email address on either site it's not their fault if I did so.
