Easy access on your home page for Twitter and Facebook now! Woo hoo!
To "stay in the loop".....did you join? or do you already have accounts there?
I canceled the Mickey name account on Facebook, because suddenly everyone on aol that I had EVER sent an email to, or vice versa (mostly business contacts)....showed up on my page as potential contacts, and I showed up on theirs as Mickey. Not Cool. My SL gig is private. Are you aware of this?
When you sign up for Facebook....did you use your real name? and is this Cool with you? What are the privacy/security ramifications of this for someone, when following SL ? I don't exactly want to test it out. Issues?
Is Twitter the same?

I do use facebook, and I do use my real name, but I use it to stay in contact with some family members that live out of my area. I like to look at my niece's vacation pictures and live vicariously thru her

Specifically.....would your real life photo show up on the list of followers?

I have two facebooks and I don't use either one of them. The stupidest thing is... the one associated with my RL name is linked to Eli's email address, and vice verse. Really dumb.

Is Twitter the same? Not cool. LL is revealing RL info, it would be easy to start putting avies names into face book to try catching some RL details. (I should say e-mail addys that you might have gotten through various means.) I'm glad that I'm not in the loop on this one.

So, you've got some overlap going on there. Risky. Is there a control to not display your email addresses?

Eli, I think you can update your email addy's there. But, you might have to use a 3rd email addy for your SL name before you are able to use your RL email addy for your RL name. that sounded very to me when i just read it back to myself...

I don't pay much attention to FB at all, but on the other hand there's not much separation for me between RL and SL. As Popeye would say.... "I yam what I yam." I'm not at all concerned about folks finding out my RL deets. I do however understand and respect people who do care.

I'm glad that I'm not in the loop on this one. I think I fudged the rules and have an account that's in my SL name.. and another that's in my RL. I honestly want to stay in touch, but not to the point where I find my RL self stalked.

"IF" you actually used the accounts....would you care if you ran into a nutcase on SL? Or would you care if someone at work (who might be a nutcase, as well)....discovered your identity and access to you.... in SL?

I have a Facebook account for this avatar name. It doesn't actually have any useful information about anything on there. I use it for playing Facebook applications where you have to invite perfect strangers onto your various teams. Couldn't be bothered to make up another name. So, if anyone is doing the same, "friend" me. I need someone to slay my Castle Age dragon

I just sent the fallowing tosecurity@lindenlabs.com. Its supposed to be for bugs that reveal RL info so I hope that's the right coarse of action. From: someone In your infinite wisdom you've partnered with face book and some our SL e-mails are linked to our RL profiles. You are releasing private information about a lot of your residents. People that I have e-mailed are now getting notices that I might be part of their network. I don't want my RL account being associated with SL so I have changed my email with facebook. Some of your customers may not realize this is happening and not know that they need to take steps to protect their identification. The only reason I found out about this is a forum post.

From: Eli Schlegal I run into nut-cases DAILY on SL. hehe. Exactly. So what if a nutcase is reading now.....and types your SL name into Facebook....will they find your RL email address? Can they cross-reference that email address with your RL Facebook account? You think you better run and fix that?

Rafe - I think that is specific to aol users.....but I'm wondering about msn users and others as well. To be more specific....when my Mickey name showed up on all those business contacts pages....the email address that I used, showed up as well - instant match (verifying identity). The mistake was using the email address that I had used for business....but I had no way of knowing that was going to happen. Just want to make sure others are aware of it, before busting out into The Loop.

Facebook lets you find contacts based on e-mail not matter what the e-mail client is but not knowing the exact nature I hope it is AOL only. That still effects a lot of people's personal and business lives.

I guess this is for those who put their RL info in their SL profiles. It may help get those people to join SL as discussed before. To each there own and if it helps with membership then we win in the long run.

I'm all about encouraging new users, but just want to make sure the old users who want to join in with the twittering and facebooking....take some precautions on email addresses and rl info and cross-referencing. Just not sure what all the precautions should be. Easy to just sign-up and bust it out, without thinking first.

Facebook recently changed their security policies. Could that have something to do with the change? From: An anonymous contributor on slashdot "Facebook launched new privacy settings this week. Cosmetically, this means that the settings are explained more clearly and are marginally easier to manage. Unfortunately, some of the most significant changes actually make preserving privacy harder for its users: profile elements that could previously be restricted to 'Only Friends' are now designated as irrevocably publicly available: 'Publicly available information includes your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, friend list, and Pages.' Where you could previously preserve the privacy of this information and remain publicly searchable only by name, Facebook now forces you to either give up this information (including your current city!) to anyone with a Facebook account, or to restrict your search visibility — which of course limits the usefulness of the site far beyond how not publicly sharing your profile picture would. That Facebook made this change while simultaneously rolling out major changes to the privacy settings interface seems disingenuous."

I personally don't care about the issue as I don't use FaceBook but there are people that have had serious stalker issues in SL and I can see this pushing a few of them away from the grid.

I hardly ever used Facebook but the new privacy settings ticked me off enough to finally delete it, no big loss but they are extremely arrogant with rolling this out. If I'd wanted to share the information they expect me to share, I wouldn't have changed my privacy settings previously not to share it.
I guess a few SL'ers could be caught out with email addresses that work for an SL account and a Facebook account.

I thought you had to use a real name for facebook - that using your SL name was against their rules.
Therefore I never understood why the Lindens are expecting anyone to do this for them.

Nope. I won't use Twitter or Facebook, either as my avatar name or my real name. Not the slightest bit interested in doing so.
I have had precisely ONE relative suggest that I ought to get on Facebook, so it would be easier to stay in touch. I can use their direct e-mail for that just fine, thank you.

How can you tell whether your SL identity is being outed on your Facebook page?
I signed up months ago because my friends and cousins all are on it, but never looked at it.
I'm in there now, but damn it's confusing.
