From: Raymond Figtree I know it sounds bad but compared to 13.0 it's heaven...I only had my shoe up my ass once yesterday. Ha, so I'm not the only person that happens to, you are lucky it's only your shoes... often when I cross between Dorje and Gyaltsan I find my shoes, my hair, my feather and my jewelry jammed up there.

Back in the good old days people used to sit around waiting to see how long they were going to be locked out of SL while they did the updates. These days we all seem to sit around wondering if SL will run at all when they're done fixing it.
I don't care about mirrors or voice chat, that's not why I use SL. Given the choice I'd rather have a buggy, basic client that worked.
3 hours until I find out if I get to keep my friends and my business.

From: Lota Lyon I havn't been able to use the so called optional "update" since it came out day one. My system is a one year old Dell Dimensions with a Pentium 4 @ 3.20GHz with 1.75 GB Ram and a Radeon X600 Video card (a 256 Ram card) so i wouldn't call it antiquated. It runs Doom3, Half-Life2 and Far Cry all at max. graphics without so much as a burp, which are all pretty graphics intensive games. I also played WoW for awhile with my hubby without a hitch... its only this so called updated 14 that gives me the error message "settings (something)"... it flashes so fast i can't even read it... and won't even load the log on screen.
Lota - I have a Gateway laptop with the Mobility Radeon X600 and had exactly the same experience as you with 1.14. I ended up downloading the latest drivers for it, and now it runs just fine. This was not easy though - the ATI site directed me to Gateway for video drivers, and the Gateway site didn't have any. I ended up downloading from a third party site - http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/3416/Good luck this afternoon.............to all of you <grin>

In my time in SL I have learned a few things.
1. Every update has its share of problems. I remember a full point release so bad they went to the next full point release in less than 2 weeks.
2. Expect commerce to grind to a screeching halt on update day as people cope with the usual culprits of problems. Failed TPs, Borked money transactions, Lost IM's and inventory, and the perennial you must update to log in -> update -> you must update to log in cycle.
3. A certain percentage won't be able to log in at all.
4. Sims will crash.
5. Clients will crash.
That said... LL will " be on the case" and "working hard to resolve the issues". Those will be the only messages we will get, assuming we get any.
A certain percentage of folks will be yelling in the forums that this is the worst update EVER and the last straw they are quitting. Some actually will quit, most won't, and the ones that do a percentage will return in a few weeks/months. Mean time the flow of newbies will keep churning so LL doesn't really care about those that go and stay gone.
We will get a whole series if fixes over the next couple weeks. Some will actually fix something while others break something new.
Just about the time the game is running well it will be time for a major update.
The reality is with such a wide range of machines people own its impossible for LL to make SL run flawlessly on every possible box out there. They have to shoot for something that works passably for the majority. Thier definition of passable may not be your own definition of it.
I am running SL on a 3 year old Pentium P4 3.2 hyperthreaded with a NVidea 5750 SS2 Ultra card and 1 Gig Ram. I have almost 0 problems. At home on Dragon Isle I routinely pull 97 FPS on my client. Even on the mainland I rarely experience crippling Lag although I do lag.
Alot of the issues people experience are Lag related. Lag can be controlled to a great extent by landowners. Problem is very few are willing to do it. It's a huge amount of work and many mainland land owners take the attitude of why should I work that hard and make sacrifices so the $%^$# neighbor can just use more resources and we are back to square 1. They have a point BUT if enough landowners get together and work at it a real difference can be made.
Yes Updates are rough. Yes LL often makes mistakes with them. But are we the residents of SL doing our share of the work to make SL a pleasant place to work and play for other residents?

Thank you so much Taylor Bayliss for your input. I've taken your advice and DL'd the drivers and will install them after making a restore point. Again thanks for your help and best wishes... I also hope things go great with you hon... ))

I have learned I must always keep the installers for older versions of the client so that I can go back if needed. But with a required update that will not be a safety net any more. I really think the hardware requirements are outrageous and hard to keep up with. With the 1.14 client my laptop has suddenly become unusable. I am only lucky I happened to buy a new desktop PC a few weeks before the upgrade, otherwise I would have been locked out already. But it was planned my spouse would be using the laptop and we would go into SL together from now on. Not so. The laptop is sitting unused in the cupboard and looking sad The desktop PC has already been affected by the upgrade from 1.13 to 1.14, it used to be able to run three clients at once and that is now back to two, with frequent crashes. Within two months of investing US$2400 in it! On the other hand: They say it is an upgrade, they say it will FIX bugs, not introduce them. So maybe the laptop will be working again tonight? We will have to wait and see...

I've not checked the blog this week but last weeks postponed upgrade sounded pretty positive it would address the earlier hardware incompatibility. Fingers crossed

You are such a bunch of Doomsayers!
You never know the update may run smoothly and everything may be fine. I know this is SL we are talking about but you've got to remain optimistic or you will all end up chucking yourselves off of buildings or under trains.
POSITIVE ATTIDUDES!

I ran the beta for a bit last night it worked fine for me, don't know if that means anything. I have an average machine: P4 2.8 Ghz, 2.5 Gigs RAM, and importantly a low end Radeon X300 graphics card with the original drivers. No issues I can see, so maybe there is hope.

Hey, my final remarks were rather hopeful and positive. I have tried throwing myself off a building, but that does not help. Maybe I should enable damage first?

LMAO Go to Achemon. You can get a running start from the Zen Gardens there before you throw yourself on the tracks.

Soooo ... if I fly into it really fast .. it would count as throwing myself under it? .. Hmmm Seriously though, I was flying last night around Bliss looking for the place where the balloon ride started and was amazed at the debris just floating in mid air .. at one point, a large letter 'B' as if a shop sign had exploded. Yes, yes, I'm positive that's what happened, a shop sign exploded!

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst!
It's always a gamble when a new client comes out. I haven't been using the first look viewer recently and I've had ok performance with it before. Crosses fingers.

I know of some trains for sale, that way you could throw yourself under it as many times as you wanted.

Er. 2.6GHz P4 here. 768Mb RAM. 7300GS. In other words, an older computer.
1.14 (at least the client-side stuff) works pretty well for me (with all the graphics options except view distance turned on or as high as they can go), albeit with a fairly low framerate, so I have doubts that SL is really excluding people with older computers.
Only problem is a lot of hard drive thrashing when I go somewhere with a lot of different hi-res textures, and I'm not entirely sure that wouldn't be at least ameliorated if I ever bothered to defrag. Which I don't. Bad geek. *slaps own wrist*
