I have a couple of skins but don't really need them. All I really need is tattoos for the body parts. My face is the one I've come up with after hours of tweaking. I've even been complimented on my makeup! Haha. I have one skin that actually does have heavier makeup and it's nice, but doesn't really transform the features below, and that's why I love it for when I feel more dramatic.

You don't really need a skin, but there are plenty of good ones out there.

Amazing that not even the most experienced users who posted here did link the most recent (I think) long thread about avatar skins:

Of course, you are right... after all this is our Second Life ^^.

Anyway, for my alt it would be hard to be really realistic anyway... She is a Drow (Dark Elf female. A good friend showed me her Drow... told a lot about this fantasy race and I have fallen in love with them :P).

Morwen.

Haven't had the pleasure yet to meet Drow's but from what I've seen on websites they look beautiful!

And yes, skinning is a subject that is so interesting because of all the different opinions. (And all of the different shapes and forms we take on in SL)

LOL @ Morwen :)

Anyway, I'll take this as a chance to inform all the newbies reading this thread that Portia Sin (Sin Skins) has a special offer for residents up to 30 days old.

They can get for a whopping 1L$ a pack with 6? 8? I don't remember, different shades. With and without freckles.

Thought I had to share this.

Female clubber from the inventory library clothing folder is what my building alt wears. It's really nice.

I've worn my Nora Cream (RFL flowers makeup) for aaages, though a friend had some real eyebrow dramas with one of those (had to reshape hers). That and my 00 shade Starley "charmed" skin are the only two I wear these days. I've also used skins from Nomine and Canimal. They all have good and not so good points, and some others which looked awesome on friends looked bad on me. Who makes the best? I don't think you could say.

Overall, I still think my CS Pasport Malibu skin, which was free, is as good as any demos i;ve seen

Best!

I think there are many good skin designers in SL.

As for as who is the best I think it is a perssonal choice. Some ppl prefer realistic some don't some prefer alot of makeup some don't.

I wear Miss November from Skin Flicks myself but like many others from the same store. I also feel that Naughty has very nice quality skins.

But that is just my opinion you will have to try the samples to decide for yourself.

Robin Sojourner's skins are beautiful, just gorgeous.

I love Robin as a designer of clothes and hair, and I was really looking forward to trying out her skins, too.

I hated them. They looked terrible on my AV.

So there really isn't any "best" skin, there's just best skin for a particular AV.

Add another vote for X2:Exotica from me.. Fusion/Pale in particular.

The more realistic the skin starts to look, the more I notice it's not and it ends up feeling very "fake". I guess I just make far more allowances for something that looks drawn :).

I think it depends a lot on how far away you are. Over, say, 5-10m away, the more realistic skins look far better. Closer up, the less "realistic" skins look better. To my eye, anyway.

RAC hands down in my opinion. Expensive but worth it. I love mine.

It IS a good one, that, though there are some problems with the thighs.

I decided to take the plunge and try making my own skin. The result may look hand-drawn (since it is) but I really like that anytime I want to have a different makeup version I can draw it myself and upload.

These don't work on my AV (though I love the look on others) but even if they did, 4000L for one skin and makeup is a bit much. The much more established skin makers charge as much for many different makeup options and mod rights. Just MHO. Perhaps the maker has altered their approach since I last checked. My boyfriend does have a skin from there and it looks great on him.

I favor skins from TaP, Sachi Vixen's Adam N Eve, Starley's skins from CS, and Canimal who does great freckles. Also have some from Nyte and Day and Lost (Paris Athletic series I think). I switch them around based on what I am wearing :)

I wonder if this was the *Veiny* one I purchased. Was like the skin was see-thru...really gross.

It seems like every time this subject comes up I get the urge to go skin shopping. :) I have a CS Passport skin that I wore for a long time. I then found Galas skins and have a collection of those. Lately I have been wearing one of Sachi Vixen's that I really like. I find that skins are very much a matter of taste (I prefer just a samll amount of make-up) and like the others have said there are LOTS of beautiful skins out there that just don't look right on me. When skin shopping I usually go from store to store picking up lots of demos then take them all back home an start trying them out.

Absolutely vital. Just buy 1$ demos you quite like the look of and soak test them before parting with your hard earned dosh. So often what looks good in a picture just doesn't gel on the avatar.

Oh, and take a look at them in different light. Shadows can make a very nice skin look entirely different.

Skin redesign
01-26-2007 08:29
Great thread - Just wanted to plumb the expertise here....

I have a freebie skin (Sharn Medium) which im very happy with despite having tried on expensive ones from all over the place.

My only issue is that I want a version of the same that it a bit darker, and with a bit less lipstick!

Only problem is the skin has no designer/creator details.

Ideally id like to track down the original person so I can put some money their way, but if not who would you suggest for a custom adaption/version of an existing skin?

Thanks in advance

I love my skin!
01-26-2007 09:17
I will never change from my "Natural Skin - Early Summer Bikini Stripes" and love to wear things that show off a bit of the lighter skin. Can't remember where it's from but I have seen it a few times since and will find out if you are interested and you're welcome to have a look too - just contact me in world. I think I have a few demo skins... some places let you buy a demo skin for L$1 and as skin is such a major purchase (particularly if like me you plan to show it off quite a lot) that demos are pretty essential!

It's important to get your general shape and look right too - I had mine done for me by a friend when I was new - if you are interested she will do you a nice one for L$100 or a custom one at L$200 - she's brilliant at doing it. Again, ask me in world if you are interested.
