From: Manstan Beaumont Interesting, seems most people are complaining about the new viewer, saying they wont download/install it till they have to. But what about doing something about it? I'd like to see some numbers. How many people downloaded the new viewer? Of those how many uninstalled it and reinstalled the old viewer? How many people will actually be using the voice chat? With he new viewer is SL more or less stable? And how many people are going to unite to protest the new viewer?
Complaining in the forums is not going to change anything. Get out there and do something about it. I tried the Beta versions repeatedly, and avidly gave my feedback on what did and mostly did not work. They did listen on a few points, but steamrollered right on along in spite of most of the complaints. I downloaded the new viewer, determined it requires me to use a window 50% larger than I used to just to accommodate their bloated chatterbox, and then banned Voice in my sim and on my parcel, and reverted to the older viewer. I will NEVER be using Voice Chat. Period. It ruins all immersion in roleplaying when I am forced to hear the RL voices of the Players and they are forced to hear mine. Especially when one person plays multiple avatars at the same time. The new viewer does seem no less stable than the earlier one. It's just slower and less usable for me because I am forced to run it in larger windows. Protest? Why bother? They didn't listen to calm, well-reasoned discussions and complaints throughout most of the development cycle, so why should we believe they will listen to protests? What I am doing about it: Banned Voice where I can. Informed all my contacts that if they pester me about using Voice they will forfeit all contact with me. Will use the old viewer as long as I can, then will have to get a whole new computer to cope with their badly designed user interface.

From: Ann Launay If? His viewer doesn't eliminate the (debatable) features LL adds, it only makes them work the way they should. He was already downloading the new source code last night when I checked his blog. Need to check it again. Apparently, he concurrs with most of us that think the commcenter is in need of work. "I will eventually make a release based on the voice viewer, but most likely not before the initial wave of voice related bugs is fixed and not before I have changed the user interface towards something that is actually user friendly (and guess what, the second will probably be a achieved a lot quicker than the first). Meanwhile I wanted to make an 18g. It fixes one possible crash, but also suppresses the notice that an optional update 1.18.1.2 is available, which will save you the click and the small interruption when logging in." Thank you, Nicholaz. At least YOU get it, unlike LL and their rabid minions.

I, too, never install main grid updates until absolutely forced to. Also, I always keep the .exe for the viewer I'm running on my local disk, in case I accidently upgrade.
And I also use Nicholaz's viewer. I think anyone with a memory-challenged PC should use it, as Nicholaz is much more aggressive in pursuing memory leaks than LL is.

I never said he didn't but, once LL makes Voice mandatory, I'm not sure he'll have any choice....I mean, unless he gives up fixing their oversights altogether. (Please god, no.) If LL says we have to use version 1.18.1.x, any work he does will also have to be geared towards that. *shrug*

I never download optional versions until it's mandatory. My feeling is, especially with SL, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I have no interest in voice. I find that when I voice chat(skype or vent), it's distracting and I can't keep up with what's going on. Also, I am addicted to "chat history."

yes, how about everybody goes to the JIRA to vote against the "chatterbox", it's already there as an issue...i know i voted against it almost 2 months ago when i saw it for the first time, it's ATROCIOUS (and makes it impossible to balance IMs against the main chat)

not bamboozled. Its right there in the blog.

I cant say Ive ever downloaded ANYTHING, anywhere, that I havent read the specs on first. Downloading on sheer faith doesnt sound like a stable thing to do. So I naturally looked at the blog before blindly downloading, and there it was, chat download. That said, I did download this thing, tho I have no intention of using voice on a regular basis, if at all. I concur with many of the naysayers and think the interface sucked. SL interfaces tend to be relatively intuitive, this one wasnt as intuitive as it should be. Thumbs down so far.

I have asked in previous posts if there would be any support for independently operated grids that were voice free. Independently operated sims running on independently operated grids in the vein of the work being done by the folks at opensecondlife.org and www.deepgrid.com. I don't think I got any responses to the question at all. In my initial post I asked what conversational themes people are hearing at newcomer areas. So far I have indentified 5 major themes: 1. Second Life is, in a manner of speaking, a "fouled up piece of manure". 2. Second Life users other than the speaker are "fouling rectal orifices". 3. The speaker wants to see a real life picture of everyone. 4. Whistling and sound clips. 5. The most important thing in the world is be in click to talk mode.

Haven't updated yet, I'll hold off as long as I can... I read the forums first so I knew I didnt wanna install it before asking my friends about it... not one of them like it. Every one of them in fact said its garbage and they hate it. I stay on the last viewer as long as I can.

No choice as to whether to make it support Voice. My first post in this thread was in reference to someone suggesting that those of us using Nicholaz's viewer were in some way trying to hide from Voice.

I have downloaded the new viewer but have not installed it. I might try it sometime just out of curiosity to see what it is like, but I will probably revert quickly to the non-voice Nicholaz version. I am basically not interested in bringing my RL voice into SL or in listening to others' RL voices. Sounds like plenty of others feel the same way, so I'm sure I will be able to find people to type chat with.

I never download any software upgrade unless it's mandatory, or I'm having some kind of problem that I think the upgrade may solve.
That goes for RL and SL.
Nope, I didn't download it.

From: Jig Chippewa The new viewer is fine. Long Live change. This is Computer Age NOT Middle Age. lol. I'll send you a fiddle Nero. Your particular computer build may be compatible with the new viewer but that hardly makes the new viewer universally "fine." It's obvious to anyone who can look beyond themselves that the viewer, like all previous initial releases of new viewers, is causing performance problems with some customers. I'm not going to download and install the new viewer for at least a few weeks since the viewer version I am currently using performs sufficiently for my purposes and I have no interest in using the voice interface. After Linden Labs addresses bugs that have popped up with the initial release of this viewer, I will probably eventually install the updated version of it because it is supposed to have fixes to certain bugs and there may be certain situations where I may want to hear people using the voice interface.

I haven't downloaded the new viewer, I always wait and see how many problems people have with them first and normally only download when we have no option. If something isn't broke I don't try to fix it just in case I do break it
