Eek! I'm glad I haven't yet... a friend of mine HATES the new "communication" window. I'll just wait till it's mandatory, like other people here...

I never download an update until it becomes mandatory, or Nicholaz has his version for it.

How will you guys be able to hide in fear of new features if Nicolaz includes voice into his viewer?

It's not about fear Sonny, (at least for me) it's about his viewer being consistantly better than the official one. He fixes things the updates break, time after time.

I downloaded it and it's running fine. You know you will have to download a new version eventually, so why not get it over with. Keep the old download in storage, just in case you need to revert.

If? His viewer doesn't eliminate the (debatable) features LL adds, it only makes them work the way they should. He was already downloading the new source code last night when I checked his blog.

I did, but I keep older versions of the viewer, so I can backlevel easily.

I only downloaded it long enough to turn OFF voice on my parcel, then reinstalled the older version.

Exactly what I did.

Interesting, seems most people are complaining about the new viewer, saying they wont download/install it till they have to. But what about doing something about it?
I'd like to see some numbers. How many people downloaded the new viewer?
Of those how many uninstalled it and reinstalled the old viewer?
How many people will actually be using the voice chat?
With he new viewer is SL more or less stable?
And how many people are going to unite to protest the new viewer?

Complaining in the forums is not going to change anything. Get out there and do something about it.

I wish I had manually downloaded the old version of the viewer when I had the chance. :( I won't make *that* mistake again.

On top of that, I also made the mistake of installing the voice viewer. Now I'm sad. The new UI is not as good as the old one - chat and IM windows are wonky, and now when panning the camera in build mode, every now and then the entire viewer freezes for up to 30 seconds. It's very frustrating.

And to top it all off, I have no intentions of ever using voice.

the new viewer is working for me, and I for one haven't found the Communicator window to be all THAT bad.

But...no more music! Apparently Voice has knocked it out.

It's been doing that for me for the last month or so.

Haven't dowloaded it and don't intend to until they make me. From what I've read, the overwhelming majority (on the forums anyway) don't like the new viewer at all. I don't plan to use voice, but wouldn't have problem with having to download a voice enabled viewer if it didn't get all of the bad "reviews" that this one is getting. I thought, though, that we weren't going to be "forced" to download a viewer anymore? Isn't that what the whole day of liberation or whatever was about? Or is that after this viewer? I'm not a good organizer, but if someone wants to organize something against the new viewer interface, I'll sign up! And that's sight unseen!

Voice also causes cancer and poverty.

I haven't downloaded the new viewer, and refuse to do so until it's mandatory. There's no new features in there that I care for, nor are there any significant and relevant bug fixes that I can see.

And I'm annoyed as hell that I have to explicitly decline the new download each and every time that I log in.

If (and only if) I could just ignore the voice features and continue to use the Second Life client in the way that I have become accustomed, I would probably download it. But since Linden Labs has seen fit to change the core interface in some misguided attempt to make everything revolve around audio chat (to the exlusion of everything else), I am simply and adamantly not interested.

Downloaded and installed, based on the info available and the "hey, they didn't say anything about this, so I guess it's a patch!" ness of it all. Discovered it was voice, complete with the unchanged communication window that I hated so much in First Look. Uninstalled and downgraded back to the previous version as soon as I got my hands on the link.

I don't really feel one way or another about voice itself, but until that communications window is fixed, I'm going to avoid this version like the plague.

Yes they wanted to foist it on us with stealth!
08-03-2007 10:20
Or few would try it so they could get feedback on it!

Well the IM bar goes deeper into the screen blocking our viewing arc, and cant be set shallower. And god knows why Its longer down the page, because the close button to shut down individual tabs is gone!!!!!!!!!!!

Now everytime SL restarts after it crashes (which is frequently lately even before this latest stealth downgrade) It automatically brings up the options screen to set at voice or not!
Trouble is, it still eventually logged me on to SL set to Voice, even though I left it on the default non voice option! And now i cant turn it off so the only way to delete IM tabs generated by others is to wait for the next crash 1/2 hr or so!
Is that how SL fixed the lack of CLOSE Button problem? :D

Well few ppl wanted it. And they foisted it on us just to confirm our fears that it was yet another dissaster waiting to happen. Just so we could all watch it self implode on activation :D

They just dont listen when we say NO, to more disasterers just waiting to happen :(

Congradualtions SL you let masses of bugs back up developing yet another shiny toy no-one seriously wants, only to let it fall flat on SL residents :( So we can yet again marvel at the lack of fruits your labours of love inflict on us :(

Hope you are happy lindens, cause we arnt!!!!!!!

I never install a non-mandotory update. I did that once and regretted it for more than a month because it made my laptop unusable for SL.
Nowadays I download the software first before installing it, so that I will always have a copy of the previous version available in case I want to go back.

I have looked at the release notes of the new version. They DO mention voice. They mention it in a way as if it has always been there: "Fixed this, changed that" But nowhere is a word about INTRODUCING voice.

So the release notes are lying. You cannot change or fix something that was not there before.

I D/L'd and installed it. The last one was SOOOOOO bad that it needed a replacement ASAP.

I agree with all the bad things i've read so far about the new viewer (voice, "communications", etc). I strongly object to voice being forced on me as a default (I have to turn it off, rather than me having the option to turn it on if I want it..... it's a subtle difference).

But to be fair, I have something positive to say about it:
The last viewer had a huge memory leak. We're talking gigantic.
It was so bad that after leaving SL, i would need to go into system processes, shut down SL which was still running as a process long after I had exited SL, and purge that portion of my system memory. This new one seems to be much better in that area.

Nah, the music is still there. Adjust the level in Preferences/Audio & Video.

In the past I think I've always downloaded the new viewers without thinking about it. Because of all the problems this week, however, I declined downloading it and checked the forums first. I'd had enough headaches and didn't want to add to them. Am I ever glad I didn't download it. I will never automatically download an optional viewer ever again. Let others be the guinea pigs!
