It's a shame the message that one gets if one tries to log in with the old viewer is so uninformative. It would be interesting to see what percentage of existing users would and would not pick the voice client if they were fully informed. The "new version" message I got didn't mention voice at all, althouth I already knew what was going on.
The download page also doesn't offer a choice, and there's no "change to a different viewer" option in the SL interface. If there were, then one might get a better idea of whether people really want voice or not.
What are the topics of conversation that you are seeing at the new user hangouts like the Ahern welcome area and Waterhead?

Me, I haven't. Thank bloody hell I read the forums before I tried to log in, and knew what the "recommended download" was.

I haven't. I learnt from experience that updates usually downgrade your pleasure.

I had a quick look, which I thought was rather brave of me, then coward that I am quickly fled back to the Nicholaz viewer. It was a horrible, horrible experience and one I hope never to repeat. Nicholaz, help! Quick!

I did, but I keep older versions of the viewer, so I can backlevel easily.
I only downloaded it long enough to turn OFF voice on my parcel, then reinstalled the older version.

I will download it tonight at home and make sure voice is turned off on my land. I will take a small look at the new features... and then I will switch most likely back to the old viewer.

Horrible Interface

What are the topics of conversation that you are seeing at the new user hangouts like the Ahern welcome area and Waterhead? Totally agree! I downloaded the new viewer thinking it was a typical "update" - no idea this was the client that supported voice and, even if I had known that, would have had NO idea the interface would change so drastically. I was horrified to log in and at first glance couldn't find my friends list. Finally found it...but then the chat, IM, and friends list are all interconnected. The chat/IM windows are huge...and cannot be resized vertically. Then there's the additional sound icon that obliterated the spot I had my Mystitool Hud - as well as the giant chat boxes overlapping my ZHAO. Fortunately a friend signed in about that time and pointed me to the addy to get the original viewer back. ( http://s3.amazonaws.com/download-secondlife-com/Second%20Life%201-18-0-6%20Setup.exe) Whew...back to normal. I don't have anything particularly against voice being an optional feature for those who enjoy that. I don't plan on using it. But surely voice could be added without the major use of screen real estate!!

I did it by accident, thinking after the last week it WAS a stability and performance patch....>WRONG< Thankfully, a kind person here in the forums posted the link to the old client and I upgraded back to the previous client.

I kept my old copies of the previous viewer, and just downloaded a seperate copy of the new one from the website. So far I have used the new one primarily to ban Voice from my land, and to determine that I now need to go from an 800 x 600 window to an 800 x 900 window to retain any sense of usability, because of the bloated Chatterbox UI. *sigh*
I'll probably go back to the previous viewer now, until they force us to use the Voice-enabled one.

I have never downloaded and installed an "optional" SL supplied viewer. Though I did play with the First Look voice thingie (just to see how my bad hearing be in that environment - I couldn't hear the one man talking (I could hear that he was talking, just couldn't understand him), but I could hear the woman, most of the time; I wore a tag that said something like "trying voice, but I am mute" .

I never download an optional until I read through here for a day or two, and see what other users are saying. This since a long while back when one optional broke Mac connectivity.
Also, I don't intend to use voice, so I don't have a good reason to download it anyway.
