From: Kitty Barnett If it happens to be public access and random people wander around/make themselves at home then not being able to landmark it probably significantly reduces the chance that they'll come back or start handing out landmarks to friends to come join in the big orgy they're throwing when I'm not around. People keep talking about this like it's some big problem. I don't believe it. I think you're snapping your fingers to keep tigers away.

From: Kitty Barnett I don't care what they're doing, particularly after listening to hundreds of different excuses about why they happen to be doing whatever I find them doing (one random guy went on and on about how much he liked the teddy bear on my bed and that he just had to invite his/a girl friend over to come see it... When I get an intruder on our place i just silently count from 21 to 30. ... that more or less covers the timespan that I set as the "splortch delay" in our psyke orbs. "splortch delay" because of the sound that a psyke orb makes when it kicks someone out. Sounds pretty much like the sound that an overripe melon makes when you drop it onto a concrete floor from higher than 25 meters.

From: Milla Janick Even at my advanced age I never found it that confusing.
The worst part was strange key combinations for obscure functions. Like the first time I turned on beacons and wasn't sure what I'd done or how to undo it. I eventually figured that part out.
I think they're barking up the wrong tree if they think the UI is the the main issue with new user retention. I say its more like "barking up only one tree in a forest". I've actually seen someone turning her back on SL after the first login with the reason "the user interface is awful and complicated".

What is the word equivalent to "misanthrope" if it's applied to avatars? Whatever it is, Kitty, you're one.

In my opinion, LL just have consern to get new residents to the SL.
and just ignore to preserv the current residents. The lifecicle of a resident is something very short ! The most new thing that we got was the SL voicer. How long ago ??
Everybody knows that everything on the internet must be in a endless improvement to provide all the time a better experience for the user and increase the lifecycle.
Why LL just take the wrong directions ?? Internet was not raised yesterday

I think they're barking up the wrong tree if they think the UI is the the main issue with new user retention. Having no experience with games or other programs beyond just basic windows stuff, I didn't find SL confusing as I had nothing to base it on. I just started clicking stuff. What I've always felt was lacking was the lack of information available on the interface. They just don't explain what all the stuff does. I still have no idea what half the tools do, or stuff on the Client menu, and don't even get me started on the Debug thingies. I don't think SL needs an easier interface, it just needs a fricking user's manual.

From: Kitty Barnett I've lived on the mainland, various private sims and now a detached homestead and it really doesn't seem to ever make any difference as to the amount of people who randomly show up where they're not wanted . Whether it's a lone one roaming around the sim, or a couple cuddling somewhere on the beach, or half a dozen throwing an impromptu party, or people having fun with the bed. This is baffling. This is just not the experience of most people, and I'm at a loss as to what could be the cause. Nonetheless, I have a solution for certain solitude, better than any security device. Just move to Zindra and list the parcel as "!!! XXX FREE SEX ORGY XXX !!! SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX !!!" They'll never find you. Ask anybody on Zindra.

From: Milla Janick Even at my advanced age I never found it that confusing. I think it's a combination of a learning curve (which really doesn't have anything much to do with the UI) and people not finding the incentive to want to bother to learn. Games gets away with "training tutorials" because people already want to play the game in the first place so they'll jump through the "press this to duck, press that to move" hoops because they *want* to learn/put up with it to get to the actual gameplay. Most people don't buy something and then spend an evening curled on the couch reading through the user manual but just want to instantly unwrap it, plug it in and play with it. If there's something they can't figure out along the way then they might look at it but then just to solve a specific problem. SL doesn't work like that (and those newbies who do jump ahead of the "tutorial" can't ever return to it later) and there's also no defined target audience or even a "if you like this then go here and there and there" (which is what showcase was supposed to be I guess). Most genuine newbies end up asking "so what do I do on here?" and the ones that don't come back are probably the ones who never did find an answer within their first few log-ons. And no amount of moving menus around will fix that.

From: Lindal Kidd What is the word equivalent to "misanthrope" if it's applied to avatars? Whatever it is, Kitty, you're one. Nah ah! That's so not true . I like people fine . But aside of the fun of redecorating the biggest reason I have land is to have a place where I can either be by myself and do whatever (or bring friends over) and *not* have to deal with random people half of the time. If I want to socialize I'll be out and about and be friendly and not yelling at anyone . But if I want to sort my inventory, or try on things I just bought, or just IM, or build, or script then I do want some peace away from other people and I'll tp to my home. Having people disrupt "private time" by appearing somewhere they have no business being is very annoying. And believe it or not I have put up with a whole lot ("whatcha doing?" "building" "oh... whatcha building?" "a dock" "ah.. you sell stuff?" "no" *few minutes of silence* "you're quiet" "yes, I'm building and I'd like to get this done" "wow.. no need to be rude!" *argument ensues*). --- Personal favourite (I cam outside and notice a guy playing trampoline with the access restrictions): XXX shouts: OH NO XXX shouts: I AM FUCKED OVER IN THE SKY XXX shouts: KITTY BARNETT XXX shouts: YOU NEED TO ENABLE ME XXX shouts: AAAAAHHHH XXX shouts: AAAHAHAHHAHHHHHHHHHH XXX shouts: GOD HELL IT XXX shouts: FUCK IT XXX shouts: STOP IT XXX shouts: NOW XXX shouts: GOD FUCK IT XXX shouts: JESUS AND HELL XXX shouts: HOLY INSANITY XXX shouts: AAAHAHAHHAHHHHHHHHHH XXX shouts: GOD HELL IT XXX shouts: NO XXX shouts: GO AWAY XXX shouts: FREE ME XXX shouts: OH WOW XXX shouts: LOL He went on like that for about 5-10 minutes (I ejected him about halfway through but he just flew back), all the while constantly bouncing up and down on the access restrictions, while I was trying to finish scripting something. I finally relented added him and let him drop down to the land. He was one of those "explorer types" and "just admiring the house" (uh huh ) and well behaved enough. All in all it took about an hour before he finally realized that yes I was really was busy, and no I really didn't want company and poof'ed back off. Add up dozens of those persistent types, hundreds of random happy wanderers and "make myself at home" exploring types over the course of close to 4 years half of which inevitably end up feeling insulted because I'm not letting them squat on my land, or because they have a god given right to go wherever they please and I don't have much patience left when people decide to "explore" and intrude.

People like that are most like underaged punks, who wouldn't be long for SL no matter how easy and descriptive it was. And if they are actual adults....SL probably is better off without them anyway. The great fun of my early days was trying to figure out SL, trying stuff, making mistakes, asking people stuff. With no computer background to speak of it was wide open for me. Unfortunately, over the years LL has managed to suck out most of the wonder, whinsey and what ifs of SL in favor of he More Predictable Experience (tm). The reult will be a safe, simple, SL that will be as drab and boring as all the mass produced garbage we get in RL. There are issues with SL retention yes, but LL has decided to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

If you don't want people teleporting in to your land, why don't you set an out of the way landing point and signboard it?

He laughed and I said you think it is funny when I report you to Linden and get you banned? He kept harassing me. He lol and said I did not say to stop and would only be banned from this sim. I said you should not have done it in the first place. I said no Linden could close your account. He LOL again and I reported him TP home, and he im me called me a bitch but never stopped harassing me. Wonder what is wrong with some of the people in SL?

From: Brenda Connolly Fanboi. I have Emerald, but don't use it anymore....not since knowing that 3 of it's developers were actually responsible for developing 3 different kinds of viewers with copybot functions...including CryoLife. I tend to shuffle around between Hippo and Snowglobe, I have used Cool Viewer, Onrez and Nicholaz viewers in the past.

Landing points or a telehub would just annoy me and friends where I don't mind if they visit or invite others over or use it to build something. It's an undetached sim with no parcel set to show in search so the only way to get to it would be through the world map... There isn't much of an argument you can make as to why you feel you need to tp to random sims you spot on the world map aside from entitlement or a desire to intrude on people. I could put "Keep Out" on the world map I guess, but somehow I think that would just only make things even worse .

I TP to sims on the world map all the time. But I don't bug people, and I stay clear of green dots. If you are annoyed by having someone walking across your sim a hundred meters away from you, then I guess I might, one day, bug you. Sorry about that, but I'm not going to stop exploring because of that, or because some people use exploring as an excuse for griefing. If that's not good enough, you should set your ESTATE to group access and put your friends in that group.
