Not including any testers (who, if they are in any way reliable, would abide by their NDA) there is no one here who can attest to the validity of anything about the viewer. No one knows what's in or what's out for sure. We've been told by official sources (the blog) that things have changed, been moved, but that most of the things we are used to are still there.........I believe most can deal with that type of change.

It's unrealistic to expect such huge changes as mesh imports..........that's a long way in the future.

So, I'll read along knowing that 90% of the statements are either guesses, wishes, assumptions, or just plain BS. That's why I asked.

I claim the BS ones!

What that means: We removed the features Milla Janick uses most frequently, or we made it looks like Blue Mars and just removed all the menus.

I was kind of hoping there might be something in there about improved support for multi-core CPUs, 64-bit operating systems and an improved cache system. That was stupid, wasn't it?

Instead they redesign the UI to solve the problem of abysmal retention rates. Did you guys put in a button for "Please don't dump me at one of your griefer filled craphole welcome areas, and send me somewhere with compatatively friendly, helpful people. Like Stepford."? That would help more than anything else you could do to the viewer.

That's conjecture.

Sure it's a comment too but you stated it as if you had information that it's fact about the viewer.

I suspected the comments (not just yours) were mostly BS but I wanted to make sure. Now that I know I can read what you all, in the know, say is not likely to contain an ounce of fact or truth to it. That's all wanted to know.

Oh, I should mention: the "leak" I described wasn't from a tester, but rather an accidental mailing to the wrong distribution list by a Linden employee. Even then, it didn't go public for a couple weeks, so even the recipients who weren't under NDA kept it relatively under wraps.

I'm not sure, however, why this amount of secrecy was deemed appropriate. If they were worried about the competition, it would make sense, although from all I've read and heard, it seems this is making the viewer more like every other application, rather than some new innovation that must be kept under wraps. My hunch is that they're trying to avoid premature hostile reactions, which is understandable enough, but it's risky. They're gambling a lot on having thought of everything without exposing it to a broad group of users.

That may make for a long and painful public beta, with the extra challenge of detecting the signal (missing functionality) in the noise (unfamiliarity).

That's conjecture.

Unless Howard is lying in the blog post, I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion.

The first couple of sentences I wrote are a joke.

I lamented the fact that he did not mention potential improvements I'd like to see.

Will we be able to use alternative viewers? I tend not to use SL viewers ...i've been doing that for last 2 years!

So Crapola 2.0 they can reserve for the Facebook crowd, I'd rather carry on with my 3rd party ones!

Reading the blog it says the third party viewers will remain available.......in fact there was quite a bit of praise to the open source people in the blog.

Guess you didn't read it.

I read it a bit different, to me it sounded like "If you want a viewer with useful features you like, go and make it yourself. And don't bother us."

Don't worry about it. Peggy is the only one able to read the blog.

Apparently the rest of us are just making crap up.

No I'm sure everyone here can read the blog. But I also saw immediate dissing of the new 2.0 viewer. Many stated features being added or removed that they did not know anything about. I read the blog..........some features that were added were talked about. Only one feature that was removed and talked about was the pie menu.

It happens a lot in these forums..........a select few can not accept anything LL does without throwing a hissy fit or making up wild stories. It's the same ones time after time. And in the case of this thread no one knows what they are talking about.

I think someone muted me.........:)

Yes, you're going back on my ignore list.

I do not appreciate being called a liar by someone who either can't or won't read my posts.

There's two features that are very likely to have been removed since they've been gone from the trunk source drop even while 1.23 was still in RC:
- group voting
- the ability to prevent people from creating a landmark on your land

Things they were working on and were only partially finished in 1.23:
- saving open notifications to disk so that they can be respawned (ie you receive a scripted inventory offer, crash, relog, and the inventory offer will show again to let you accept/decline)
- keyword highlighting (which is actually functional in 1.23 but there's no UI to edit/create them but you could make the XML manually)

I guess that's SL viewer 2.0? Somehow I don't believe it. So, I'll ask again.......has anyone run 2.0?

Yes, but they're under NDA.

Group voting never works anyway ... and when someone tries it the vote is usually 'does this work?'.

I never could understand why someone would not allow you to LM a place, especially when you can just bookmark a slurl anyway (even though it would be annoying). The most amusing one was a *store* that did not allow you to LM and their LM giver gave an invalid LM.

Saving open notifications to disk would be handy ... I have received notifications of items being sent to me and crashed before I could accept them.

I use it on my land all the time really.

If it happens to be public access and random people wander around/make themselves at home then not being able to landmark it probably significantly reduces the chance that they'll come back or start handing out landmarks to friends to come join in the big orgy they're throwing when I'm not around.

They can still save a SLurl or remember the name of the sim, but long-term neither of those two are actually convenient so they won't likely be back :).

/me makes a mental note that Kitty's place is set up for big orgies.

Right, I said it was annoying. What I also said is it did not *prevent* anything so it is sort of like an appendix. They can use slurls, write down locations, or use the various tools out there that record where they TPed to (actually, even the linden chat log says where you TPed from).

In the case of the store I mentioned guess what the result was? I never wound up shopping there again. It was not important to me to remember with those various ways and they gave up the chance to give me a free advertisement.

BTW, where do you live anyway that random orgies by strangers on your land are actually a valid concern? Hint: there is a reason that nightly rental above the adult bookstore was so cheep. :)

Most people aren't going to go that length though. And even if they do over time it'll fade away so the chance that they'll keep on returning is rather slim.

It doesn't help with those who want to grief, but it definitely helps with those who just trespass :).

I've lived on the mainland, various private sims and now a detached homestead and it really doesn't seem to ever make any difference as to the amount of people who randomly show up where they're not wanted :p.

Whether it's a lone one roaming around the sim, or a couple cuddling somewhere on the beach, or half a dozen throwing an impromptu party, or people having fun with the bed.

Orgies might be overstating it a little bit :p, but when it comes down to it I don't care what they're doing, particularly after listening to hundreds of different excuses about why they happen to be doing whatever I find them doing (one random guy went on and on about how much he liked the teddy bear on my bed and that he just had to invite his/a girl friend over to come see it... uh huh... ) or all the painfully obvious ones who think that commenting on how lovely it all looks will make the fact that they're somewhere they shouldn't be somehow all right.

I don't really understand this...I was never confused by the viewer when I first logged in. (Maybe because I was 17 when I joined...I just offended a buncha old people didn't I?)

Even at my advanced age I never found it that confusing.

The worst part was strange key combinations for obscure functions. Like the first time I turned on beacons and wasn't sure what I'd done or how to undo it. I eventually figured that part out.

I think they're barking up the wrong tree if they think the UI is the the main issue with new user retention.
