I avoid this problem with one simple rule: SL is SL and RL is RL. I have great friends in SL but that is exactly what they are...SL friends. I respect the fact that the reality is I'm friends with the avatar not the person behind it. Why? Because how can I possibly know the person at the keyboard? Maybe it's a person who has chosen to have an entirely different persona. Not lying but maybe they need that escape. I accept that the 22 year old male from Chicago may actually be a 63 year old woman from Bolivia (obviously an extreme example, but just making a point).

I love my SL friends but I realize that RL always take precedent, therefore I accept that one day I may find that for whatever reason they no longer login. It doesn't mean I keep a distance within our SL friendship, but I'm just always aware.

As for SL romantic relationships, don't get me started on those. I can't think of anything positive to say about them whatsoever and just hope the best for my friends who choose to involve themselves in them.

I thought you were pretty clear, Cherry. I think Squeeze is the one who misunderstood. You said that you have all new names on your friend's list and miss your old friends? Am I correct in that? Because that's what I read, and it really wasn't very hard to understand. I, personally, never got the impression that you are friendless.

Back to the OP. SL is like RL on fast forward. The ones you knew go their own ways or dissappear altogether. Then, about a year later, you bump into one, and its like "Hey, where have you been? Its like since last year that we last talked." Of course, LL has lost their inventory, and they have reverted to the white t-shirt guy or the purple t-shirt girl, but its nice to talk to them anyway.

I will be somewhat tied up this week anyhow and only popping into sl for a few minutes here and there. I spend much more time glued to sl during the winter months, but in summer I pretend like i have a "first life"

Most of my RL/SL mixed friends were already RL in some way or became so very quickly - I am myself on here really and it doesn't matter to me what I tell people or they know (so long as it's not my address if I don't trust them completely ... or my bank details).

I was very against SL relationships when I came here. So was my SL partner. Neither of us were looking for anything at all, it just happened - neither of us are playing anything but what we are as people (the av appearance well you can try to make yourself but they you get the pretty stick out lol). With the relationship, where that goes, well who the hell knows and if it comes unravelled I won't be having another one.
