Is there really much reason to fear an AR (Abuse Report) ?

Many in this previous post expressed concerns that you should not defend yourself against griefers because they might AR you.

ARing doesnt seem to deter many griefers, so I can't help but wonder if many citizens have actually had thier hands slapped for blowing away a griefer.

Given that the Linden's seem highly ineffective at handling or responding to the AR's that I have filed in the past. I imagine the Linden's also recieve a huge number of AR's, for more then thier miniscule staff can possibly deal with, so I can't help but think that they blow off the majority of the AR's they recieve and file them in the trash can. I can't help but wonder if this worry about AR's hasn't become an SL Urban Myth.

If the Linden's and AR'ing were effective, I might be willing to turn the other cheek. But these days If its OK for a land owner to ban, eject and send home a griefer, why shouldn't any other person be able to defend themselves when attacked? Why should I as a land owner, only be able to defend myself when I am on my land? It is my right to defend myself.

There are two places you can be in SL..

Land owned by someone.... The only rights you have there is what the owner allows you to have there.

On land owned by Linden, you have to listen to them.

If you think you would have the right to fight on my land (for whatever reason) your name will be nicely in the list with the few griefers I banned.

(BTW The AR's I filled in, where handled in a proper way)

I've filed a total of 3 abuse reports and as far as I know nothing has been done on any of those three occasions. Most recently someone posted real life info about my real life fiance on their profile (pertaining to a series traumatic events she suffered as a child) - we both AR'd this person, but doubt that anything will be done.

Griefers don't care if they get suspended or even banned. If their goal is griefing, more likely than not they don't have any Inventory beyond freebie or very cheap items and their name is just an entry into the game. Plus, they'll have no qualms about finding any way to create a new free account since, again, they don't care if they're found out and banned. They just move on to some other game where they can have their fun.

I, on the other hand, would really mind if I were suspended or banned from SL. I have a significant inventory of items that would be lost, not to mention land. And my name is tied to the products I sell and the friends I've made, so simply logging back in with a new account would not restore the life I've painstakingly built.

So the risk for me to engage in an AR offense is considerably higher than it is for a noob griefer who thinks SL is a lame place without enough explosions and ways to kill people.

If I'm a land owner, I have the ability to deal with griefers. If I'm NOT the land owner, then I simply leave. Whatever I'm doing can probably be done elsewhere or done later. It's not worth getting riled up about, but I can always AR the griefer to the landowner by supplying name and misbehavior. Eventually, if the landowner cares, they can ban the goober. If not, find another place to hang out, with a landowner who is more actively involved in maintaining an inviting place.

Assume that a troublemaker disturbs you one hundred times.

You respond by doing something against the rules to "defend yourself" and not filing an abuse report.

Each time you break the rules, the troublemaker files an abuse report against you.

Now let's suppose that you and the troublemaker both get AR'ed by other people, for offenses of equivalent seriousness.

The abuse staffperson sees that the troublemaker has a clean record and gives them a warning or does nothing.

With your lengthy record of misbehavior, sterner measures seem called for, so you get a suspension for a week, and get kicked out of the mentor group for being a chronic troublemaker.

I think it's kind of like that, and like unpaid parking tickets, some folks get away with it and others don't.

Still waiting to hear the story of someone whos been suspended or even reprimanded for blowing away a griefer on somebody elses land. LL is sifting through a zillion AR reports, looking for things that really need to be addressed. The guy who orbits a griefer isnt going to be looked at twice. Its not worth the time to slap you on the wrist even if they felt it was warrented. As far as fearing an AR for other reasons, depends on what your doing that is reportable. Whats the worst that could happen? You get IP banned? Go play WoW, its more exciting. LL is never going to come to your house and beat up your mom or shoot your dog (execution style). Your risk factor is only as high as you value your ability to play this game. If you dont care if you ever log in again, do what you want.
If you enjoy hanging out in SL, then dont mess with your fellow gamers. Simple.

I guess the question is: Were you spamming?
If you were, then your banning was just fine.

Regardless of whether others break the rules, regardless of whether they get punished, the Lindens are obviously doing their job, as we know that SOMEONE got banned for breaking the rules. You.

What you're complaining about is that you're pissed that you got punished for doing something wrong and others didn't, then decrying LL for it. They're doing their job. Banning people for breaking the rules.

You're just pissed that it's you.

We had this conversation before, regarding some shmuck pissed at being banned for having a Nazi flag. You were bitching and complaining about the exact same thing.

A definition of insanity is: Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.

If you are a good upstanding SL resident - of course you need to fear AR's

If you Extrapolate Murphy's law youll know only the good people get cuaght by the occasional AR that results in them being locked up with the key auto returned to lost and found on some closed account.

While true griefers require many many Ar's before their wrist slap.

And if we all start shooting back, it makes us as bad, and could turn SL into another counter strike. Sl has so much more potential then that too... ;/ The fact is if Linden Lab intended for us to do this, i think all the newbie avatars would be able to pick a weapon upon creation. The Goth avs would come with rusty spike daggers, furry would have razer claws, and i don't want to imagine what the city chick would have.

But wait? furry users are too cute to fight back? :p .But really many of us are fighting back since LLabs is failing to take care of such abuses. As You said we don`t want SL to turn in to a a First Shooter gaeme. Where the name of the name is to attack anyone and everyone.....

People who get temporary bans from the world are perma-banned from forums, so you won't hear much. :)

Reality check

Are you going to get problems due to AR by a griefer if you attack them?

One instance - NO
Many instances, over time -YES - it's a cumulative thing.

Do it on another's land and you may be doubling the load of AR's you get.
If I find people fighting for real on my estate they get ejected, banned and AR'ed.
I haven't got the time or inclination to figure out who's 'right' and who's 'wrong', and why should I bother, or care? It's my land, and you are the problem.
You could get two AR's, for one action there - one from me, one from the griefer.

Don't make the mistake of 'knowing' that LL realise who the griefer really is, or care either... They work like I do.

Wow.

That is stupid.

Have always felt their banning people from the world if they get banned ont he forums is stupid.

But permently banning them for a temporary in world ban? why does that make sense?

If they want to combine access then if you can get in world , you should be able to go to teh forums.

Ive known people who got temp bans for some very mino infractions - such as a nipple showing on their profile picture (thats a pretty small cluster of pixels when its the 2nd life pic lol)

So she is permently banned from the forums , for a nipple.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that is true. I'm betting it will be a temporary ban from the forums if you are temporarily banned from being in world. ......or at least that would make sense.....

i was once suspended for 17 days for building a 1200 prim wall of 10x10 flexi cubes on my own land (1/3 sim mainland) in protest of the camping casino that was built up on my border.

needless to say that was 7 months ago, i have since moved to a private sim and i realized from that experience, LL doesn't seem to have a steady policy in place, it all seems to come down to who is taking care of the problem in front of them...

Gaybot it seems you might be correct - Since if Athena was temporaily banned for 17 days - and temp in game bans are permanent forums bans; then how did Athena post?

Well shoot a griefer on my land and you earn a beer :)
And ban me for defending my self and my personal space fine, I probably would never want to know you again or visit your land anyway and ban you from my lands too :P

Also -

Why does building a flexi wall on your own land earn someone a 17 day ban?

Intentional Lag creation? disturbing the "veiw"? seems like you should be able to make a flexi wall if you want to.

I was wondering that too. What is the prim allowance for 1/3 of a sim? If it crashed the sim and was viewed as intentional, that can get you in big trouble.

This comes from the Community Standards:

Disturbing the Peace
Every Resident has a right to live their Second Life. Disrupting scheduled events, repeated transmission of undesired advertising content, the use of repetitive sounds, following or self-spawning items, or other objects that intentionally slow server performance or inhibit another Resident's ability to enjoy Second Life are examples of Disturbing the Peace.

Global Attacks
Objects, scripts, or actions which broadly interfere with or disrupt the Second Life community, the Second Life servers or other systems related to Second Life will not be tolerated in any form. We will hold you responsible for any actions you take, or that are taken by objects or scripts that belong to you. Sandboxes are available for testing objects and scripts that have components that may be unmanageable or whose behavior you may not be able to predict. If you chose to use a script that substantially disrupts the operation of Second Life, disciplinary actions will result in a minimum two-week suspension, the possible loss of in-world inventory, and a review of your account for probable expulsion from Second Life.

Were there prim limits 7 months ago? I'm not that old, lol.
