What is kind of funny, is that Ben Brown, the fellow who started this thread, never came back again. Starting this thread was his very first and very last post. He has not replied to any comments made by anyone. I suspect he has not gone back to Second Life either, and he possibly never will (He's probably playing WoW, right now).

I'm put in mind of a gamer geek who's just been invited to a party and can't quite grasp the concept of what to do when people gather in one place without rolling dice and consulting rulebooks.

now there you go. thanks for the idea. i will work on something i thot of a long time ago, and forgot all about. :D

okay, so let's say i make this "place". i think i'll need to buy more land to make it work. no prob, some is for sale by me. but... if the only thing you had to pay for was entry into my "puzzle"... would you pay it?

if so, how much? i mean, i gotta get my tier money income somehow.

I went and played around with caesar IV and I think i have the idea of the game all wrong because I build this city up this huge city and then purposelly loose favoure with rome so i can watch the little armies come and burn it down..

(this is why i make a very bad team mate in these group games .... that and tree hugging)

But a perfect partner for my game Make Things Go Boom! Current mission: running speedboats across sim borders at full throttle in an attempt to splode them and hurtle avs into space or the center of the earth. :D

okay. i'm bored. i need a purpose.

i have a little boring store, and a little boring house on my 1536 that i almost sold a few weeks ago.

it i "L" shaped, and not near water.

if i could dump it all, and use my prims on some sort of thing that would be cool for everyone to enjoy, just cuz it's there and just cuz i can, wut would you want me to turn it in to?

a garden is nice, but there are tons of them. so.... wut can i make that will please you, my peoples?

When I had mere L shaped 1536m2 lot I made huge 300 foot egg tower with waterfalls. Was impossible to join but hollowing and placing eggs was fun.

Your first quest is to hunt down and kill all the red lectroids from Planet 10.

Just be careful to ONLY kill the ones named John.

I'm trying to get a handle on what this game is all about... and failing. I play World of Warcraft and it's pretty obvious what I should do next with the quests and all. But when I log into Second Life for the first time, what should I do first? Where should I go? How does one know how to do anything?

Ben if you just stick around for a few months you will either have become as crazilly addicted as everyone else here or you will have retreated to the Home for the Bewildered.

Either way, it won't matter to you anymore.

Good luck - feel free to IM me if you need any help. :)

Just a suggestion...Read down the threads on this forum and find the one "Enjoy Boating in SL?" - then go and pay Ava a visit and see how you like things :) Enjoy!

In order to complete each sim, you have to defeat the end of level guardian. They can be easily identified by the surname "linden" in their title.

She with the most bears wins.

First, drive the word "Game" from your mind.
SL is already much more than that, if one wants it to be.
Next, learn the basics and explore.
After exploring for long enough, the following words may reveal to you what could be on the (hopefully-not-too-distant-future) horizon, if LL can hold this baby together:

Amazon.com Island
Google Island
Warcraft (or similar) Island
Wiki Island
Myspace Island
Yahoo Island
Ebay Island
Fox Island
CBS Island
Matchmakers Island
Paramount Island
Youtube Island
Microsoft Island
Dell Island

THE possible internet hub of the future: SL (but first they must work RL$ in in a manner
pleasing to FoxGooglePfizer et alia).

This will lead to an exodus of people.

A very informative post, a nice listing of all the corporate Sims I will avoid. Thank You.

of course if they got to that point they might not CARE if theres an exodus, since they will be "Teh 3d web"

Those of us who like SL for what it is (and was) will just not like the change to RL commercialism.

Some people like their virtual world ... virtual.

That's just it- you can avoid them if you don't like them, if LL does it well. As I see it, Sl can easily encompass both the fantasy and the business, putting the business Islands far separate from the generally individual properties.

Something for everyone... with the business end helping to keep fees on the play end low.

Personally I would love to browse an Amazon.com Island and be able to order RL products there, or go to a CartoonNetwork Island to see episodes of shows I've missed :)

Added: Business is already here, obviously, with places like the Illusion Factory etc.

You are correct, IF they can keep them to their side of the world. however most of those companies have a way of taking over the world where you can't avoid them, and dictating policy to all by virtue of their fat wallets. Seeing how they have infested RL, I'm not expecting much of a difference in SL, call me a pessimist.

You are right... massive piles of money can warp things. Hopefully LL will be listening to the people like you and others who helped them survive this long, and will maintain separation of business and play as much as possible. Individual creations in play should really be protected from being overwhelmed by corporate biz $$$$. It is possible LL could even build a totally separate program/server system for the RL businesses side ... that may be the way they should go.

Hhmm. Fantasy Island, anyone?

(Seriously. Fantasy islands, if necessary with anti-corporate banlines, if that's your thing.)

None of you can. A lot of you have built up successful businesses here, maybe not getting rich, but turning some profit. You are doing here what you can't do very well in RL anymore unfortunately. And now the very same entities that have monopolized RL, are coming into SL, and could quite possibly push all the small businesses out of here as well. And second life becomes nothing but another mass media outlet for their incessant advertising. I'm happy just to go to amazon.com if I want something. I don't need Amazon Island. But that's just me.
