I'm trying to get a handle on what this game is all about... and failing. I play World of Warcraft and it's pretty obvious what I should do next with the quests and all. But when I log into Second Life for the first time, what should I do first? Where should I go? How does one know how to do anything?

How does one know how to do anything? The tutorials in the various sections of this forum are a good starting point. You need to experiment. SL does not hand you things pre baked on a plate the way WoW does. Basically it is not a game. It is a virtual world. There is a big difference. |

The problem is: it's not really a game. There's no goal. And basically, there's nothing to do. Nothing that you would need to do, that is. You're free to do whatever you want
![]() You can also visit a game sim within the virtual world of SL. SL itself is no game, but people create games here. There are combat sims and roleplay sims with various SF or fantasy themes. |

In order to complete each sim, you have to defeat the end of level guardian. They can be easily identified by the surname "linden" in their title. _____________________

in a nutshell ... SL is many things to many many people...
Some use it as a social meeting place ... others a business..... others a sex site ... oterhs a gambling site .... Some use it to explore thier creativness, The most common misconception in SL is that you can make "loads of dosh" in here with no skills. I suggest that you take a fly around, go looking for builds that are nice open up search and look for something that interests you, look in groups if there are groups with similar interests. All you need to remember is that SL is a blank sheet of papaer and you certainly will only get out of it what you want to put in. Feel free to IM me in world *s* Marty _____________________

Depends on what you want to do. Build? Start someplace like the Ivory Tower of Prims or the Particle Lab. Socialize? Search Groups or Events for something that interests you...and you'll probably also want to shop a bit and get rid of the 'newbie' look. Again, Search is (sort of) your friend. Explore? Open the map, click someplace and go. Or try a site like this for ideas: http://secondtourist.blogspot.com/
And so on and so forth... _____________________

In order to complete each sim, you have to defeat the end of level guardian. They can be easily identified by the surname "linden" in their title. With Philip as the mid-boss and Torley as the final boss! Might I suggest a few places to get you started in understanding the social environment that is Second Life? The first is a place called the Shelter. They have some great people there who can help you understand the world and what it's limits are. Next, since you are from WoW, may I suggest exploring the area called the Isle of Wyrms? It's a beautiful place and there be dragons! There are some role play groups there, one of which I think is based on the Pern series. Also, run the word Freebies through the search/places feature and visit a few of them to get you started on the road to the most chaotic inventory you will have ever dealt with. There is no limit to it's size and no rhyme or reason to it's layout. Welcome to Second Life! _____________________

Oh that is just the best line today. ![]() To the OP...the key word is Second Life is LIFE. Just as in the RL game, you set your own goals and strive toward them. _____________________

If you are looking for "phat lewt" (I think that is the term these kids use now days.), search for the GIANT GOLDEN PRIM PENIS. New players have been questing for that for 4 years now.

But when I log into Second Life for the first time, what should I do first? Where should I go? How does one know how to do anything? The first thing to now: Second Life is not, per se, a game - at least in one key area in your case. It has no "end goal," no "winning conditions" and such. You will find games within second life (Neo-Realms fishing, for one), but Second Life itself is, for all intents an purtposes, more of a playform than game. That said: Start with Orientation Island and complete the thigns it provides there. After that, do whatcha wanna. If you want WOW type stuff, there are fantasy-based sims out there. Or dfind soem of the other RP sims (Midian City, etc.). Go exploring or sightseeing. meet other avatars and get to know them. Learn content creation and make a few Lindens for your pocketbook, and so on. Mari _____________________

Stop trying to confuse the poor chap. Everyone knows you can level in SL by defeating Lindens. The tough part is getting Torley, as she can summon guardians with max HP with the "Group IM" power. None of them drop any good loot either - you just get something called a "bear", and it doesn't seem to do anything when you equip it. _____________________

I played WoW, and still maintain my account there, though I hardly even visit any more, and then just to say hello to old friends. The difference is, WoW is a game, and a great game. SL is a world. Do what you want with it. But first, find out what is in it. For one thing, things get a LOT steamier than the female night elf dance, assuming that is your thing, as how could it not be, and hoping you are the same,
