Didn't see a good place to put this, so I'll make it a question: Would you like to go boating on the open ocean?

I have finally completed my free public facility, the Nautilus Harbor Public Boat Launch. Nautilus Harbor is a place where anyone can launch a boat and sail the wide open seas of the new Nautilus continent -- about 8-10 regions of it! You are also welcome to sit in the clubhouse, watch the sunset, and enjoy a nice conversation.

I usually have about 100-130 prims available, so you should be able to launch small and medium sized boats. Larger boats will also work as long as they aren't too prim-heavy, but I'm afraid mega-yacht owners are out of luck. :p

There is a box of freebie boats for the boatless, as well as a box with a free copy of the floating dock and clubhouse I built.

Visit Nautilus Harbor in the southwest corner of Salerio:
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Salerio/26/26/21/

Enjoy! :D

Ooer, this looks cool :D Actually, we just got some beachfront ourselves, and I was thinking about getting one of those really cool sailboats to use, because we live near protected Linden water. They look like fun, and I had a friend that had one and said they were actually rather challenging to use. Just yet another place to use it at!

Great idea and nice thing to do for the community. Can I launch my hangglider from there too? You should post this to Second Citizen too. :)

Yeah, I've been looking at the sailboats, but they are so realistic that you really need to know what you're doing. For now I'm sticking with the motorboats. Just wish my computer was fast enough to keep up with them!

OMG, that is so funny that you mentioned hanggliders. I'm seriously considering getting one of the party hangglider launchers from WaveLabs and putting it way up high on a sky platform... just gotta check to see what the prim count would be. The nice thing about the party ones is that they rez automatically for people (up to 50 at a time), and disappear automatically when you dismount... which is really nice for people like me whose dismount usually consists of crashing through a sim border and ending up 10,000 m underground! :D

So anyway, yes, go for it and launch anything that suits your fancy. And I'll look into getting an account on SC so I can announce there too. :)

the hanggliders are low prim, i think and have some of the nicest physics I have come across in a vehicle. Very realistic and lovely to fly, at least in low lag areas. Party on!
Also there is a great freebie sailboat that I know of. A guy named grizzly dawson created it as well as a spiffy airboat. I will send you a landmark when I am inworld tomorrow.

Now offering free hanggliding! :D

Fly up to 130m and you will find a sky launch with a hangglider rezzer. As Ray says, they are a delight to fly. When you dismount, the hangglider disappears in a few seconds, so no clean up!

This does knock the free prims down to 109 (I think it was 130 before). If you need that extra 20 prims to launch your boat, let me know and I'll turn off the hangglider for a day or so. :)

Ava this is wonderful :) Although I now live in one of the new sims on the ocean, I go windsurfing and often crash into red ban lines and find myself in the sea floor. Can I windsurf at your place as well?

Many thanks

Yes, absolutely! :D

In fact, you can launch just about anything as long as it's doesn't go over the prim allotment. If you wanted, you could even rez a car on the sea floor, and go racing all around underwater (assuming cars work underwater). And though I haven't tried, I expect small planes can be launched from both the water and the sky platform.

A special note for surfers and windsurfers: There is a platform about 1.5m under the water on the west side of the clubhouse. You can jump down onto that if you have one of the boards that requires you to get about waist deep in water before you can get up to surf.

Hi Ava

Just what I need, the one I was waiting for.

Can we have a chat in-world one day? We are planning to build a huge marina, an identical replica of Puerto Banus in Spain. We could do with some experience can we pick your brains, or there might even be a possibility of working togehter. PLease look one or all of us up (all involved one way or the other):

Looking forward to see you if you don't mind ...

This is cool. I've got my own waterfront but would definitely be game to check the place out and do a little sailing!

Sounds terriffic. Is it OK if I bring my airship over? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a good sailboat?

Thanks. Love Suzi.

Cool! I love to Kayak (I use mine Livingtree so much, that I have it permanetely parked by the fishing shack). Will it be okay if Child Avatars such as myself use this facility?

Just as long as you wait one hour after eating before you go into the water.

ROFL. Once again, BC busts my gut.

I will come check this out...

Do the boats obey the physics of sailing? Do they heel in string wind. Do yo have to tack upwind? Do different boats have different characteristics?

Lee,
Yes most SL sailboats react realistically (well, at least my Trudeau 32 gaff-rigged sloop does); i.e. heeling, the stronger the wind the greater the heel, can't sail directly into the wind, etc.

Sailing in SL can be very challenging because of the constantly shifting wind direction and strength so you'll do a lot of tacking and changing the set of your sails (some boats like my Trudeau have an option to make the wind direction constant).

As someone who does some sailing RL I think the physics are actually pretty good. I just hate it when I hit a ban-line and end up on the ocean floor

Thanks for the great feedback, everybody! I'm glad that everyone likes the idea as much as I do. Like others, I also owned waterfront, only to find myself either blocked or seriously hindered by ban lines and no entry parcels. For this reason, I specifically hunted for something directly on a protected ocean, something that I could share with others who enjoy sailing the open sea.

Unfortunately LL is not marking a lot of open ocean sims as protected these days, even though they end up remaining in Gov Linden's hands. The Linden ocean sims bordering Nautilus Harbor are similarly unprotected, but it looks like they will be staying open. And if not? Well, we will enjoy them while we can! :D

That sounds great, Wolfgang. I'm at work and can be very forgetful, so please IM me inworld so I remember to contact you. I do have to admit my building skills are very primitive, but I can definitely share my solutions for various boat launching technical problems.

Rats, and here I am stuck at work until 6 or 7 pm SL time. We'll definitely have to plan for a Forum Cartel party some weekend!

Is the Huey one of those old military helicopters? If so, I gotta put that on my list of stuff to buy.

Absolutely! Anything that can be launched with the 109 prims currently available is okay by me. :)

Wow, I used to kayak in RL and yet somehow have completely neglected to get one here in SL. Now I definitely MUST have one! Can you tell me about yours?

Absolutely Mari! Salerio is a PG sim, and though I can't guarantee my neighbors' good behavior, Nautilus Harbor is meant to be child-safe.

There's no lifeguard on duty, though, so I guess we're lucky we can breathe underwater! ;)

Thanks Raymond. I've never sailed in RL, so I have a feeling I'm going to end up spinning in circles or just sitting in dead water... and yet still having a blast!

----

Another question: Does anyone see a real need for MORE prims (than the current 100-ish) for launching things? My neighbor informed me he plans to sell his place in a month or two, and I might be able to convince him to carve out the 1024 next to me to give the harbor another 200-something prims. It will cost me another $8/mo in tier, which isn't a problem if those prims have a use.

One thing I was considering was putting up more "party" vehicles, like the hanggliders I just installed. These are something that sit waiting for guests to take them out. When a guest takes one, a new one is rezzed for the next guest. And when people are done with the vehicle, it just disappears. WaveLabs (where I got the hangglider party) also has surfboards, waverunners, kiteboards, and I think windsurfing boards all in party form. I have also seen a little tiny putt-putt motor boat that is nice for cruising around slowly.

I can't have all of these now because there wouldn't be any prims left for people to launch their own boats (or other vehicles), but with the extra 234 prims I think Nautilus Harbor could be an excellent free entertainment center. :)
