Well I wrote down the OP's name and will IM in game to see if I can be a beta tester. :) My curiosity is way up and instead of speculating on what the "job" might entail or require I figure I'll find out for myself. Besides, if it's something I can do to get a little more linden bucks to pay for uploads or maybe a new skin (as if I need another...LOL) I'm game.

But, it's a week before the tax man comes in RL so I need to do my taxes first. :(

But I'm sure you could justify stabbing people in the eye with a pencil if you really wanted to.

If I'm stabbing a pencil in your eye, you have a pencil in an eye, and I have a pencil in an eye, so that's totally equal, isn't it? *grins*

Ah, that reminds me of my IRC days. I wrote an Eliza-style chatterbot, and left it in a sex channel. One poor fool spent 2 hours trying to seduce my bot. I think he failed his Turing test.

Oh this is too funny!

Please don't cut the important part of my statement! It is about taking advantage, but it can be that both parties take advantage, and then it's ok in my eyes.

How do you define "equally"?

"Taking advantage" implies inequality.

I'm no native English speaker, so blame that on my English skills.

In any case: What is "equality" here?

I don't think you really want to know. You're just bumping your damn thread now! :)

You're going to take advantage of people regardless of what people like me say. So it's pointless to argue over what is right or wrong.

I certainly couldn't say anything about your idea one way or another until I know more about it. Is it anything like Amazon's Mechanical Turk? I'm sure there's room for many little things that provide micro-payments for easy tasks.

I chatted with him online, apparently all you have to do is chat to the "machine" every 30 seconds or so.

What could it be?

Beats me...

Let us not go off half-cocked, here. I don't think we have enough information to make pronouncements. If this is not a scam and is just a micropayment job, I think if no one will work for X the wages will go up to Y.

When I comes to employment in both a real world and a virtual (or pretend) world everyone takes advantage of everyone else. :) My RL employer takes advantage of me every single day I work............he takes my skills and uses them to his advantage to make money for his company. And I take advantage of him by taking my wages from the money he makes by taking advantage of me each week to use as I please in my personal life. It's a trade off everyone uses to each's advantage. A mutually aggreed on system of using each other to our respective advantage. Not necessarily a bad thing. :) Only when there is an imbalance on one side or the other does the "unfairness" or negative sense of the word "advantage" take on a bad meaning.

Person A: "But I'm sure you could justify stabbing people in the eye with a pencil if you really wanted to."

Person B: " If you need a beta tester feel free to message me "

Love that sequence of statements.

He says this is work taht is of RL commercial value, and yet he is offering to pay 120 lindens per hour.

Low level work of RL commercial value pays the equivalent of about 3600 lindens per hour.

To be sure, even 120 ph is more than what camping chairs pay these days. But camping chairs do not require any interactivity on the part of the camper - they don't even need to be physically at their computer. Most campers these days either use a bot or leave the machine running oernight or while at their RL work.

I'm led to believe this "job" will require the employee to be active at their machine and using real human time as opposed to machine time. For that, 120 lindens an hour is a joke. That's even less than the average wage in Burkina Faso.

I spend hours "working" with my GIMP imaging software making some texture I want for my house or some goofy outfit I think I can make to wear in world. Pay the $L10 to upload and someone (usually a friend) comes along and sees it..........sort of likes it and I give it to them. For free............I could have asked for the upload fee at the least, but I didn't even think about it.

Guess what I'm saying is that a lot of people are like me. They are not in the game (world for you purists) to make money (lindens or real life currency).......just for the fun of playing here. If there was a "job" that did not require me to devote more time than I feel I can give at the moment AND I could "earn" a few lindens for playing in SL then I would certainly consider it. I don't camp because it's boring and I think it's really stupid to leave your computer connected to the internet while I go off and do real life things so my avi can "earn" me some lindens just sitting or dancing unattended. Besides the fact that I hate when people do that and take up server space possibly preventing someone else from coming to a sim to really "live" their Second Life.

If it is a useful "job" that is not overly boring and I have a few moments to devote, then it's possibly something I would do..........and take the 120 lindens an hour and be happy. Not bad pay for an imaginary world. :)

It all comes down to the fact that SL is a game to many young people and work in SL isn't considered real work.

Yes it is. If that is not enough for you then why post so much.

You could of earnt a few lindens for the amount of effort you just put into riduculing this guys idea but instead you got zero.

Good on him for bringing a way to earn lindens to the world. I probably wont participate but you never know, maybe one day ill need a quick 10 lindens to buy something i want and this would be the perfect way to get it.

Hildofur, are you going to allow landowners to put this machine on their land and earn a commision?
If so, count me in!!!

Alternatively, I could have done five seconds of overtime at my real world job and earned the same amount of money

I have camped for 12l a hour.
I would probably do surveys for 120l a hour if there wasn't way to harvest personal information, require me to purchase a service like netflicks or require my credit card or email address.

Yes, I thought so. But for shop owners, the real profit is not in the commission. Most people using the machine will spend the money for items at the shop. It is not built for generating a full daytime job, though nothing prevents you from doing so, but for offering a way to quickly generate a few lindens when in need.

Then you're welcome! The only information I am logging at the server is the avatar name and uuid, to ban people who abuse the service. No need to buy anything, open a web browser or give away personal information.

I think people would do this (whatever it is) for 120L an hour in pieces here and there.

It's not RL wages, no, but whoever volunteers will soon find out whether it involves a great deal of effort, or doesn't distract too much from them IMing friends or watching House on telly or whatever.

If you make a success (RL) out of it, I'll look forward to the Wired magazine article about your spiffy cyber-entrepeneurism :D

We found a system that allows free copying, but prevents modifying.

You can give a copy to everyone who wishes to use the machine on his land, then request a license via calling "request license" from the radial menu as an owner. We'll then visit the position of the machine to look if the place is ok, and grant a license to that location and owner. We have taken necessary steps to prevent usage of our machines for denial of service attacks on our servers, so there's no point in spawning them everywhere... :-) Your uuid would get added to our firewall within a couple of seconds and the machine stops working immediately if it notices it is blocked.

Basically that means everybody who wishes may put it up next to his shop/casino/whatever within the next days, when testing is finished...
