Hi all!
I wonder what you would consider an acceptable salary for earning money in second life. I am building a machine that allows to do first life work via second life. In fact, it's work one can do only from inside second life, but will be payed with outside money since it is a valuable service there.
The machine does not require starting a web browser, does not collect privacy information, is fully in-game and you can start or quit using it every 15 seconds, and immediately get the money transferred to your account.
I thought about paying 1 L$ for 30 seconds, which means 120 L$ an hour.
Is that ok?
Best regards Gregor

How about 3600 L$ an hour? That's about the low end for basic office/clerical work in most modern countries, or so I am led to believe. I am of course assuming that since this is work that is of RL value, then the salarymaster should be willing to pay RL wages.

I don't really understand what it is that you will be asking people to do.
Can you explain further?

I would take a job for 120L an hour as I'm unskilled in scripting and 3d modelling.

I suppose it depends on what the 'job' is. If it doesn't take any skill, then there will be plenty willing to do it for that that money instead of sitting on camping chairs etc. If it takes a skill to do it, then the earnings would have to be suffient to attract the more skilled members.

From: 2k Suisei It's a cyber sex machine. Ah, that reminds me of my IRC days. I wrote an Eliza-style chatterbot, and left it in a sex channel. One poor fool spent 2 hours trying to seduce my bot. I think he failed his Turing test.

It's not related to sex in any way, there are no moral implications, or any fraud involved... It's a job everybody can do, it's completely in-game. Something similar to the surveys you can do for market research and get paid for, only it does not force you to interrupt your gaming experience by opening a web browser, and it pays much better than money trees or those unbelievable money chairs... I'll get that online soon, and you'll see I was only interested in the hourly rate that people would like to do in-game work for.

I think he failed his Turing test. I had many bot's on Efnet and Undernet IRC that were 'eliza' style and after about 10 or 15 messages it would ask the person chattin with it to call the 1900 number that i made 10% of sales off of, was a nice extra 300 to 500 a month for a few years.....

Exploitation? From: Hildolfur McMillan ...or those unbelievable money chairs...
Those "unbelievable" chairs are effortless. You don't get paid much. But you also don't do much. Still, I don't want to give you an hard time. I just have to hope that people will realize for themselves that they are being taken advantage of. It all comes down to the fact that SL is a game to many young people and work in SL isn't considered real work. I'm just dreading the day when McDonalds realize this and wire SL avatars up to robots in their real world burger joints. Perhaps I worry too much.

It all comes down to the fact that SL is a game to many young people and work in SL isn't considered real work. I don't feel guilty. It's a job that doesn't work from the internet or the real world, as it only works with many identifiable people doing it once in a while, and you could never ever pay that many people in the first life. So it does not transfer existing employments to low-cost second life citizens. Many people in second life are desperately searching for a way to earn money in second life, and look for money trees or these chairs because there is nothing better at hand. Making money is - after all - always about taking advantage. Users profit from the machine, as they get better payment than before, I profit from having discovered a new business. If both parties have an advantage, I don't see anything evil doing it... The prototype is working, I am fixing bugs now and do beta tests. I think it'll go public within the next two weeks.

It's about providing a service. It's a trade. Both parties are supposed to benefit equally. But I'm sure you could justify stabbing people in the eye with a pencil if you really wanted to.

I think it's ok to do so. It's a game. It's a virtual world. I totally understand that people don't want to spend money, but are willing to work in-game instead of taking "real money" for the game. Time is valuable as well, but it is a different feeling to sacrifice time than to sacrifice money. Most people will have good reasons why they think working in-game is better than paying 10$, it's a different experience. My machine might raise low-end wages in Second Life. Who would be willing to camp for 50 L$ if he could as well get 120 L$ or more? This might have a positive impact on second life. From: someone From: someone Making money is - after all - always about taking advantage.
It's about providing a service. It's a trade. Both parties are supposed to benefit equally. Please don't cut the important part of my statement! It is about taking advantage, but it can be that both parties take advantage, and then it's ok in my eyes. How do you define "equally"?
