From: Gina Jacks Next, I will be building and selling, there is no way I am going to spend over a 100K to get everything back (if it doesn't turn up).
Hi Gina, try clearing your cache (edit-preferences-network-clear cache button) then relog. Sometimes that helps. And sometimes stuff just reappears without any apparent reason. Sl is really wonky lately. One thing I have noticed, my friends who have large inventories (over 20,000 items) tend to lose inventory. Try keeping your inventory under 10,000. I've noticed this seem to be working for me. I purge alot. You'd be surprised how many landmarks, textures, old skins and clothes you never use. It takes a few hours but getting rid of old stuff pays off.

Last night I wanted to pull out a copy of half my house to work on some changes and it was missing. Luckily I was able to take a copy of it that was rezzed but it got me thinking. If I box up a bunch of things I really don't want to lose as has been suggested many times elsewhere, when it disappears from my inventory, will it also disappear from the prims I've stored the copies in?

To comfort you, I haven't heard of them disappearing from within the prim, but... you risk losing them all in one fell swoop if that prim goes *poof*. I prefer to keep my inventory low numbered and work from there.

keep your archive boxes rezzed somewhere, like in a big footlocker on your parcel. From: Gina Jacks Thanks, I have done all that, and actually the SIM is pretty empty. I am going to try somewhere else and see what happen, this is biggest nightmare I ever had so far. Thanks for the advice - will keep updated. Did you keep the boxes from the products you bought? Can you remember them all and where you purchased them? Perhaps contacting the businesses where you got them may get you a replacement especially if they can look back and see that you purchased it. I lost both my shapes I have had since a newbie out of my inventory I mean they are there but they dont work when I click on them instead I get a message " body part not found" and I cant create clothes in appearance anymore it doenst function... so I understand ... in case they dont return start contacting the owners. Many wil give you a new one. Elinah

From: Gina Jacks That's not right, I can see the folder on the beta grid, but I logged back on the "normal" SL version and it's not there. Yeah both my lost shapes are still in beta that is how I recreated it in sl and the ability to create clothes is still in beta too. Elinah

Thanks for the great support, much appreciated. I logged back on the beta grid to see if the folder was still there and also rezzed + made a movie of the build that took me over three months, as a souvenir... so, now what, we have to back up our whole inventory so we can sleep ok?. 7500 + items inside a prim?
Someone told to me that I could request what is called a "roll-back", so I went a ahead saw the link, but the link tells you to open a ticket, nothing else... I opened a 2nd one.
Apart from that, yes, I have tried everything, clear cache etc... the problem with the back up is that it was a huge folder, I didn't know that things like these could happen here in SL, the inventory had around 7500 items, it was quite clean and very tidy.
The good/sad part is that I did make 2 movies on the beta grid and saw everything that was inside the folder, I don't think the creators are going to replace this kind of stuff, as it is transfer only and very popular. Also, I do not want to approach them and tell them what happened, I won't do that. I think that it's SL responsibility and note the poor hardworking creators'. After all, why would they believe me? Not trying to be funny, but it's true, anyone could make up a story like that. So, really, LL people should/could go on the beta grid and they would see that the folder is still there, and that it was there just before their downtime (well done with their downtime... one more screw up). New feature... you know... new features... things we don't need - and how about just limit themselves for a while to fix things that don't work, as oppose as bring more screws...
This is big a lesson I learnt, and a very expensive one, at least I think that: Linden Lab should provide a way for us to back up efficiently our inventory, create something that work for everyone, instead of bringing more screwy updates... I'd rather be happy without it. By the look + feel of it, this folder is not going to come back unless LL take care of it, I have seen coming slowly, but nothing like that.
Once again, thanks to everyone who posted, it's good to know that there are people out there sharing their concern, and at the same time you might want to watch out for yourself.

Rollbacks are only for sims, not for inventory . From: someone Linden Lab should provide a way for us to back up efficiently our inventory LL will only entertain the idea of backing up full permission items. Content creators would turn purple and throw massive fits if LL added backing up inventory because it would leave the door open for people to use it maliciously and duplicate items, rather than just restore what was lost.

my solution for my customers is simple: 1) everything I sell is no transfer (except unique artworks, but I'm gonna change that) 2) I keep an excel documents mith all my customers and what they bought 3) I have the products I sell in my inventory, a copy in the vendors, and some copies in "hidden" boxes in differents parcels 4) If one of my customer lost one of my product, he asks and gets another one Very unlucky if all the copies of a product vnish edit: of course, in this case, i'm not very usefull /don’t want pretty skies // want decent support /// want stable platform //// don’t care about who made a sculptie

From: Mo Dryke If one of my customer lost one of my product, he asks and gets another one Same here. I have a stated store policy of replacement of any item (all of which are no-transfer) for any reason, even just user error. It may not be required for a seller to compensate buyers for asset server issues, but I consider it a customer service that costs me nothing but a few minutes of time.

At the "then they say it's not real money" comment, I have to ruefully laugh and shake my head.
In my old career, we'd get paid pretty crappy and when we asked for a raise, we'd be told "But you'll get a bonus, that added to your current salary is actually like a raise". If we complained about our bonus being too small based on our year's accomplishments, we'd be told "It's a gift. It's not something we HAVE to give you".
LOL Lord help me and please keep gun control laws as-is
Amen

Right, so "roll-back" is out of the way I read - fine. Thanks for telling me that, I won't be waiting for their reply, as I mentioned it happened once before and they ignored me.
As far as reinstalling the software, with OSX you just have to drag and drop the SL icon/folder, so it won't do any magic I suppose, and the missing stuff in on their server - not on my machine.
What I saw from my eyes before this happened, and as one of you have experienced as well, things started to move to different folders. I picked up a tree, it went to the lost and found folder! This never happened before, then I saw other contents moving around as well...
LLs are very busy atm, counting their money + working hard on releasing new SIMs - to make even more money..., and stopping the first land for Premium accounts, yet - they still releasing new SIMs unbelievable the amount of cash they are making... My loss is the last of their worry. After all, it's a virtual loss - it never existed!
We need a UNION and a proper one, and explain to these guys: we give - you take, but please give back when you should and don't break the deal by being inefficient at fixing ARs. The excuse of stopping first land because of Bots and/or people making big profit, only suit them - right? Do you buy that? Or some joke I read, the stipend pays itself - in that respect you still get the equivalent of a first land. Yes, without a stipend then. What a serious joke all in all.
My message to everyone is this one, thanks for the support and re-comfort. If I had a deal and had to decide, I'd sacrifice the goods I have loss, in exchange for LL to never allow this to happen to anyone of you out there.
SL the virtual world is as good or bad as the real world, same deal, the big shots get looked after, and the poor get buried and forgotten. Life hasn't changed much even after 2007 years. It's more "modern", maybe, but it's still the same. When you are popular and famous you get things for free - even in SL.
greed |gr?d| noun intense and selfish desire for something, esp. wealth, power, or food. ORIGIN late 16th cent.: back-formation from greedy .

We have solved your issue Hi there, Rollbacks do not work for avatars, it isn't possible to do that. From the looks of the image you passed, it just looks like a loading issue with your inventory. If you clear cache and relog, it should load up properly. Go to preferences (ctrl+p) > Network > Clear Cache... then log out of second life and return, then check your inventory again. I suffered from the "object missing from database" for over 3 months now and went through all the hoops and loops the those so-called LL employes told me to do to try to resolve the problem. Nothing worked. They finally told me my stuf will never return. I've lost hundreds of items, some that I bought, some that I myself created. Av's, houses, copy, no copy, anything goes.
I have stopped creating anything. I'm just fiddling around with sculpties for now, but I'm fast getting bored with the crap pile that SL has become.
I have my finger ready to push the "abandon land" button with everything in it.
I can just imagine a big corp having the same problems... Big corp A - we cannot rez our corporate building, it shows in the inventory list, but will not rez.
LL- did you try to clear your cache?
Big corp A - yes, you are the third one to make that suggestion. Can't you guys do a search on the server and find our stuff?
LL- Sorry, but that would imply actually trying to find a solution to your problems. We are just content to take your money and leave you hanging.
you can guess what the big corp will do next. We should all do the same. Cut our losses and get out.

SL is RL, there is no "SL" yet. The REAL SL won't look/be like that, I promise. "SL" IS BECOMING S HELL. The things that I cannot stand anymore is those saboteurs and impostures, crooks who buy cheap parcels in new SIMs and build tall and ugly things and force people to buy their parcels expensive or sell theirs at loss. These guys are obvious, many work in gang. Sending an ARs solves F' all for that. What I do is right click on their about land and see how many Prims they have left for their "business", usually it's Maxed out and yet they don't sell anything or don't have any genuine reason to impose such monstrosity, the worse part is that because LLs are releasing so many SIMs, prices is going down, and the waterfront is becoming polluted - trust me on that. So, what's the option for our "second life"? An island! I have seen guys buying 512s and then stuck ugly skyscrapers and set it for sale the next minute at double/triple the price. - This thread should be sticked. In third life maybe!

What you describe has been going on since before I came to SL. Unfortunately, that's human nature. Humans are the worst animal on earth, destroying everything in the name of greed.

Grrrr - I am so sorry this happened. I have lost major items myself - they just poof from inventory or return a "object not in database" message. It's really frustrating. While I haven't yet lost an entire folder of posessions worth hundreds of RL dollars, my attitude towards SL changed when I began to lose things on a regular basis...it had to. I went back to thinking about it as a "game"
Let us know if this turns up eventually.

I lost some scripts for Petes sake. They were in a prim that was in my inventory. The scripts seemed to be still in its content tab, but were not accessible.

Unless I am just 'unlucky', I lost 4 scripted screens last night during an installation for a client. Permissions just suddenly changed on them, I was no longer the owner (waiting) was, despite clearing cache and relogging serveral times, nothing, finally I was able to take them back into my inventory, but they never appeared. As I am a firm believer in the customer shouldn't suffer as they paid their money, I kept trying, screen after screen, until I eventually gave up and went back to my shop, made another one, which took 30 minutes to appear in my inventory after I took it, then dropped it to my customer, who rezzed it and it worked perfectly. Although I lost quite a bit in the transaction and didn't make any money, what is important, is that the customer understood the issues and was still happy. Happy customers=more sales and recommendations=profit long term.

AWM, I can see you are NO newbie, I believe in your expertise and confidence in what you are doing and saying. So, I am not the only one going through this nightmare.
I can tell you that we always had a compensation in RL for loss of telephone or ISP, without even needing an insurance. They called it gesture of "good will" and they always gave back more than what we loss. My mum never had to complain either.
For example, here in SL, there are too many downtimes and upgrades... I say that it would be very reasonable of them to offer premium members some stipends for every downtime.

From: Gina Jacks OF course I cleared cached 20 times and all that... why do these people assume that I am a newbie - while their hardware is responsible for such a loss? Yes, I sent a bug report too - nearly a week now. In fairness, most people don't know or wouldn't think to try and clear their cache. On Live Help the number of residents that were helped by a "clear cache and relog onto another, quiet sim" by far outnumbered the ones with actual inventory loss. I don't know what you wrote in your original message, but it's best to just play dumb and list every single thing you tried to solve it yourself (including things you know wouldn't work). Clear cache and relog, clear cache and relog onto a quiet sim, reinstall SL, just waiting 2 days, etc. If you miss pointing out one trivial thing to try, that's the suggestion you'll get back. Additionally, the Lindens who do tech support can't actually assist with lost inventory even if they wanted to. They don't have the expertise to go poke and mess with the asset server. It would probably also take a few hours per case to get to the bottom of what happened, so it's more economic for them to suggest things that work for the majority and sidestep the minority that actually lost something.
