I have, and I was just readin this in another post, that reminded me: From: Dana Hickman Whew... I thought it was only me Seems the window to try that sort of thing is closing, or closed for those of us who cant voice on a computer in the living room, in a house where someone is almost always home. Yeah, nobody ever thinks about folks that can't speak in RL, are deaf/hearing impaired, or can't use Voice for other reasons in SL...Voice is (VERY gradually) becoming a requirement in a lotta circles. When my SL pals are online, normally it just so happens that it's around midnight or later...so even if my headset mic WAS workin...I would have to wake everybody up just to "be cool". To the places I HAVE been to that say "you're gonna have to get Voice"...well I tell em to buy me a new headset & move me to a new apartment then. Just ta be "difficult", I might forget about the headset & never use Voice in SL...just wait for a few years until a non-user is as rare as a $3500 Survey, and maybe I'll give in. I can see why folks wanna use Voice for combat (real-time strategy in calls), and conferences, but just for nightclubs, etc...I say screw Voice if have to be inconvenienced to use it. I'm in a group called "SL Voice Impaired" (lol), and the description pretty much fits the cases I mentioned above...not ANTI-Voice, just "we can't hear you" or can't speak in it.

I turned voice off after hearing way too much crap in the background.
I don't want to hear:
people eating sleeping at the computer talking on the phone using the restroom (dear god are you that addicted you take the laptop in there?) kids screaming in the background televisions and radios (really annoying at clubs and events) pets
you get the idea...

sleeping, eating and going to the toilet?? man thats bad
worst i'v had is someone unloading there dishwasher while a group of us were watching a movie in SL.
i don't understand the people who have really really private conversations in open voice. i'v not tryed it but i'm sure there is a way to private voice.
anyway i live by myself and could quite easily use voice whenever i like, i just don't tho unless i absolutly have to. meetings etc. it kinda ruins the whole experiance and have only ever enjoyed it once
in a nightclub?? do they still say hooooo!!!111!! HowlZZZZ!!111? or just do that over voice now?

Yes a recent job asked me to get voice,
05-26-2008 16:53
and what I disliked about it is, I can make notes from meetings done without voice which you cannot do from a voice meeting. Chat log is a great thing in what a person really says. This comes in handy in being able to know/recall just what is discussed, asked or needed from you or a group to be done from such a meeting or job. Particularly when they can't recall just what they said or asked you to do for them, why I suspect they are now having so many issues with their project. So I don't for see ever accepting any further jobs requiring voice, and no they never offered to pay for my set up with voice just to be part of their project. But I did it on my time with my dime or L, and can very well do without it in the future.

ya But if you do go on voice "coz it's cool" it's tarded, ppls just slamming on ea other, not talking about really anything, spamming noise and wow their choice in muzak or my fav reading aloud what is being typed in local chat, wth? All so you have the angler fish dot and proved you were a fem. I talk on googletalk and the phn, and ditched voice. Some one is making a little movie in SL and some of the parts, you have to talk, that wouldn't bother me I am thinking.

I've had problems with friends, or rather one friend in particular.
I used to hang out with a group in a sandbox. One of the members of the group was the RL wife of the guy who owned the sim, so we hung out quite a bit. But when voice came in, things started getting more and more quiet.. to the point where I, as a non-voicer, felt really kind of excluded from everything.
So I went off on my own, concentrated on my projects and work.. then one of my friends and collaborators started.. evangelizing voice, and really putting the pressure on me to use it. Eventually I had to make a choice about revealing the specific personal issues that keep me fro using voice, thereby risking losing his friendship.. or telling him to *expletive* off and definitely losing his friendship. I ended up explaining the whys and wherefores of it all... and things seemed to calm down for a while.
Then he sent me a headset.
I just.. it's so amazingly frustrating to me. SL is a much lonlier place than it was before voice. I was socially isolated and housebound when I joined SL.. and now I'm so much the same in SL thanks to voice. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
And what's worse is, I wish I could join in, but I can't.
So if you see me online.. say hi.. cause odds are I'm sitting on my building platform, alone.

So far, I have only had one occasion where someone said I had to at least listen using Voice. He was hosting a business meeting, and felt he could talk faster than he could type.
I pointed out that all his spoken comments would not be able to be referred to later, while any text chat comments made an automated transcript... 2/3 of the people at the meeting who attempted to use Voice were back in text chat by the end, because a lot of us simply couldn't understand them even if they DID have a mic and we had sound on... That fellow never insisted on Voice again, after that.
I think if anyone ever got to be a real pain about wanting to hear me use Voice, I'd tell them to listen real close, and then play a recorded sound of a dog barking at 110 decibels...
I fall in the category of "Sorry, I don't live alone or in the basement". I feel it is very rude and annoying to my RL family for me to be having a one-sided conversation over Voice while they are trying to watch TV in the same room. And my environment here is rarely a quiet one. Barking dogs, kids, TV, radio, Dishwasher, low-flying planes... I can type and have a civil conversation. But I can't Voice.
Winter, you're welcome to text chat with me any time, hon. We can chat about building tricks.

There's technology in development to enable voice communication without speaking by detecting sub-vocal speech. If that comes to be, then you will be able to chat in voice at midnight without disturbing the household.

This is what I often do, but if more than just me and one voicer is around, I end up behind, or left out completely. Meaning 2 voicers (Or more) and me. I just can't type as fast as they talk.

This is exactly what I was referring to when I posted what Xio quoted in the OP. Someone's always on the TV just 12 feet away trying to get into a movie and usually not doing very well at it with kids in the house. After hours when everyone crashes or passes out it's still the same.. people are trying to sleep and could easily hear every word that would be said. That, plus the fact I don't really care to hear anyone's RL voice is why I've never had voice setup at all. I've never ran into a place where someone said voice was required, although I DO hear about them here and there. I DO seem to find myself in places where people are using voice only, and it always seems like a wasteland. Thats when I play my 'cue crickets' sound gesture and leave

I usually have voice enabled, but rarely use it. In fact, I mostly don't put the headset on, unless I'm having a conversation, or see that others are using voice, which for me, is very rare.
Sometimes i like to use voice, because i get tired of typing all the time..

Meaning 2 voicers (Or more) and me. I just can't type as fast as they talk. Sitting there alone in a room full of people.. it's hard when you type and no one "looks down" to see you've said anything.. it's hard thinking they might be ignoring you. Typing to the silence, all the people sitting there like zombies.. you just can sense that they're probably all using voice, and ignoring you... but then again, maybe they're afk. Turning on voice so I can hear.. only PROVES that they're ignoring me... I have found that KNOWING I'm being ignored FEELS MUCH WORSE than thinking they MIGHT be ignoring me. And there's quite a lot of bandwidth to consider, "just listening". Not to mention the problem of being constantly 30-60 seconds lagged in conversation and unable to "keep up" even if they DID deign to notice you.

One place comes to mind- LMAO Comedy Club. Possibly others. Stand-up comedy isnt funny when its being typed. Do I use the Voice Feature itself? Not often. Just when a situation calls for it. And I still love the different accents! And from using Voice in SL I've learned that everything I was taught in High School French class isn't even close In other online activities, such as when playing tactical shooters, Voice is a requirement. He who types ends up dead & out.

i was asked to use voice by a modelling agency for live shows etc..whilst i can see it might be easier and look more professional during the show , it was just a fandango really. Accents are wonderful things, but REALLY hard to understand when everyone is butting in. Most of us reverted to type after about 15 mins of this ridiculous voice instructions scenario.
whats wrong with group IM's anyway?
Its not for me at all..and yes sometimes i feel excluded , the quality of conversation ive heard so far (content and sound quality lol) just isnt enough to lure me to set it up again.
