Curious what about those of us that own Mature lots paid lots and lot of real life dollars for but never or rarely do anything mature on them? How will this affect us if we don't want to give out more then our credit card information? If I am reading correctly those that don`t are stuck in a non mature part(s) of SL. I think you guys are confusing "mature" with "adult." Part of the new system is to be able to flag parcels as "adult." This has nothing to do with the current designation of sims as mature or PG, though presumably adult builds may only be constructed in mature sims. As I understand it, people who do not submit to age verification will continue to have their current levels of access to mature areas not flagged "adult." |

Does no one here see the risk that a lot of sl residents will be running if they give proof of id to an unnamed American company....I am just an ordinary citizen but I think we're going to see a lot of folks leaving sl for this reason before age verification comes in! Why choose one of those extremes? Why not just continue to play SL without submitting to age verification? Are there really so many players for whom the only reason to login to SL will be to access areas flagged "adult" and who are unwilling to verify their age? |

I think the point that Flaran is making is that many of us see it as simply an invasion of privacy to even be asked to provide such confidential information. Some cultures are more willing to provide details of personal lives to any Tom Dick or Harry. In Europe/UK many people are averse to providing such potentially "flammable" information to strangers.

Take a look at the "provider" of these authentication services at http://integrity.aristotle.com Everyone who wants to give their private information to a firm that lists none of its principals, officers, or ownership on its web-site, please raise your hand. http://www.aristotle.com/management.htm It looks like the principals are John Aristotle Phillips and Dean Aristotle Phillips. Hmmm. Phillips.... And lol it looks like they'll have the political connections to find our social security numbers with or without our permission, and get away with publishing them to boot. |

I don't get it. People have been asking for a verification system. LL gives us one, and everyone is up in arms? Think about it, how can a griefer keep coming back if he must prove who he is? It keeps teens off the grid, to will help with griefers, and protect you and LL legally. Please tell me how this is a bad move?

No I don`t think so flagging meaning those that are adults. ANd those taht don`t provide the information are not allowed there. Thats how i read the blog. LLABS is making such big issues about this. And making things more and more complex...... Yes many wanted the verification but not like this..... |

I have a question who is required to flag as adult parcel? Do skin makers who have display photos showing the entire full nude body avatar in the skins need to flag their parcels? Someone said yes on another post. If this is so then this will hurt their business unless they go redo all their displays. Cause I am not providing private info other than my CC that I use for my prem acct and this would make it to where I can't shop at skin places too. So where is the line drawn on sexually explicit? Are there clear examples of their ideas of sexually explicit?

Think about it, how can a griefer keep coming back if he must prove who he is? It keeps teens off the grid, to will help with griefers, and protect you and LL legally. Please tell me how this is a bad move? Griefers just have their playgrounds reduced somewhat, and teens will still wildly roam the main grid. Ironically RL partners wishing to use a sex pose will need to both verify, while a teen escort can engage in phone sex with a client on PG land by merit of integrated voice and there won't even be a way to AR that since no records of voice conversations are kept. Someone will need to explain why a sex pose is considered more harmful and more "pornographic" than voice sex. Protection ![]() The only way this scheme would work is to suspend every single account until they verify and only then will you have a grid where everything that happens is between adults. Allow just one loophole and there is no merit in it. Also, it seems that it's customary for things in the US to be verified by merely sending in some piece of paper, but where I live mostly everything requires you to show up in person, with very good reason. Without a physical presence there is really no guarantee that the documentation actually belongs to the person who sent it in. (Edited to add that people seem to miss that violence will need censoring too) |

Kitty - I agree. I think the entire grid should be held to this, not just "adult flagged" areas.

All of you posting with the "it's the parents' responsibility!" and "only the children of dreadful irresponsible parents who obviously don't care what their kids are doing get on the adult grid" crack me up. Seriously, were you never teenagers? Did you spend your entire adolescence sitting in your mother's lap?
Age verification seems like a fine idea, certainly the rabble has been calling for it for as long as I have been reading the forums (not long, mind you). Personally, as a non-American, I don't hand over any personal information to any company, agency or other, that is subject the PATRIOT act, so this kind of age verification won't happen to/for me. |

It does make me wonder... why will age verification be required for anything that hints of sex, but apparently you will still be able get realistic (and ott) SL guns regardless of verification status? Why is life creation censored, but life destruction lauded?

I have seen more nudity in cologne ads than all I saw in SL...
Anyway... then... does 'mature' places have something to do with 'adult' places? Because most of the places I visit are flagged as 'mature', and I am not going to give my private data to a damn company... Also, when I was younger, I played games like Doom 2, at the age of 7, and many games like Unreal Tournament, Half-Life and Counter-Strike, which are rated as 18+... and I am not a crazy person who thinks everybody is a frag. I've seen 18+ people getting crazy for playing these games, and kids who were younger who are completely sane. Really, age restrictions are useless. And yeah, I think it is parent's responsability and the user responsability. You should find a way which don't affect to people who follow the rules... I had to wait 1 year to be able to register in Second Life, and now I got the age verification. I followed the rules and now I need to give my personal information. You should think about the point of this before getting it into the grid. Young kids may be able to create an adult account with a fake or stolen ID, as I have seen young kids using their parent bank accounts, so we are in the same point were we started. Summary: Age verification system is pointless and disturbing, at least for me ![]() |

Why is life creation censored, but life destruction lauded? Probably for the same reason that teens can legally watch tens of thousands of depictions of murder by the time they are 18 yet a national controversy is caused over a nipple being exposed on live TV. Anyway... then... does 'mature' places have something to do with 'adult' places? Because most of the places I visit are flagged as 'mature', and I am not going to give my private data to a damn company... Adult is supposed to be a subset of mature - any mature rated sim that has "adult" content, however that might be defined, has to sign up to the new system and ban people who won't submit to the new layer of age verification. So you can live in and visit a mature sim but as soon as there is any "adult" content then the owner has to list it as an adult area or face problems with LL. |

LL Can Stick This Idea Where The Sun Don't Shine
05-05-2007 02:17
First I have been SL for three years. They have my CC number. I had to age verify my daughter to get her in. So unless they think I gave birth at the age of 2. They know i am over the age of 18.
Second: Per the SS admistration. The only people who are allowed to asked for your SS number is your employer or the tax man. Even part of it. Third: In this age of home land security many driver licenses holders are are required to have federal back ground checks. Particually hazmat holders. Not to mention for anyone who drives for a living thier license is their pay check. Fourth:If a kid wants to get around it. Grab dads wallet and type in the info. LL has to be smoking crack to think any person in thier right mind is going to hand over the keys to kingdom when it comes to personal information. No video game in this world is worth that. The SL apologists can say "OH it's okay it's foolpoof" Let me tell you something, nothing is foolrpoof. If it was we wouldn't be reading where the major names in data storage have had security leaks. Let us not forget LL and thier little screw up not too long. In a nut shell to Phil or any other Linden reading this. Piss off I am not doing it. Rox |

Reading more closely I can see that we are supposed to use our "common sense" when deciding what is or isn't adult, but that:
As a general rule, “Adult Content” is any content that is explicitly sexual or excessively violent in nature. Explicitly sexual is very hard to determine - does it mean full frontal nudity, partial nudity, nudity in a sexual context? (ie museum or art gallery nudes are not included), a shop that sells skimpy clothing? A shop that sells sexy bikinis? A shop that sells tiny little silk or stripper outfits? Gorean sims where perhaps there isnt any public sex going on but people wander around rping sex slaves? Clubs where dancers perform sometimes? It also looks like LL is going to rely on other people to enforce this standard because according to LL its easy to identify what does or does not fall within the standard: Land containing adult content which is not clearly marked as such, will be easily identifiable by the community, which can either raise concerns directly with the landowner or with Linden Lab via the Abuse channel. So provided someone thinks your land contains "adult content" they can abuse report you. |

On the one hand I am happy that this is done but on the other hand... not really happy
first why i am happy: I life in Holland and by law (rules) atm I am not allowed a CC (creditcard) at this time.\ A few years back I all most went bankrupt the government had to step in... no I asked them to step in, this was my right doing so. They granted my request and I had to live for 3 years under that law... with no privacy my financial affairs where taken over by a lawyer and my mail was filtered by him. I payed my due and was cut free to life in a the normal world again but with a 5 year restriction of NO LOANS, NO CREDIT CARD (see loans ![]() this as um i want to go to a different bank because i don't like them anymore) Anyways that's in short why i can't get verified in SL. Ok so why I am i happy now ok well to put simply YAY i can bloody get Verified!!! Right? ... now LL only has to take away the Paypal restriction so i can pay with my un-verified Paypal and i am done and i am a happy camper.... (BTW a company called Click and Buy in th UK has me verified .... something Paypal says they can't do without a CC lol go figure) Why am i not happy: Well privacy for one, the not knowing the name of the company that going to do this... Look if it's Verisign i would be happy again i know them because i worked with them when when i worked for a internet provider. But why the hell has premium account have to do this or a verified account... this is beyond my comprehension. BTW when i went to the US in 2003 they scanned my passport and poof my face was on the screen so i am happy to give that number... because i am all ready in that system... want my fingerprints..... DNA... sure no problem.... So if it gets me a verified account i would be happy if they do what i said about Paypal. I mean this as a alternative to CC verification not as they planned it as is. this should be a extra service for peeps that want to be verified and it has to be done by a company like Verisign.
