From: Dnali Anabuki I don't think it is just Mature parcels since the land owner has to set an adult content flag on the land. Quote from Blog: "Do I have to submit to age verification? You need only provide age verification if you choose to enter areas in Second Life that have been flagged as having adult content. Going forward, estate and parcel owners will be required to flag the presence of adult content on their land. Access to that area will then be restricted to age-verified Residents only. Flagging adult areas provides notice to adults that content contained in the area may be objectionable to them. Age-verification provides an added layer of protection against minors who have gained unauthorized access to the world. In addition, anyone wishing to gain access on the Teen Second Life will be required to submit to age verification. " So, the new griefer M.O. will be having people put pr0n and stuff on your PG or not-Mature parcel in a visible place so that you get A.R.'ed and booted out of SL? Wonderful.... I do so hope the Lindens can see through that kind of stupidity. .

And what about full frontal (and rear as applicable) of skins in a shop in my mall? Does that kick it into 'adult'? What about nippless/crotchless items but with stars or whatever over the nipples/genitalia?
Do I have to rearrange my mall so I can parcel off both flavors of those shops into a 'forbidden fruit' area?

I guess I'll make this my last post in this thread since I don't want to get into a flaming/shouting contest.
There has been many threads posted about age verification. Anytime the subject comes up there are the usual comments about "I ain't giving no one my personal information" or "You guys are stupid to think that someone can't get around the system" or "Big Brother is coming". All predictable. And always seem to be the same people too. I've been politely (sometimes not so politely) told that I could leave when I scream about Customer Service (or more the lack of). So now it's my turn. This is something that has been sorely needed for a while now with the growing popularity of Second Life. Without it we all are at risk..........personally at risk. An adult "playing" with a minor can be held liable. Even if that adult thought the minor was of age. The question will be raised "why would you think that when nothing is in place to give you a reason to think that?" And without an effort on LL's part you are on your own..........naked to the consequences. Now we get a possible solution and some of you reject it out of hand.
So I say (as I've been told) "Don't let the door smack you on the butt on your way out".

This isn't really to verify age, it's to verify SL income, I imagine.

Char Yes all nudity is filthy and needs to be outlawed everywhere in case someone sees it. The Taliban have already decreed this and LL is following their example. I think that LL should even ban looking at yourself nude unless you have submitted age verification.

Would just like to use the least sensitive document for this, like a driver's license i guess rather than a passport or SIN. Personally I don't have a problem with verification and it should have been implemented from the start and fragmenting 'mature' SL is crazy. Why not just get the whole damn grid verified then?

DANIEL - a question!
05-04-2007 19:55
Passport is on the ready to be scanned ahead of time, personally. Where I work we have to process this all the time. It's safe enough. Personally I am GLAD that LL are doing this - it also means that tons of alts for griefers in mature content areas are also now not possible. YAY. BUT does the name on the card have to match the passport is the thing - cos the card on the account is and always has been my boyfriend's card as I don't have one which is accepted by LL (UK strikes again). That's clearly with his consent, given the volume of transactions which have been allowed over the last year but is a discrepancy. I guess I am thinking of this angle because work needs to be compliant with a full on Gaming Licence as opposed to just protecting itself and users from any allegation of providing unsuitable content to the Under 18s. I'm pretty sure the forum will be read for questions on this topic so here's hoping Daniel sees it.

From: Susie Boffin Yes all nudity is filthy and needs to be outlawed everywhere in case someone sees it. The Taliban have already decreed this and LL is following their example. I think that LL should even ban looking at yourself nude unless you have submitted age verification. That was my first through Susie. Skin shops will be out of bounds. Many art galleries will be out of bounds if they continue with the kinds of exhibits they do now. (The kinds of exhibits that wouldn't be out of place in a RL gallery.) Lots of role-playing sims will be out of bounds, even though they're popular with people who do not role play but go along to admire the spectacular builds and atmosphere (Midian City being one example of many). I should add that I'm not against verification at all, but it seems to me we have moved goalposts and double standards here. On the one hand LL once claimed to have verified my age and identity via my credit card. But that's not good enough anymore. On the other, my age, identity and bank account has been verified with Paypal, and I understand LL are aware of that due to our Paypal agreement. That's not good enough either. The double standard comes in where one catchment of users (Americans) get to verify with a minimal, uncompromising amount of information (last four digits of SS number), but another catchment (international users) must provide documents that have been used in their own jurisdictions to perpetrate identity related crimes. But Linden Lab wants me to send this documentation (or copies of it) to a company on the other side of the world, governed by data protection laws I'm completely unfamiliar with? ...and for what? To be involved in an online community? To build 3D objects? To play a game? As they say in London town, "you're 'avin a larf, ain't ya?"

Im going to guess that by knowing the last 4 digits of your social security number they can look up your age by knowing some of your other information. I dont know that for a fact but I think the first 3 are a location thing. Is there something in Other countries that allows that? I dont like people not being grandfathered in, really. Im not saying this proposed system is good either - Just wondering in response.

I've been in SL for over two years. I've owned stores, sims, clubs, and companies. I've paid you thousands of dollars. I have given you my credit card number once, which I had to cancel because you let it get compromised by some script kiddy. I gave it to you again, because we all make mistakes. However, my trust in internet based companies is non-existent at this point except for a rare few. Therefore there is no way on earth that I will provide you, or a company you employ, with any government issued document or number. Sorry, not happening. I can cancel a credit card if things go wrong. I can't cancel my citizenship card.
To put it bluntly, your plan sucks.
"Integrity is an international fraud prevention, age and identity verification service that integrates a government-issued ID database check, algorithms and web-based signature capture. The service provides merchants and government agencies with Patriot Act compliance and compliance with age verification laws and guidelines."
Patriot Act compliance....patriot act compliance......sounds delightfully private.

What about those people living in the United States who do not have Social Security numbers, or do not feel comfortable providing even PART of their social security number to a company that has ALREADY had it's user database and Credit Card database compromised previously??
How much is this "fee" going to be fornon-premium members? and will the age verification persist for premium members who downgrade?
Additionally.. are we talking about a recurring or one time fee?
Can we expect an lsl function to spawn from this
if(llAgeCheck(llDetectedKey(0) == TRUE) llGiveInventory("...... else llSay(0, "sorry....

I am not going to give LL part of my social security number or my driver's license number. I'm not interested in SL, cartoon pornography. If I want porn I will go down the internet hallway to the left. LL has a bad track record with holding our sensitive data including passwords and credit card information. I buy my Linden dollars from SLX, so I've been wondering why I even leave my credit card information with LL. If this eventually forces me to leave SL, then I will. I don't see why they don't have everyone provide CC info as they are signing up as most content providing sites/services do. Can't they tell how old someone is from that? Is it really that important anyways? Someone on the blog said most places/sites with pornographic images have a disclaimer that states something like "by entering you are verifying that you are 18 years of age or older". Why should we all have to suffer and compromise our security because there are bad parents out there who do not take part in their children's lives and interests. I'm sure there are security programs out there that could easily block programs like SL from being installed or used. Sure there are some textures that are pure pornography, but most of SL looks like a big cartoon, including the poseball sex. People pay enough money for this cash cow; age verification should be free since LL allowed this to go on in the first place. Maybe if the platform were running up to par, I could imagine them charging for such a thing. I wont be giving them anymore personal information in this world...only in their imaginations.

The National Insurance card is our equivalent I suppose ( see here) but I don't think any of the digits have related to date of birth (or approximate age) for over thirty years. I believe that's why Integrity require something that declares this information explicitly, like a driving license or a passport. You have a point that it doesnt seem fair you have to give up information so personal while US residents give up what they give every insurance company, employer, college, phone company, etc all the time. Still a lot of US residents arent going to accept this system either since they wont trust "some internet place" having that info.

From my understanding of the blog and what Robin Linden said, unverified accounts will still be able to arrive on mature sims; but the "adult parcel label" will prevent these accounts from entry. I guess you would be blocked from your own property. Could you still access it from the neighboring parcel or even see inside still?
P.S. I think displayed naked shapes on an ad is ok in a mature or PG area. They shouldn't be labeled "adult" or "XxX" or whatever this new parcel label is. The only reason it should be restricted to mature or adult is if it shows genitalia. The chest or breast area should not be considered such.

From: Dnali Anabuki Really! That would be great. How would this stop alts tho, don't understand? Nooo not stopping alts but if there is a limit to how many verified accounts can get onto one ID ... then the unverified alts can't spam Adult areas.

From: Faybot Foxley I LL has a bad track record with holding our sensitive data including passwords and credit card information. It doesn't sound like they'll be the ones holding it. From: someone Linden Lab will not store any personally identifying information about you as a result of the age verification process. We simply record that your avatar is age-verified.

This is a potential nightmare as people have been expressing in many different ways. I'm wondering whether the Lindens are doing this as something to show legal agencies who don't like the adult aspects of SL that they have done their bit. If they try to make something really stringent it will quite likely cause mayhem.
One issue is that we must be given a good long time to sign up to this. If the verification company suddenly have 150000 people in many different countries needing verified in a week they will have problems to put it mildly.
Another problem is that many abuse reports will be generated by this move. There must be VERY CLEAR RULES on what requires a parcel to have a Mature flag. Otherwise people will be being thrown off SL left right and centre for what may be minor things. The Lindens look like they're going down a very dangerous path with the phrase 'Landowners are morally and legally responsible for the content displayed and the behavior taking place on their land.' No legal system in the world takes this viewpoint and the Lindens are lucky it doesn't or they'd all be in jail for allowing internet gambling in the USA. If I shoot someone in someone else's house, does the owner of the house get charged? Landowners should only be viewed as in breach when they have instigated actions. What will they do when two tenants of Ansche Cheung get involved in some spontaneous SL sex in a parcel not marked as mature? Will they chuck her off SL? If they get these rules wrong they will find themselves in a host of horrible situations like these in 10 seconds flat. If LL relies on abuse reports alone to police this they are handing a terribly effective weapon to people with grudges against other users to get them thrown off SL if they feel like it.
The blog entry does not mention the point raised in many posts here that if they do not want unverified people to be able to view the content of Mature parcels they will have to stop line of sight and cameras entering these parcels for unverified users. Are they going to make them transparent? Or worse, blocked out in black or something? If they don't address this the whole thing is pointless - and that fact will triple the outrage when people start getting booted off for violations.
Considering all this it might cause less grief to simply insist everyone in SL get verified or remain in a PG area.
Like most people, I'm pro the idea in principle. I once came across a young teenage girl who'd snuck onto the adult grid and told me about being exploited by some guy, and it made me feel ill. But it needs to be done very very carefully.
