When these forums go, it's one less thing I have to enjoy about SL. It makes me sad :(

I'm quite sure there will be nothing like Resident Answers in the new forums structure. Hence the need to declare victory for Second Life Answers three weeks ago.

Well, it's worth debating whether there's a difference between "get all the money from our customers that we can" (which I'd contend would be the general culture at the companies you mention)

and "these people, our customers, are ___holes; why should we bother to give them good customer service, when we're going to replace them with billion-dollar contracts from corporations and people who love Facebook?", which I'd contend is the dominant LL culture. (I don't think every LL employee holds to that, but I think it IS sanctioned from Above.)

To me the difference is, one culture assumes that some general level of good service helps the growth of the business; the other does not.

Funny. I never knew "Upgrading" was a synonym for "Castrating".

Indeed, this comment says it all:

"As part of the transition, we're removing some redundant forums and streamlining others, so you can more easily find the information you're looking for. We want the forums to be about conversations with a purpose; to that end, we're paring down to some of the most focused forums, and letting other conversations continue off-site, or even better: inworld. Hm. That was a nice time reading, learning and ocassionally posting here. One and a half year or so (only, because I found it late after being only inworld before). I was never disappointed here. Excellent people while the two major themes in 2009 (OS/Zindra) and excellent tips and tricks in the different building/scripting forums and the coolest thing I ever saw is the resident answers forum here as a whole.

And I learned some english :D

Maybe useful for the new thing :D

I have a feeling (by reading the official announcement) that the new thing will be less fun, because heavy moderated, deconstructed/reduced and strange layouted.

But we will see... as ever :)

Observing LL activities along three years being in SL created a thick elephant skin, so to speak, hehehe - this should be a well enough preparation for the new forum pease pudding in which we have to jump in.

You definitely made the Zindra affair a lot of fun to keep up with with your posts. :)

and just to make this seem even more likely, from the discussion:

From: Lexie Linden
Resident Answers from the forums is much like Second Life Answers. Consolidating those two "communities of help" can create an even better Resident helping Resident resource. As needed we can even expand the current Answers categories to accommodate more topics within, for example: Creating broke down into Building, Texturing etc. When it gets closer to time to try that, there will be a discussion thread to get Resident input.

These forums will be viewable by all and searchable by normal search engines once they are closed.

Does that bother anyone? The posts were made under the impression that they were visible only to SL members and not available to Google.

Doesn't bother me but some folks might not like it.

The classified forums are largely going the way of the dodo too, however you can use Xstreet banner ads or the Xstreet auto feed for new products. This upgrade sure isn't looking like an improvement.

It doesn't bother me, but I have half a mind to delete all my posts just out of spite.

*I could have just stopped at "I have half a mind", probably.

I know they've been dying to get rid of the classified forums for ages (they tried to once before, a few years ago) because they don't get any cut off of it.

I can't figure out the new blog/forum whatever it is, or even wherever it is. I always thought it was some sort of skeleton, waiting to be filled out. But even then, I couldn't figure out how to find anything.

I assume that is kind of the point, though.

LL: blah blah "after listening to feedback" blah blah "update" blah blah "improvement" blah blah "scalability" blah blah
Residents: You keep using those words. We do not think they mean what you think they mean.

That is a very good point.

While I genuinely hope that no one who's posted here is distressed by this, part of me is thrilled that there will finally be a workable Search on the Forums.

(My guess is that short of new-tech stuff, a lot of the information here will be more easily found, and more useful, on a closed/dead Forums, than on a live Blogs.)

Enjoy it while you can (it will be excised as "cruft" on the Blogs.)

A general discussion area is 'make or break' for me.

We shall see.

I mean this with all seriousness and admiration, but between that and your foreboding post yesterday, you are really here by a thread. :(

*No pun intended.

What do you mean Des? Make or break for forums, or make or break for SL? or both?

You are scaring me now

The thing is, you're hardly unusual in that.

If the reasoning at LL is "if we disallow any discussion other than of prims and scripting, then we will have a happy, contented base of paying customers that will grow and grow"...

...then I have to say that the maker of that decision knows little of human nature.

For my participation in the forums.

I hope there is a general discussion area. If so, I'll stay. If not... little point.
