If we wanted people to stop posting, do you think we would contribute to keeping this thread so high on the "new posts" list? Nothing even remotely "control freak" about what has been posted. Yet another thread where everybody posts "awww, poor baby, bots = bad mmmkay" will do nothing whatsoever to prevent it happening again and again. LL are not going to come in and save people from bots. They've shown repeatedly that they will not get involved. Educating the OP and others though, actually stands a small chance of saving some people. To tell the OP anything other than "you made a mistake, you have to live with it" is holding out false hope. Playing along with the "rip off" thing suggests that the bot is entirely in the wrong and something can be done about it. Nobody forced them to make a mistake, nobody forced them to attempt land selling without reading. LL will not display any sympathy in this matter (just as they never have before). People have posted links to the relevant knowledgebase articles, suggestions have been made here and in other threads, proposals are posted on JIRA. Instead of complaining about bots all day, people are actually trying to do things and come up with new ways to protect the "innocent" from themselves. Still think nobody is doing anything constructive? The fact that they have no sympathy doesn't mean they want to control the OP or side with the bots. If you doubt that education is needed when it comes to selling land, here's the latest thread: /327/d5/178358/1.htmlYet another person who feels their land was "stolen" because of a basic mistake. Yet another place where tea and sympathy will do nothing to change anything.

From: Sunspot Pixie That's just too damned bad, control freaks. It's an issue that will be talked about. When I make a mistake in RL, my boss won't come to me in a way "Oh poor Jo, you made a mistake? Oh poor poor girl... Do you need a shoulder to cry on for a moment?" No, he will make me very clear what I have done wrong and may surely hope I learned a very good lesson from it. And right now I just see only one person "freaking out". Morwen.

Nothing even remotely "control freak" about what has been posted. I don't know. I was thinking about it, and I just can't grasp why you care so much that some people are compassionate and that the OP used the word "ripoff". You're reprimanding, more than once, as have others. SO tell me, what IS IT you hope to achieve by stating and restating the obvious over and over? From: Sys Slade Yet another thread where everybody posts "awww, poor baby, bots = bad mmmkay" will do nothing whatsoever to prevent it happening again and again. LL are not going to come in and save people from bots. They've shown repeatedly that they will not get involved. Educating the OP and others though, actually stands a small chance of saving some people. What thread are you reading? "everbody"? Im not even gonna touch that exaggeration, because its's plain as day. From: Sys Slade To tell the OP anything other than "you made a mistake, you have to live with it" is holding out false hope. Playing along with the "rip off" thing suggests that the bot is entirely in the wrong and something can be done about it. Nobody forced them to make a mistake, nobody forced them to attempt land selling without reading. LL will not display any sympathy in this matter (just as they never have before). Maybe some people are capable of empathy? Is that out of fashion now? Still think nobody is doing anything constructive? The fact that they have no sympathy doesn't mean they want to control the OP or side with the bots. Hammering on the OP over and over about his choice of terminology and labeling people as babies and what not is not constructive. It's not educational. Posting links to information is, for those who will see that and go learn, but it is already a moot point to tell the OP to go read it, he knows it now, he learned the hard way. It simply fuels more animosity. And I don't buy it, about not wanting to control. I've watched this same sequence play out in literally dozens of threads. Someone posts that they made a mistake and it got pounced on by a wolf, and all the "experts" (and alts of lanbotters) come out of the woodwork to tell them how it's their own damned fault, and don't expect any sympathy. "Why are you people posting about this again!" From: Sys Slade If you doubt that education is needed when it comes to selling land, here's the latest thread: /327/d5/178358/1.htmlYet another person who feels their land was "stolen" because of a basic mistake. Yet another place where tea and sympathy will do nothing to change anything. When did I say it wasn't necessary? I said I believe that LL needs to make it highly known, and really hammer it home. And yes, the latest thread. Funny that - ANOTHER one. But no, there's not a problem...

Morwen. So making a mistake while selling your land to a friend, and making a mistake at work, are analogous? Not in my world. Furthermore, your boss is not everyone's boss. And, a good boss IS capable of compassion, or he or she had better be, or they will find themslves without many employees and someone higher up the chain to answer to. I'm done here, as arguing with people who are incapable of empathy, and who try and self promote how smart they are at other people's expense is just not worth it.

you know, I think the issue here is not that someone made a mistake. The issue here is that before you can correct it some landbot swoops in and buys your land. My partner had it happen today, and the land was sold, quite literally, within seconds. If the landbots were not there, it could only happen if there was someone passing by saying: hey, good deal.
In that case you at least have the chance to correct your mistake. Now it is sold before you can even think about hitting cancel. And that is where the injustice is.

i don't agree with the OP stating this was a rip-off. people should be aware that when dealing with money they should be careful and ignoring pop-ups with warnings isn't very wise to do. when i buy something i count the money i'm handing over to the seller and when i sell i count the change i'm getting from the buyer. common sense applies to both rl and sl. there's even a sticky in this forum about how to transfer land and the warnings are there. so it was a mistake that could have easily be prevented. then again noone is perfect and mistakes can be made.
we live in a civilized society or at least i still try to keep that illusion. so i think it would be a matter of common decency if the op would be able to get his land back after explaining to the buyer what happened.
however i don't think LL should take extra measures to prevent this kind of thing from happening. we all have our responsibilities. be sure to know what you're doing before you're doing it.

My experience with a land bot
02-24-2008 16:11
Just today as a matter of fact my employer ran afoul of a land bot. Through a mistake with the payouts of group land the neighbor she was buying the rest of the sim from was not receiving the money my employer was paying for the land. So she sold the land back to her neighbor and set up the guide lines, "Put the land up for sale for 1L and I will buy it from you, then make a box that says 'for land sale etc etc' I'll pay that which will give you transaction history and the money. " The land went back to the original owner with no glitches. But as the original owner went to set the land to sell only to my employer for 1L lag happened (the same lag that makes the group list jump and you double click the wrong group or the lag that makes search jump so that you click on the wrong option.) one minute the owner saw it set for my employer then as she went to hit okay it reverted back to publicly for sale for 1L. The owner immediately saw the mistake and went back to correct it and set it to private sell but before she even had enough time to correct a bot "swooped" in and bought the land. My employer contacted lindens, and she was nicely told tough nuts and the most they could offer was to inform the landbot owners that it would be the decent thing to do to return the land because of the mistake. My employer and the original owner were given the proverbial shrug "oh well" from lindens. They tried to contact the owners of the groups only to find that the people in the group consisted of two bots and none with payment info on file and SURPRISE SURPRISE not one of them answered any ims from them. So the original owner is out the money, my employer is out the half of sim with the potential to get less than friendly neighbors. But you're right human error, lag error and bad business practices shouldn't be compensated for. Because everyone who has told the original poster "tough nuts" has never in their lives made a potentially or realized damaging mistake that they were regretful over and *gasp* angry about. So therefore, they have every right to get on their hypocritical soap boxes and expound upon how it's the owner of the lands fault.

I have made the same mistake and I still say tough nuts. I was lucky that the landbot runner was gracious enough to give it back to me, but I take full responsibility for my fault in checking the plot. Take some responsibility for it! Why didn't they use a specific person? Would 1L really have protected the purchase? Why, when you can do it for 0? Take responsibility for your actions. It is not LL's fault.

Maybe LL just needs to take out the convenience of the pulldown " anyone" make them type in "anyone" or "open market" yah that sounds like a hassle, but it would stop most of the mistakes, if you got to type in something anyway might as well type in the persons name... I think that at this point is is moot though, LL knows they got to purge landbots, they are slowly working on it though

i think a simple limit would do the trick, give it a 10min delay ?, or even better, if they don't list parcels for sale at L$1 or L$0 ?, its clearly not intended for everyone ?

I post this same paragraph about once every two weeks. Sadly, not enough people read this forum:
Never set your land to "anyone" unless your really want anyone to be able to buy it. Even if the person you intend to sell it to is standing right next to you and there is no one else on the sim. Landbots are faster than humans.

Regardless of how stupid this error was, land bots should be prohibited and LL should be responsible. This is nothing less then LL supplying a platform for corruption.

From: Mechant Boucher She put the parcel for sale for L$1, but forgot to choose a specific buyer (i.e. me). Then, a bot named "Mysore Masala" popped out of nowhere, immediatly bought it and put it back for sale for L$5038. at this point, all you can do is buy it for 5038 and get on with your life.

since 1957 I think
02-24-2008 19:35
The bots have been prowling for quite some time now. Doesnt matter how many, " are you sure? Are you really, really sure? Are you absolutely friggin 100 percent positive that you want to sell this to ANYBODY for a dollar?" warnings that pop up, there are gonna be folks who underestimate the bot concept. I think the warning needs to be rephrased to read, " IF YOU PROCEED TO SELL THIS LAND FOR A DOLLAR, A LANDBOT WILL INSTANTLY APPEAR IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE AND BUY IT FOR A DOLLAR BEFORE YOUR FIANCE CAN EVEN 'LEFT CLICK' HER MOUSE. PUT THE PERSONS NAME WHO YOU WISH TO SELL IT TO IN THE BOX BELOW, OR THE BOT WILL TAKE IT. ITS LIKE THE TERMINATOR, IT HAS NO MERCY. FOR REAL!" Those unfamiliar with bots think they can do the land transaction faster than it takes for somebody to find out about the cheap land and fly in to grab it. I had a 'land search button masher' fly in once (pre-bot) and scoff up some land that I was dividing for myself. He was quite pleased with himself that he was able to take advantage of my ignorance. And tho I surrounded the property on several sides with giant walls reading ' THANKS DOUG, EVER HEARD OF ETHICS?', ( http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspxid=76821&sort=Pictures.PictureID+desc&sim=Ravenglass) I had to buy my own land back from the prick.

Firstly, I also suggest asking for the land back. SOME botmasters will sell the land back if it's a mistake. However, I doubt eliminating L$1 sales are going to solve the problem. Sometimes a laggy sim or a laggy grid or just a missed typo can turn a parcel set for L$4,750 into one marked for L$475. I don't know the answer to this continually happening in SL, other eliminating bots altogether. Some unscrupulous barrons used to do this too, but at least then there was a person behind the avatar for LL to punish. Now with groups of bots and the way they can shuttle Lindens back and forth, it would be difficult to fine a bot or even its master/masters, without permabanning the botmaster and any and all bots. From: mcgeeb Gupte Maybe the landbot operator will sell back because its an obvious mistake. LL should do something about this and not allow 1L land sales to "anyone" and gray it out unless you specify a person's name. Is that so hard to ask? People are going to continue to make this mistake unless something gets fixed while the people that bought the land get a quick 20 dollars.

But don't forget to AR the bot! LL has been making some positive changes these past few weeks. Perhaps we'll finally get that land buy CAPTCHA or other antibot measures LL has been promising for months to bring in to curb bots, but hasn't bothered to implement. From: 3Ring Binder at this point, all you can do is buy it for 5038 and get on with your life.

From: Sunspot Pixie There is still a human point of contract that has to deal with the info the scanning software reveals. There really isn't. I work for an electronic trading company and we have programs automatically buying and selling stocks (actually options) all day long with barely any human interaction at all. Sometimes a human or another computer out there makes a mistake and they get "ripped off" for millions of dollars. You can go whining to the exchange to see if they bust the trade but normally there's nothing you can do.

Having done a dozen or so land transactions between groups in the last week, I would like anyone who says the system is fine to click a piece of their land and put it for sale to themselves, buy it and repeat this 5 times then come back to us and tell us honesty they didn't feel risk or worry of losing their land doing so, I was freaking paranoid, it was stressing me out, to be super dooper careful, I kept paging back and rechecking, I didn't fell comfortable at any time transacting any amount of land this way. A couple of time I found I had lost concentration during the process, phone rang etc, and realised too late that I hadn't triple checked. Lucky I had done it right. Something needs to be done, perhaps make it default to themselves or as someone suggested a big "YOU COULD LOSE YOUR LAND TO A LANDBOT!" in red letters warning at the top of the confirm window. With saftey edging flashing. Also not allowing $1 sales to "anyone". And face it who would that hurt other than those who prey on peoples mistakes? Imagine if in RL you were handing transfering property to your children, and you missed writting their name on a crucial page of the transfer document and the temp secretary at the solicitors wrote their name in and said "bad luck, lands all mine now" What about if you parked your car at the service station left the keys in the ignition so you could let your wife drive and while you were both out of the car some guy just dived in locked the doors and declared the car his because you left the keys in it for anyone ?

Let me rephrase as I might not have been clear in one of my earlier posts. While I think making it impossible for land to sell to ANYONE at L$1 won't do much for overall losses of land to bots due to mistakes, I support it being done. Anything that can prevent that is a good thing, but I don't see LL doing it. I agree on your comparisons as well, it's just a matter of LL doing something which they haven't for months. Maybe we'll get lucky with this new leaf LL seems to have turned over recently. the way i see it, a person buying/selling land should be adult enough to research the pitfalls, and make accomodations to prevent this from happening as they go along. if they are selling, that means they alraedy bought the land. if they don't know how it works by that point, they get what they deserve. lag issues is BS too. you can read your screen and see the zero missing jsut liek everyone else. you are all adults here, this pissy whining about being ripped off is BS. if you buy something from a vendor, and your product is not delivered, then i can see where whining, complaining and ARing might come in. selling land at L$1 to a landbot is jsut pure stupidity on the part of the landseller, and there is no place for empathy in that business transaction. dumb is rebutted by smart. welcome to survival.
