From: Chris Norse Undeclared war in Pakistan. A "surge" in Afganistan. That enough?
Not to mention destroying health care in the US and killing what is left of the economy with Cap and Trade. Not really, he's stuck with cleaning up messes that should have either been finished five years ago, or we shouldn't be facing at all. At this point, he's the janitor, Bush is the kid who flushed cherry bombs down all the toilets. We'll see how history judges them.

From: Ian Nider This filter won't wash, Aussies hate it, left or right hate it.
I hate it too. I'll be letting them know. How dare they assume I need protection from porn, and how dare they assume to know what I spend my time in SL doing.

From: Dante Tucker Just do what LL does. Talk about education in SL, and accessibility for the disabled. I pointed out how 2 of their own companies has interests in SL namely Big pond and ABC so rather odd if they were allowed to participate in SL and yet now they want us to stop

From: Rene Erlanger So is this Australian story true then....or exaggerated? A bit of both. It's true that the Australian govt has been floating this "Great Australian Firewall" idea for a while now. However, note the exact wording of Conroy's quote: it's a PLAN, and under that plan, stuff WILL BE blah blah blah, not IS blah blah blah. It isn't in place yet, and they're still discussing and debating it. There's a lot of opposition to it and it's by no means a done deal. Hell, the original "black list" of banned websites that were talked about last year was leaked a while ago, and sites on that list are still accessable from an Australian ISP. (I checked a couple just now.) If Conroy gets all that he wants in this plan put in place it will be awful, and I guess my store will be dead in the water if I can't access SL. But that's a big IF. Personally, I doubt it'll happen in the way that he's talking about it. Most likely there'll be some watered-down-so-far-it's-totally-ineffectual variation put into place a few years down the track, if anything.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Actually the story is not quite right. Cato AR'd Ian for swearing every other post and Talarus for being terminally boring, so SL decided they might as well cut off all avatars wth ISPs based in Australia. Pep (Nina is looking to migrate apparently ) What? Us Aussies have totally got our **** together! 'Stoned wallabies make crop circles' http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8118257.stm

At this point, he's the janitor, Bush is the kid who flushed cherry bombs down all the toilets. He's been the Janitor for the past several years, along with the rest of his party who controlled Congress. Niether side can point fingers at the other on this. They are all responsible, going back to Slick Willie, who stuffed used tampons down the toilet before GW pulled the handle. They are all to blame, every single one of them.

From: Brenda Connolly No country is above this anymore. Politicians...of all types have become out of control...out of touch, arrogant, and concerned only with their own self perpetuation...they're all no good, every single one of them. I don't care what party they belong to. Where?

From: Jesse Barnett History teaches us that recession/depression = oppression. During times of crisis, governments decide that self-determination needs to be banned and that adults can no longer make decisions on their own. Unfortunately it is just not governments that adopt these attitudes, who would have believed the crap that LL is doing now? Looking again at history and we can also see that unfortunately it is going to get worse before it gets better and none of this is going to pass until the economy rebounds. You said a mouthful right there. Turkey? YouTube is banned here - as well as Geocities. By those yardsticks, I'm astounded I can still log into SL. I would have thought installing the client on my 'puter would be a criminal offense by now. All the same, I can't believe this of even the nuttiest aussie. Shurely shome mishtake? From: Pserendipity Daniels ... I don't have a criminal record ... Unless you count Men At Work's 'Down Under'. Ouch. Now that's really testing the bounds of good taste.

It is a mistake, our current PM is very swayed by populism, I'd bet money it won't happen.

crazy conspiracy theory occurred to me this morning - that Linden Lab knew about this plan a while ago, and Zindra is an attempt to compromise with the Aussie government. Maybe a way of letting Aus users stay but preventing them access to the Adult continent.
Seriously, I don't expect this to go ahead. At least, it won't go ahead without a fight. Australian owned businesses (Azure Islands is one of them) bring in a lot of $$ and I doubt LL will want to let that go. Even Big Pond, Australia's own biggest ISP, has a major presence in SL.

From: Windsweptgold Wopat Im an aussie and this is news to me but ill look into it and see what i can find out. I have emailed the minister and will await a response That is what I was hoping when I posted it here as the press is like LL and you can't trust a word they say. Also as was said the first URL says its a done deal and the other, which I was more inclined to believe says its not as I read it. If it is true its unbelievable that a country like Australia could even think of doing it, though you could expect it from China or Saudi or a country like that. Thanks for taking the time to find out

From: Tiffy Vella Definately news to me, and I thought we were way above such knee jerk reactions. We have a very large presence in SL, and I joined on the same day that the ABC opened it's island. Imagine losing the ABC presence here...Pondex.....plus the many Aussie creators, some of who do derive their income from SL.. (It's already a horrible day...ick..not this too...runs off to investigate this latest stupidity....) IF and i hope a big IF this went ahead I think it would be a very sad day indeed not just for Australians but a major blow for many freedoms we all take for granted.

Not a conspiracy theory at all. My original post in this thread kinda got lost in all the Obama bashing (I'm kinda sick of thread hijacking, but oh well - it's on page 2 if anyone is interested). LL was aware of the possibility of this law, another one that is coming up for vote this fall in the U.S., the various anti-porn and violence laws being passed in the UK and the general trend toward censorship across the globe. I have, and will continue to commend LL in their efforts to self-regulate. While the plan may not be perfect and while I may not agree with all of their decisions here, LL is at least being proactive enough to have viable options and means of compliance in place - before the laws actually hit the books. As near as I can tell, once everyone with adult content is in Zindra or on a private adult island, SL will easily fall under the MA15+ game rating in Australia and Aussie users will simply be unable to log into the Adult areas (should this thing pass in the first place). Still - if you are in Australia - the post earlier in this thread with a call to contact your officials (it has a few names for you too) is definitely a good plan. Good luck, but either way, I suspect I will at least be able to continue meeting up with my FIO's (Friends in Oz) for many years to come - even if we have to hop to another sim to shake hands.
