From: someone
The Australian Minister for Censorship has today confirmed what I’ve been reporting for nearly two years: online adult games including Second Life will be banned in Australia.

A spokesman for Censorship Minister Stephen “Goebbels” Conroy confirmed to Fairfax newspapers that “under the filtering plan, it will be extended to downloadable games, flash-based web games and sites which sell physical copies of games that do not meet the MA15+ standard.” In Australia, the MA15+ rating means that the content is restricted to those aged 15 and above. Australia does not have a R 18+ or similar rating for computer games, with all adult games automatically being classified as RC (Refused Classification.)

That was more an exclamation than a reference to world of warcraft, but you may be right there :)

There is a very large Australian presence in SL. I find this story a little hard to believe. Minister of Censorship?

I also never thought of it as a game, but that would be a hard sell for politicians and law makers, I'm sure.

I hope it is a hoax of some sort. Censorship is an ugly thing. The human race MUST outgrow this primitive need to control others.

news.google.com has a lot of feeds about but its going to need a good read and maybe someone from Oz to comment on the Australian government and its censorship deal, but they are hard because of the classification rating system, so possibly it is true, I just thought I would introduce the thread I cannot vouch for its truth from Holland ;)

That's not his official title, it would seem.

Actually the story is not quite right. Cato AR'd Ian for swearing every other post and Talarus for being terminally boring, so SL decided they might as well cut off all avatars wth ISPs based in Australia.

I hope for my Aussie friends this is not right or can be worked out. I have a dear Aussie friend who is confined to a wheelchair and has very much enjoyed the freedom SL has given him.

I wouldn't be surprised if our Dictator-in-Chief banishes it in the US as well. After all, he's appointing an "Internet Czar" (I dislike the reference to my name), today has stated that in the new health initiative *HE* will *PERMIT* us to keep our Dr's. The government is supposed to work for US...who the hell does he think he is to *LET* me keep my Dr.?????

I'm in a mood today with the celebrity deaths and an idiot who has a restraining order from his girlfriend/lover/whatever who lives in the apt. next to me practically banging the door down and screaming obscenities earlier.

The first article linked to here acts as if this is a done deal.

The Gamespy one talks about filtering web sites - but it's not a done deal and nothing has been decided for sure as to whether second life would be included. This line is telling:
From: someone

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy as saying that the filter would cover "computer games such as Web-based flash games and downloadable games, if a complaint is received and the content is determined by ACMA to be Refused Classification."

Thanks to the Linden's horrible [sic] plan to separate adult content and require extra qualification to be able to enter SL, the PG and Mature areas should easily be able to classify under Australia's MA15+ rating. If you have an Aussie billing address, you won't be able to get to my shop (don't worry, I deliver), but thanks to those evil Lindens who "have no foresight nor ability to do anything right" [sic], we should be able to stay in contact with our friends in Oz for years to come.

I am a bit non-plussed. It was my understanding Oz was above this sort of thing, though grant you i have limited knowledge. Have a friend that might be in a position to comment from better than average knowledge- checking...

I am a dyed in the wool Democrat, I voted for Obama and I like him, I also knew that whoever was the President now, no matter which party, was screwed. That having been said, I do not like some of the things he is doing. I do not like that the upper echelon of the Justice Department is now filled with ex-RIAA lawyers. That same internet czar has also stated that he does not believe in internet privacy. I do not like that smoking cigarettes is heading towards Prohibition. Tax on roll your own tobacco just jumped from $1 a lb to $20 a lb. While at the same time there is serious talk now of legalizing marijuana? Go figure! Sure reminds me of Prohibition during the Great Depression!

This would not surprise me if this does pass in Australia. History teaches us that recession/depression = oppression. During times of crisis, governments decide that self-determination needs to be banned and that adults can no longer make decisions on their own. Unfortunately it is just not governments that adopt these attitudes, who would have believed the crap that LL is doing now? Looking again at history and we can also see that unfortunately it is going to get worse before it gets better and none of this is going to pass until the economy rebounds.
