From: Ceka Cianci it would be nice if there was a way to actually be able to get free medical care that was any good..but it's not gonna be free..someone will have to pay for it.. just happens to be the ones that are still on the edge of losing their homes at the moment.. it's not gonna dent the rich one bit but it will the ones that have been hurting the most from all this bank bull crap.. lets just hit them some more cause it's in every ones best interest but theirs..
they are going back to work at 40% less earnings than before they were unemployed..how the heck are they gonna be able to pay for insurance for those that can't afford it when the working class won't be able to afford it themselves.. all this is doing is making more poor and answering nothing to fix the poor getting into a better situation..
in the end the rich will just keep getting richer and the poor population will just keep getting poorer and more populated..
we need to concentrate on becoming a more self sufficient country like before rather than one that is dependent at every turn..
the honest truth ..we need to get off the two party system and bring up some parties that will actually do some good for the people of the country..cause the two there now are no different than each other.. All they do is figure out different ways to waste our money. They are both pretty much useless.

From: Chris Norse Of course if it wasn't for us "Western imperialists" most of the peoples in the world would be living in the stone age. Just like with Haiti today, they can't build a society so who do they call to pull their chestnuts out of the fire, us evil Western imperialists. And then you come in and blow up their magic trees!

From: Void Singer .... then again some of that same arrogance was in Orlando's "fixing someone"...
Well, political discussion aside.....as someone with redneck ties....I would love to hear further analysis on what exactly needs to be "fixed" by someone who has lived half their life on a message board or virtual world.

/me reads Orlando's first post through a second time, and beams with admiration. Wow, what's not to like about someone whose name apparently combines a hommage to Virginia Woolf with a tip of the hat to Cervantes? And who cites neoclassical aesthetic theory? All of this, and a trenchant political analysis too. Orlando, if you are male, I may be in love. Hell, if you aren't male, I may still be in love. One thing though: don't dis the Norse. His politics make me want to run screaming from the room, and he is (of course) dead wrong about Haiti ('cuz any nation built from the utterly inhuman slave trade SHOULD be grateful to the West, right? ), but he's smart, and, more importantly, fair-minded and sweet. Otherwise, you go girl . . . or boy. Or whatever.

You're in love with someone who has decided that a whole category of people (who they obviously know nothing about).....needs to be "fixed?"

kk, I see the problem. It was an unfortunate turn of phrase. That's all. I'm certain of it . . .

You're quite right, the "fixing" thing was extremely rude. I think it conveyed the full measure of my disapprobation without resorting to expletives, but it was certainly in an arrogant-put-down kind of way, rather than in a sweet-and-reasoning kind of way. ::considers:: Mostly I'm a lot more patient than that, but stuff that smacks of racism, homophobia or sexism does tend to push my "Oh hell no" buttons, and the attitude towards the "Stone Age" non-Westerners tipped me over into Smite rather than Discuss. ...I'm not sure where Mickey gets the "fix a whole category of people" thing from, though - hell, I'm not even sure what the category is he has in mind. I was referring specifically to Chris, as Chris came across in that post. ::thinks:: Oh! Is it the rednecks? No, I wasn't proposing doing anything to All Rednecks. I'm not American, so my understanding of the term is purely based on the way it's used in your media; fwiw, the only guy I know in RL who's from a trailerpark & would describe himself as a redneck is adorable. But he's also living in Asia.. The environment I'm from myself is the UK equivalent of a redneck town, and is brimming over with people who are actively proud of their ignorance, their parochialism and their small-mindedness - people who count it a point of pride that they don't venture outside the borders of the county, and think that everywhere outside "the tarn" is shit. I really don't have much sympathy with that mindset. From: someone Well, political discussion aside.....as someone with redneck ties....I would love to hear further analysis on what exactly needs to be "fixed" by someone who has lived half their life on a message board or virtual world. ...you know, I can understand you finding my post arrogant, but you're certainly chock-full of assumptions about how I've been living my life. Certainly I *have* been actively involved in online discussions for a decade or so - initially via The Guardian's website, my newspaper of choice - but, ah, I *do* have a profession, and I do leave the house and have, you know, an offline life. Startlingly. And indeed, upon reflection, it's the very way that I've been living my life that made Chris's comment strike me as untenable. My work currently has me living in Asia, where I've spent the past four years, and prior to that I was in North Africa for 3 years; in the preceding years I've lived and worked in various other parts of Europe and North America - generally not in first world countries. Which is precisely what made Chris's contempt for the "Stone Age" non-Westerners strike me as untenable. I'm happy to believe, though, that Chris is brighter and more compassionate than that post made him/her look - I don't know them from Adam, and would prefer to think the best of people, on balance. Scylla - spot on with the name analysis, m'dear! (Although I met someone in SL who assumed it was a reference to the place - embarrassingly, I'd actually forgotten it WAS a place. I suppose a fair few people must think of Orlando Bloom as a name on a par with Brooklyn Beckham, in that case, whereas it's always put me in mind of Woolf and Joyce.) ...crap, I have more things to say, especially about Void's post, but I must get my ass out the door to work. Later, good people!

Where did that come from? What sentence, paragraph or words did you get that from? From: Orlando Quixote

!
I got that....because you said: From: Orlando Quixote
EDITED TO ADD Chris, I was on the brink of responding to your post seriously when I saw your little tag line self-descriptor. I conclude that you're a troll, although I suppose it's still possible that you're sincere, and simply blessed with neither heart nor wit nor education. Either way, I rather doubt that I'm up to the job of fixing someone quite that broken via a posting board discussion.
.
I took that to mean, that based on 3 words, you decided you were speaking to a troll without heart, without wit, or without education. 3 words in the tagline. Is that directed toward Loud People? Arrogant People? or Rednecks? which? From: Orlando Quixote
Oh! Is it the rednecks? No, I wasn't proposing doing anything to All Rednecks. ok, so you got your redneck definition from the media. I got mine from down the street, from real people, who call themselves rednecks......which definition do you want to use? Are you interested in learning? Or do you want to keep that stereotype in your head? I really don't have much sympathy with your mindset. But some days I preach tolerance....so will have to suck it up for now. And leave Chris out of it. If he wanted to respond to you, he would. I am talking specifically about your reference to rednecks.

From: someone Where did that come from? What sentence, paragraph or words did you get that from? It came from Chris's post, Mickey. It came from these two sentences: From: someone Of course if it wasn't for us "Western imperialists" most of the peoples in the world would be living in the stone age. Just like with Haiti today, they can't build a society so who do they call to pull their chestnuts out of the fire, us evil Western imperialists. The post struck me as thoroughly offensive; the tagline suggested to me (perhaps mistakenly) that the writer enjoyed offending, and wasn't open to discussion. From: someone And leave Chris out of it. If he wanted to respond to you, he would. I am talking specifically about your reference to rednecks. And the problem, you see, is that I never actually referred to rednecks. Awkward, I know, but there it is. So although I can understand that you feel awkward about me insisting that my post to Chris was, you know - to Chris...them's the breaks, my friend. I WAS quite specifically addressing Chris. Not you, not your neighbours, not his neighbours - just Chris, on the basis of Chris's words.
