From: Brenda Connolly It seems it would be a technical hardship. Am I correct in beliving our Avatar names are the sole link to our account, meaning that Avi is connected to whatever RL info LL has on file for us? yeah unless LL deleted your RL info .. people would be able to use old accounts and LL would assume it was you doing it. Meaning if the transfer was done without LL involved you could get the account you didnt sell Banned too, since LL could ban "Mrs X and all her accounts" instead of just some avatar.

I think Colette's 3rd "could be the reason", it probably it. They think an older account will give them more prestige or something.....rofl

I'm still wondering why it's so friggin' important to have pre-2007 accounts for RP purposes! That just boggles my mind, frankly, because there is no legit reason to need older accounts for that purpose. It's a game of "let's pretend," so it wouldn't matter the age of the account.
My thoughts on why someone would want a pre-2007 account involve griefing. No insult intended, but it IS the a reason most hackers go for the older accounts, along with the money. People are naturally suspicious of 'young' accounts and are more likely to watch them like a hawk.. but an older account is a sign that someone aren't likely to be griefers, simply because they've existed this long without being perm-banned. Some use this feeling of comfort to their purposes.

From: White Hyacinth Giving you the password of an avatar is against TOS. It doesn't seem to be agains the ToS anymore: "At the time your Account is opened, you must select a password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and are responsible for any harm resulting from your disclosure, or authorizing the disclosure of, your password or from use by any person of your password to gain access to your Account or Account Name. At no time should you respond to an online request for a password other than in connection with the log-on process to the Service. Your disclosure of your password to any other person is entirely at your own risk." The ToS just puts password sharing at your own risk and recommends against it. I know--that's not consistant with the MotD that LL puts up on the start up screen every so often.

From: Colette Meiji I can think of three, except for the names thing I dont think they matter much-
1 - since the last names actually rotated rapidly, pre-2007 accounts tend to have "Normal" names and not AOL speak.
2- Acounts before a certain date get a WHOLE 50L a week stipend for life.
3- You could pretend youve been around for a while and thus SOME people might consider you more influential/ knowledgeable. I imagine #3 is a distinct possibility, but I have actually seen other people (on the second_lifers LiveJournal group) asking for older accounts for the stipend. I would assume they'd like the paid account's one, but I don't know this. Mari

I am normally not cynical here on the forums, but this smells very fishy to me. I hope that Linden Lab thinks very hard before granting a request like this, for any amount of money. I seriously doubt that they would transfer an account for the purposes of "role play". Moreover, I suspect the OP has not actually petitioned Linden Lab for this, and has merely realized the futility of making such a request on this forum.
I can think of no form of role play that would be enhanced by having an earlier birth date while sacrificing any control over your name. That doesn't mean such a form of role play does not it exist. However, the OP has declined to answer this question. Therefore it is reasonable for us to speculate.
The only purpose that I can imagine for purchasing an older birth date would be to fool people into thinking you have been here longer than you have. Longevity suggests legitimacy and engenders trust that you simply have not earned. Now it's true that having an older birthday does not mean you are an upright citizen. But it's even more true that griefing and money scams are not generally done on accounts born two years ago.
To the OP I would simply ask again, if your purposes are innocent and merely role play, please tell us about this form of role play so that all suspicions can be assuaged. On the other hand, perhaps your objectives aren't entirely sinister. Perhaps you just wish to buy a bit of respect. To that I would suggest ... stick around, behave, contribute, invest and earn your reputation like the rest of us.
And to Linden Lab I would suggest ... identity transfer of any kind should only be permitted in the rarest of circumstances, and only with considerable just cause. Role play, no matter how innocuous, is not just cause.

1. Why is everyone so concerned? I did expect negative reactions, but not too many either.
2. Last names change with time and we would like some of the names that are no longer available for one.
3. We are also interested in the birthdate for the appeal it will give to some. If we make new avatars (July 2007), people won't respect them!
4. We never said the name is not important, it is! But for some of the avatars it is less important then the date of birth. We already have several from 2007. We want different birthdates, different names and are now looking for profiles older than 2007.
5. We don't want people's active accounts, but there are thousands that are inactive. I see no problem with asking for those.
6. We don't care about this silly stipend.
7. We are not griefers. And if we were hackers we'd simply hack older accounts, no?
8. I have not been able to get hold of a helper to inform me better on this.
9. Now I'd appreciate anyne coming forward with an older account, someone more positive?

Persephone, I do not decline to answer anything. I just don't live on this messageboard to refresh it every five seconds. I hope my previous post answers your questions. What makes you so eager to accuse people of things?
If I was a griefer or a hacker I think I'd know better ways to attack or grief people, no? Well, it makes sense to me.

If your fellow Residents don't see any compelling reason you should be able to do this, do you really think Lindens will? It might be be different if you wanted to take over some large business which brought people and funds into Second Life, but your reasons for doing this all seem to amount to 'because we want to' and I just don't see LL going along with that.

From: JamesT Bailey 3. We are also interested in the birthdate for the appeal it will give to some. If we make new avatars (July 2007), people won't respect them! James, this is the entire problem. Having an earlier birth date will not engender respect from your role play friends because they are also buying earlier birth dates. What you are trying to do is fool other people into respecting you. And this is wrong. I am sorry, but you should earn respect the hard way, not try to buy it.

What makes you so eager to accuse people of things? It actually doesn't James. So I will ask it again. Can you tell us why you want people, who are not a part of your role play community, to think you have been here in Second Life for longer than you have?

Respect isn't given because of a birthdate and/or a name.
Respect is earned by your actions.
RP with your name as it is and in time, people will either respect you for what you stand for or they won't.

I finally got hold of a helper. His name is Tsu Goodliffe and he told me it is NOT against the rules. So can we please stop the legal discussion. I'm trying to find someone who can help me with this, not accuse me of things without even knowing me.
Thanks.

From: JamesT Bailey His name is Tsu Goodliffe Most helpers are volunteers...you need to talk to someone with Linden as a last name before you can be sure it's OK.

Chill, James. People here tend to ask questions, and getting defensive will just make eyebrows go higher.

I asked for help and I keep getting attacked and accused of things. Oh no no no, honeychile', this is /so/ not attacked. People want to know how an older DOB will assist your RP... so far you haven't answered that question, despite it being a reasonable one.

From: JamesT Bailey OK, please give me a name I can contact. Like Coyote said, go to the Support page of the site, log into the Portal at the bottom and submit a ticket. That's the official pathway to the Lindens.

For the last time:
Not everyone involved can play with his or her first account. If we make them a new one they will not be respected and will be insulted for noobs by people like you. If we get an older birthdate for them they will be taken serious.
Also we want some names that are no longer available to make these characters stand out. One of the main issues is that they stand out.
Respect is not only earned. People hit on you if your avatar is new.
I have answered all questions again and again, if you're not satisfied, sorry. Now please leave me alone and let people who DO want to help help.
Can anyone get me a Linden name that I can contact with my question? The helper said it was legal.

Silly wabbitt....
Older DOB's don't automatically give you respect...
There are enough of us with alts with younger DOB's that know that it's not the birth date in someone's profile that weighs against their maturity, but their actions.
