Tinfoil goes mainstream. I'm very surprised to see The Australian publishing works of fiction.

Actually there is something very serious about all this, and no, its not about terrorism (SL as a terrorism platform? Then so is *ANY* conferencing and meeting package. OH MY GAWD! Bin Ladin has a virtual white board! We're doomed, DOOMED I tell you!)

I've been hitting google news at work lately when I get bored, and there's been an increasing meme - no real threat, no evidence, just talk - among conservative talking heads about the terrorism danger from Second Life. What we're seeing is the right wing echo chamber stirring the pot, looking for yet another "dangerous thing" *TM* to frighten us with. Laugh all you like, but within the next month or two you're going to see more of these articles, and they'll be using this piece of crap from Murdoch's Aussie rag as supporting evidence. (that's another tactic of the echo chamber - early in the ramp up "credible" reporters write up total fabrications which are then used as source material for articles further up the food chain. Because the early stuff doesn't get a lot of attention they can lay the groundwork for reporting and punditry by more "reputable" reporters and pundits who incorporate the earlier work as part of the story, thinking its been fact checked).

It'll probably start circulating in the right wing blogosphere for a couple months before it surfaces on Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. From there its a short trip to FOX, and then to Congress - whose aids will already have been briefed about the earlier issues with kiddie porn and gambling. In fact, a blog search for "Second Life" "terrorism" is already showing the insidious, intended effect of the story.

Now then, I think a good question is: who is behind this? This kind of attention is often generated by PR firms whose clients want to force a piece of legislation or tax credit their way, or want to increase their share of the market by imposing onerous costs on their competitors in order to stay legal. SL has already shown its not "corporate friendly" and that the people running the show have much to say as to their level of professionalism (their "the next iPod/the next Steve Jobs" moment of glory lasted precisely 15 minutes). This makes SL much too risky to define the "new web". Of course, as f***'ed up as they are, there doesn't *have* to be an industry group orchestrating this...

In SL people create their own characters, known as avatars, and live an alternative life, buying goods, real estate and living in a community of more than eight million people from across the world.

8 million? Since when???

From: someone
law enforcement agencies believe some of those behind the Second Life attacks are home-grown Australian jihadists who are rehearsing for strikes against real targets

HAHAHAHAHAHA

This is a real Australian news site. Seems like we have nothing better to report on down here.

Couldn't they do the same using Skype instead of SL voice? Better still, forget SL altogether and just use Skype.
Yes, but the nice thing about SL is multimedia - they could, theoretically, show a video in here and discuss it in the privacy of someone's land. As for "training" in the traditional sense, no - the virtual griefer terrorist is a ridiculous concept. But hey, jihad knows no boundaries does it.... but seriously, the kind of training - indoctrination, rather - can be accomplished in here with a personal touch that can't be had by just using a faceless skype.

A multi-user virtual world is useful for practicing certain types of real world group activity. That activity could be something like emergency response practice, which has been done in Second Life, or it could be used to practice creating an emergency. Various government militaries use virtual worlds for training. Second Life's extremely simple building system works in it's favor for use by a group that might not have team of folks skilled in more complex 3D programs.

A closed secure system like Qwaq or Sun's MPK20 might be a better choice for terrorists and other aggressor organizations such as, umm government militaries. It should be possible to export Google map data and perhaps some of the user supplied 3D building models from the Google format into forms that some virtual worlds can use.

It would be mighty annoying to have your terrorism planning session invaded by flexi-prim penis monsters.

"A surviving terrorist of the first terrorist attack using SL trained operatives was heard to say: 'It made no sense. People moved so fluidly, no one paused long enough for me to aim. No one told me RL cage guns were so heavy. And when the cops came, my sheild didn't rez and I got shot - I didn't know cops had sheild-breaking guns! When I saw we had failed, I couldnt' fly away.'"
"And then when I died, I didn't get teleported home."

This is just one of those aftershocks from the initial quake known as Second Life. Pretty weak one IMHO.

Is this a joke web site? Or is this web site a joke?

What's scary is that I could believe either...

Nope. The "story" is in the print edition of the newspaper. It's a Murdoch newspaper.

/me declares JIHAD on all terrorists in Second Life.

Now, where are my roadside bombs?

They are all planted at sim borders, thats why you are supposed to slow down before you cross one or you end up getting the car stuck in the ground due to invisible roadside bombs, or worse, you crash and nobody knows what happened to you!

Since when does Toyota "test" their products in SL? the physics engine is pretty much trash for any kind of auto testing.

Well, Some one might brag their Landrover did the Camel Safari unscathed, but then you can bragg your Landcruiser crossed a sim boundry intact (if they ever make any vehicle this good of course) ................. :)

I hear it is the terrorists who are setting up all the ad farms, to finance their nefarious plots and demoralize the infidels at the same time!

And when they're not out setting up rotating ad poles their hanging out in the sex clubs, studying really studying the poledancers. Watch out for the ones with the beards...

Pole dancers with beards? Oh, you mean 'down under'... but I thought they all shaved.

I can see it now...an army of penis tossing terrorists...'quick toss your penis at that soldier'!!

Please turn in your detachable penile equipment to Linden Labs (or me) as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Maybe already mentioned, but Reuters had a similar, but far less "sensationalist", article some weeks ago:

http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2007/07/12/alarm-bells-ring-again-about-virtual-terrorism/

________________________________

== Alarm bells ring — again — about virtual terrorism ==

"Scary reports of terrorism and money laundering in Second Life are nothing new. And the threat is certainly more than just hypothetical: Linden Lab has been culling old accounts due to fears of fraud, and Reuters has learned that Chief Financial Officer John Zdanowski is planning to talk tomorrow about stolen credit cards that were used to buy Linden dollars.

"But this week’s Economist has an otherwise well-thought out article about cyber-jihad with an inexcusably vague assertion:

Inevitably, experts say, jihadists have also started to create “residents” in the virtual world of Second Life.

"Really? Is it inevitable that we will one day find Al-Qaeda in Second Life? Or just that “experts” will pontificate about the possibility without producing any evidence?"

________________________________

It's interesting that they credit LL's culling of old accounts, not to optimizing the database or freeing up names etc, as to discourage fraud/money laundering.

Makes me also wonder a bit more about that post a few weeks back where someone was asking for old unused accounts to use "for roleplaying reasons" ... which of course made no sense to any of us.

Some RP sims require a minimum avatar age, maybe that could be the reason?

Back on topic.....

"Terrorism" in SL is so ridiculous it's downright ricockulous.

This is a very good point, and the fact that the article is apparently in a Murdoch newspaper does make me wonder. I think we should pay close attention to where this 'meme' starts to spread.

No need to worry about terrorists. The Catholics are coming to save us!

From: someone
ROME — Catholic missionaries have always trekked to dangerous parts of the Earth to spread the word of God. Now they are being encouraged to go into the virtual realm of "Second Life" to save virtual souls.

In an article in Rome-based Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, academic Antonio Spadaro urged fellow Catholics not to be scared of entering the virtual world which may be fertile ground for new converts wishing to better themselves.

Religion is the oldest form of virtual reality.

Does that make religion in SL 'virtual virtual reality'?
