Thank you, Marty, for your original post and subsequent ones. My entire professional career has been in IT in some way or another: administrator, web monkey, and far too many years working at a help desk. I suppose that perspective adds to my understanding of what LL is doing. It is absolutely amazing what they've done and are doing, and to this day when I think about what all is going on "under the hood," I'm in awe.

I see many people in "resident answers" who appear angry .. bitter and have a constant sour taste in thier mouths. This can either be that they have personally suffered at the hands of SL OR they are particular nasty people who enjoy causing distress to other people i.e Forum griefers.

Wired ran an article about certain types of official game forum people not too long ago. My favorite bit from the article is the intro:
From: Wired:Complainers of the World Unite
If you play an online game that you enjoy, there's one surefire way to spoil the experience: read the forums on the official site. There you will find a vast underworld of lost souls keening their misery onto your screen. A game you thought was entertaining, well-balanced and attractive will be torn apart before your very eyes and pronounced lacking in every conceivable way.

It doesn't matter that the complainers spend as much time on the game as you do, and probably more. While they may disagree on the nature of the flaws, they are united in agreement that whatever those flaws may be, they are unforgivable.

I keep this mind when ever I visit the forums.

So, growing pains, bugs, and lost forum souls notwithstanding -- Thank you Linden Labs. I understand, I think, what y'all are trying to do. I understand that not every bug can be fixed at every release. I understand that not all things are perfect. I also understand that SL is not a replacement for my First Life, but a happy addition to it. Thanks for the year (so far) that I've enjoyed in your metaverse.

Great quote, my favourite line is the one above.

It is almost like the forums are an emotional and drama magnifier. Perspective goes out of the window. Which makes me wonder if there are any psychology studies on the interactions of such forums, if not, any psych students out there, possible topic for a thesis/dissertation?

Yep, Bodger, that bit is worthy of putting in one's sig line. I wonder about the psychology too. I think I'll ask my RL partner, who's about to get his PhD in that area, what he thinks.

Marty, don't forget blog comments in that. They've gotten as bad as certain parts of the forum.

I don't think they even bothered to open the comments for the rolling restart blog entry.

Not surprising really when you have such threads as this:

Am confessing I haven't read any but a few of the posts up until now, but just want to say...

...The Lindens are doing the best they can with a crazy, bleeding-edge technology that is growing like topsy and is full of big (and often umpleasant) surprises for everyone at every turn and gets drastically changed regularly because it is entering an unknown on-line universe where everything is different from what people have supposed until now.

This is a revolution-in-the-making of the Internet.

For certain, let them know of everything that is going wrong, because THEY NEED TO KNOW.

And if individuals or LL as a whole does something obviously wrong, let them know about that too, because they need to know about that as well.

But for crying out loud, give them a break. They are Columbus, crossing the Atlantic on the Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria. They are not Virgin Airlines flying you over in six hours with reclining seats, on-board entertainment, and cute stewardesses.

To LL, in general, and with a (very) few exceptions: YOU GO, GUYS.
