Oh thank goodness, I thought it was just me.

haha ditto!

The object I have seen is cone shaped, but it's a single cone lacking any colour (looks a bit like a black & white xmas tree). God knows how long I wasted trying to catch one in edit lol...once I had I finally caught one, they only remain in edit for about 1s (with no info displayed) before zipping off on their journey round a multi sim eliptical orbit. Weird.

Who we gonna call?

I have them too, in Tupi. I have 'caught' a couple and they are both called 'Lighthouse beam', there is another just off my land in Black which looks the same.

Bloody annoying they are too.

Oh, and btw, it is easier to see info about them if you are already in edit mode before you start to try and catch them. I was able to get the owners names this way. It looks like the scripts controlling the various lighthouses have gone wrong since the update, however my own lighthouse (just a common freebie one from when I was new) seems to be functioning as normal.

Also have one in our area, it looks like a sign. Today I went land shopping and saw a number of other ones circling various areas. And I also only started noticing them after that last wonderous update.

Wow, I've been seeing these as well, I hadn't told anybody for fear of being called crazy. You don't know how relieved I am that it's not just me.

I was thinking it's a glitch with my video card.

I have lights, small fires and a large flat object moving through land I'm building on for a friend. If I disable camera limits and set draw distance to 512, I can see the items flying very fast across at least 4-sims.

I managed to stop one of the flats, and it does indeed belong to a club in the next sim, it's part of a large rotating sign. I need to check if other people are seeing it as well, before contacting the club owner.

I also see some objects that appear on our land, that my friend doesn't see. I can't return them or delete them. Also, if I try to sit on them, SL says I can't because they're in another region. But the Temp On Rez makes sense as well, since the static items belong to a nearby club that seems much too big for the size of land it's on (I should check if they're phantom).

Oh wow, this explains what we saw the other day, I think. Since Search Places is down, I've been having fun randomly porting to geographically interesting looking places on the world map. A friend and I dropped into the middle of this place that looked like the state of Texas on the world map, and while we were fooling around on a hangman we found, we noticed a black-red-and-yellow UFO whizzing by high over head every few seconds. It was midnight in the sim and really gave things a sort of Area 51 feel.

P.S. I'm totally going to go primspotting tonight!

Today I removed several of these "UFO's", by going around the two sims I manage, and hunting for scripts that normally would have fish rotating sedately around them. (My UFO's have all clearly been fish.)

I searched for them by turning on beacons for scripted objects, and checking any site that wasn't clear as to what it was, or which seemed incomplete of malfunctioning.

I found several fish that I had placed some time earlier, and which had worked flawlessly until this recent few updates. Sure enough, the base was there, but one or more prims that *should* have been locked in a 2M radius orbit around the root prim were missing... until I edited the oblect - at which point they snapped back to where they belonged. As soon as I released edit, ZOOM! Fantasticly fast Frantic Flying Fish! Two of them seemed to be moving at high speed around the rim of the sim, and even appeared to ve way out into a void sim beyond the sim edge. Not in an "Openspaces" low-prim sim, but actually in areas where there ARE no sims.

I went to each rezzer and removed the malfunctioning ones. Not all were temp on rez, but all of them DID involve some sort of rotation script. Problem resolved. Anyone hungry for sushi? I've got a lot of freshly dead fish to deal with!

While searching, I also encountered what I would have to call "Radar Echoes" of objects that appeared to be floating in space, beyond the edge of the sim. They would appear and vanish capriciously, but weren't moving. When I tried to edit one to ID it, I got a security system warning, telling me to vacate a parcel that I was NOT inside of!

I see signs flying in an orbit pattern and misc objects. I know where the signs look like thsy cam from, but they are nto something th eowner did.
It all started after the update with the bugs. I can chase after them and if i hit them with my Av, they dissapear and don't show up again till i leave the orbit area they follow. Other say they don't see them, but i do all the time. The ones i see are in an orbit thru 4 sims total.

Yeah I saw that too.... I message Cubey but I don't think he got it. It's flying around the sandboxes and vehicle sims.

After reading through some of the previous posts, I can only assume it is a land scanner that I have zipping endlessly in circles around my parcel, it looks like a satellite and is ANNOYING THE #$%#% outta me! If anyone knows on a way to catch it so that I may id it then please spread the butter, the only thing I can think of is to purposely attempt to lag and try catching it when it FPS drops to a point where it will permit me to catch it. It may sound foolish but I would like to find a resolution and this is the only one I can think of.

Has anyone bug reported this?
12-08-2006 20:41
Has any of you who have actually seen the UFO's filed a formal bug report?
I don't know if the Lindens even READ this forum...
There are (I think) known issues with both Temp on Rez and llTargetOmega.

These seem to be Reproducible Instances (including photos) that might be invaluable to the Lindens laboring to fix this..

Well, last night I "caught" three more "UFO's" - All were my own fish, acting incorrectly. Not land scanners. Not strange hostile objects. Just normal rotating linksets - like club lights, or rotating signs, or fish - acting incorrectly because of a server side glitch.

Here is how to catch and ID these strange objects:

I saw these objects moving on a large radius arc at extreme speed, and placed myself in the path, so they would be coming almost head-on at me and would thus remain in the same area of the screen for a while, in spite of their velocity. Then I right-clicked them, which froze them in place. At that point you can try 'edit' to ID who they belong to, and can do a "take" if they are yours, or "return" if they are not yours but the item's on your land. Note that even though they are orbiting a position far from your property, it is the entire linkset that is moving through your area, so Return SHOULD function, if they are over your land.

Note: I DEFINITELY, without any doubt at all, captured three of these things, and was able to take them back into my inventory, intact. Here is what I found.

All three cases were a simple rotating object linkset, consisting of a central root prim and two other prims, all in one linkset, scripted to rotate around the root prim. Nothing fancy that could have had a variable radius for the orbit or a variable velocity. The malfunctioning fish were ALL simple objects that should slowly rotate at a fixed speed.

The code for the objects is no-mod, so I can't tear into it. But I am 99% certain that what happened is that these normally placid objects suddenly were being incorrectly processed by SL, causing the entitre linkset to move in a HUGE radius arc around the intended position of the linkset, with an angular velocity equal to its normal rotation speed. With a much larger radius and the same angular velocity, they linkset moves at high speed.

It's NOT a client-side issue, as multiple people can be in the sim and will see it at the same instant. (Tested by personal experience).

I placed one of the captured items back in-world, and observed it. The item now behaved normally. Taking it back into inventory and placing it back in-world fixed it. This was true for all three that I captured last night.

I have those three linksets in my inventory now. I can ID the maker, so the Linden bug team can contact her for access to the code. Now we need to get the bug hunters to examine a KNOWN CASE of one of these malfunctioning scripts, so they can determine what it is on the server side that is causing this.

I have bug reported it, yes.

Nothing new about scripted objects getting stuck in infinite cross-sim orbit, but there is something new about this situation. There were what looked like two avatars in a huge orbit at about 400m above gualala a few days ago...and I spent about fifteen minutes trying to select them. I finally got my camera to follow them (a single object textured with two avatars) with alt+click, but when I then right clicked and selected edit -- wham! -- the cam shot right down to ground level in somebody's store. This object was a rotating advertisement and was clearly on the ground all the time...but due to some bizarre bug, they appeared (to me) to be flying through the sky until I selected them.

Edit: Hmm, the relevance of this object being a linkset never occurred to me until Ceera's post.

It is client side, effected by server updates. In effect, the server tells the client when to screw up =^.^=

I have one of these circling a sim in which I own land. It appears to be a sign from a nearby club.

Seems rather senseless to have this sign circling constantly since it moves very quickly and seems not to rez completely.

This really bugs me since my teleporters are affected by the parcel full bug while the sign seems to have no trouble at all.

I have wanted to capture it to AR the owner but no luck so far.

I don't understand why people feel entitled to create these senseless things, all they demonstrate is -- on a large scale -- their foolishness and immaturity.

I've also encountered this... over TEAL and SLATE... but the 'light cones' were smaller, more spotlight-like, and only a pair, not a trio.

I was able to capture and return one easily, the other vanished the moment I tried to grab it and didn't come back.

I would have made more of it except I was trying to track down a different "large draw distance bug" which causes prims in a nearby region to appear echoed INCORRECTLY in other nearby regions. Most fade away as you approach... tried sitting on one (standing next to it) and was told it was in a different region. Bumped into it and it vanished.

I can't help but wonder if these large orbit lights are prims that are appearing from other sims incorrectly and llTargetOmega()-ing around their original location at some larger offset.

Anyway, it's curious... and baffling.

As far as I understand, the UFOs are a bug. I wouldn't be so quick on the AR button, as the owner of the club has most likely set up his sign to rotate *inside* his club, not on your place -- but it's been borked. Not his fault.

Try contacting him nonetheless so he can take it back into his inventory.

I observed a thing whizzing by several times from my little plot - looked like a simple flat square. I assumed someone had made a spinning object out of 2 linked parts and then moved them both equidistant from the roatation point.

I've got one near me as well and I can't catch it. It seems to be some sort of 'echo' from a nearby lighthouse but as far as I can tell nabbing the lightbeam from the lighthouse does nothing.

What's even worse is that I'm the only one who's noticed it! Every time I try to point it out to someone it stops (it doesn't seem very constant). So everyone thinks I'm hallucinating!

Probably not connected but just as odd...a good portion of one of my neighbor's home blinks in and out. This is even visible in the minimap (the rotating object never shows in the minimap).

I think I'm in a haunted sim. O___O

We have a lighthouse cone passing through Pruni as well. It is coming from the Sim next door Sesia. I was able to stop the cone and pinpoint the owner.

Also seen an odd shaped prim to the South and was able to locate a Radar tower it was coming from.

This also seems in some cases to be made even more confusing by the presence of a second glitch - 'radar echoes' of objects that appear to be a short distance beyond the sim boundry (possibly even in a position where there IS no sim!), while the actual object is somewhere else. These apparitions often vanish as you approach, or if you change your angle of view. But if they appear to be stationary, and if you select them without moving, you can sometimes ID the owner successfully. I would expect that some of the fast moving things that appear to move beyond the edge of the sim are also moving on an orbit within the sim, and you're seeing an "echo" of them past the sim edge. I would especially suspect this if the fast moving things seem to flicker in and out of existance as they move. One set of fish I was hunting did that, and when I caught a "different set" in the sim, the ones dancing beyond the sim border also vanished forever.

Recently I was trying to change the group ownership of some parts of my land. Sadly, I miscalculated and a bunch of my items were returned because I borked the prim limits. However, my house and my SexGen bed were missing for three days. Finally they were returned to my lost and found folder because they "went off world" three sims away. Perhaps they were flying around in the atmosphere all that time.
