It's a virus! Don't buy it!

I'm writing this on my notebook since I don't dare to boot my computer again. I installed the CopyBot for test purposes only, to see if anyone can copy my avatar that I spent weeks on, with many self-created things like an own shape, own eyes and such. Now my comp is pretty much useless. Each time I go online it downloads new trojans and other stuff and my anti-virus software can't get rid of it fast enough. I stayed offline, made a complete scan, and after rebooting the viruses are back. It even infects my software and Norton had to delete Trillian and other programs that I purchased online and never backed up. Now I can re-install XP and buy most of my shareware again! Don't fall for this scam!

I wonder if it's only the SLExchange version or if the original CopyBot was infected as well. If you happened to install it, better get rid of it and check your system immediately!

Actually it encourages you to use an alt. Try scanning it with any available virus scanning program. Search google if you want one.
Search the classifieds for "Copybot"

Sorry :(

Why do you feel sorry for a hacker? I won't just sit there while someone is selling lockpicks and crowbars to the burglars around my house.

I have to say (at the risk of a kicking...) the scam here is Norton. it's a disaster area. Before you ditch the machine, try www.trendmicro.com/housecall. I've rescued whole infected networks of machines running Norton with this...

And after you think you might be clean (though, I should say, an XP reload is good for the soul...!) install what you see at free.grisoft.com then notice that your machine goes about twice as fast as it did with Norton loaded, and stops a bunch more invaders.

NB: you may be able to kill the viruses by simply de-installing any and all Sun Java entries you find in add/remove control panel. then run the disinfects, and put Java back again afterwards...

Look at a hacker complaining about lies. It hurts when something hinders the sale of your products, doesn't it? Guys, this software was developed by a hacker and asks you for your account data and password! The phishing attempt alone should show everyone what kind of software we're talking about.

Wasn't there a blog entry about a phishing website lately? This was shut down pretty soon, as I remember.
Well, here we have a content duping tool with a full permission hack plus a phishing function, and LL doesn't do anything about it! How ridiculous is that? Not to speak of the potential virus danger. Do you really trust a guy who sells tools to rip off other residents enough to install his software?

Why do you treat this guy like a fellow resident? He's selling exploits that severely hurt the whole economy! Please file exploit reports instead of rewarding this accomplice in theft with a single friendly word.

I didn't create it, I'm helping sell it. It asks for you password because that's how the program works, it will not be able to log you in without it. READ the notecard that's with it, it says to make an alt to use. Do you think the DMCA reports are nothing???

I refer to my other post:

DONT GIVE UR SL PASSWORD OUT TO ANYONE OR ANYTHING and that includes alt accounts because even tho they may be devoid of L$ hackers can still use them to do other things in SL :)

Okay, first of all... the OP here is a lie, pure and simple. Nobody's computer is infected because of CopyBot, and CopyBot is not a phishing program.

If you really have a problem with CopyBot, then use legitimate channels to complain. Combatting what you see as unethical behavior with more lies only undermines your own credibility.

Anyone who uses the words "virus" or "phishing" in relation to CopyBot is simply making things up to scare people, and no longer has any credibility. It's apparent that you are quite happy to lie about something in order to advance your own agenda, and you have therefore become no better than this "Go" person.

Think about it.

I agree with the Doc on this one the one but the one thing i hate the most is FREEBIE sellers as "Geforce Go" is, so for those that want to take a look a look at it they can get it from this URL :

http://primrevolution.110mb.com/copybot-1.0.zip

and before anyone jumps on me for posting the URL i copied it from the Blog answers as i hate to think some are cashing in on people by selling a freebie item ;)

But remember by loading it up is against the LL TOS so user beware!

Is this gonna be a bad day for SL well we will see!

Peace

Of course it is. That's already been sufficiently proven. Nothing that causes this much outcry can be in doubt, can it?

What remains to be seen is the extent of the damage. I personally am optimistic, but I feel as if I'm in a very small minority with that outlook :(

Well of course it can. Please look closely at the past posts of the one's preaching doom and gloom on this topic. They are proven wrong every single day because of thier forecasts that this is going to be the end of SL. Please do some resaerch on GLIntercept and texture theft and look at the posts saying it was the end. Please do some searching for the end of dwell posts and how they were preaching that the end was near. Now the same is also said because of LL stopping teacher pay. Please do a forum search for Prim Mirror and how everyone said it was going to be the end. This program does not do half of the stuff that people are saying it can. It is a "fancier" version of Prim Mirror which some people still have in thier inventories. It does not matter that Prim Mirror was changed. It was released and people and still have the original and could have been doing this the whole time. THEY DIDN"T THOUGH. Stores are making more money now then they ever have. You would have to be stupid to stop creating and sales now in SL. There are 14,000+ people online at most times now. Please let one store come here and say "My sales have been hurt".

Well, did LL publicly defend and approve GLIntercept?

And as far as sales being hurt, give it a few days to where all the thievers get this thing and have a chance to go around copying. I'd say in about a week, we'll start seeing sales drop once these people start getting a hold of it in mass.

Maybe not drop to nothing, but I'd bet a Linden they'll drop if this thing gets around.

There's NOTHING to stop them from doing it. Now, the free resource hogs that do nothing in SL can get this item, drag out asset servers even more, and we are still stuck paying for thier use and now they don't even have to pay to get out of the newb look.

Isn't the name 'Geforce' a brand name anyway, and as such shouldn't even be used in SL?

Helping sell it? Something that was once freely available?
How many of those selling it are giving anything back to the creators?

Like the huge prims, it'll soon be free as well.

There are a few of us that are ever optimsitic, the thing that irks me is the way it was introduced to SL, LLs need better PR imho and the fact some jerk is selling it when its clearly available for free.

Also Hawk Splash posted a note to the blog after testing it out (Quoted Blog Entry below)

"hawk Splash Says:

November 14th, 2006 at 4:49 am
ok ive read all your blog listings comments and stuff and got pretty concernd myself about this thing as im a builder in sl so i decided to go waste 3000 lindens on this thing to put your minds at ease firstly to use the program you have to have an alternate account secondly when you do get online with it and you clone an avatar or object that avatar is wearing it does clone an exact copy of the av i tried this with my alt but the one priority id like to adress here is the fact it does clone all attachments that your wearing it wont take or theif anything thats been made by another user even if it isnt no copy no mod and no transfer because it wont allow the copy of the uuid number of the object you try to copy to be copied from the inventory
also the avatars shape height settings and skin are not left in your alts inventory when you log back in to sl with that name you used to be the copy bot all scripted objects that you had on the alt become invalid the scripts are automatically invalid and removed on copying and this also results in the objects being called object yes it does make the persons name the creator but no the objects can not be claimed as that persons because it says unknown creator which is greyed out so your concerns about anyone stealing your work are not neccesary because they can not be used they all become invalid i also tried to copy an object just basic box with a bling script in it gave my alt av my mod rights everything possible i could edit the object on my alt unlink it but the big no no is when going to contents to your suprise those that think they get an exact replica that will work and can be sold think again because all scripts are removed regardless of the settings all objects that are named are called object in the inventory
Hair skin and clothing revert back to the hair skin and clothing and shape you originally had on that av to start with the only thing funny about that program is it clones anyones av while on the program but when logged out of the alt and back into sl on that alt yes your minds are thinking OH NO they got my work errrrr stop the tape there because nope they didnt why? because 1 the object they copied is now called object they dont know which is which 2nd the objects scripts are missing so for those of you that wana go wasting money on this program good luck because you aint gona get nowhere trying to copy skins hair and attachments that dont belong to ya so people as a person that has just wasted lindens take my advice you have nothing at all to worry about it doesnt even copy textures lol so thumbs up to you all and bad luck the creator of this program in my words IT SUCKS!!!!!! "

So in the words of Hawk Splash as posted "IT SUCKS" :)

I hope more people go & test it themselves to see the results if they are worried. One final point is SL wants to head to an open source 3D web and as in all things change is inevitable and we move with it or die, they (LL) have made some silly choices lately but i see SL as a child and children often make mistakes as they grow and learn.

It happened in the late 80s and early 90s as we moved from usenet, AOL, CIS etc. to browsers and the net as we know it now, people said it would be the death of it but im still around having fun in this new enviroment which is a new platform full of teething problems and i always remember to never invest more than i can afford to lose in this new area of communications :)

Ever the optimist

Peace :)

Where do you think GG got it? He got it for free from an open source.

Anybody with a copy of Visual C# or #Develop can compile it and publish it... if they have a copy of the (now deleted) source file.
