I try hard not to do too much empathy because it costs me money; it’s a bad habit I tell you! And sad to relate I cannot bring myself to fake it either. So it seems I am doomed -:)

My empathy doesn't cost me money.

RL I have been promoted because of it though, so you could say that empathy has made me money.

Of course, my empathy has cost me lots in terms of time.

I can see you were trying to make a useful point John, but a little slack for people huh?

(See my profile inworld for comments re grammar :) )

Just a little comment on Empathy (in general, not specific to the question in this thread):

The advantage of using EMPATHY as the guiding principle of one's life is that one can always claim the moral high ground and present oneself as a GOOD PERSON.

The disadvantage is that empathy is often the enemy of rational analysis, and therefore, ultimately, of justice and fairness.

The empathic will tend to be swayed by each sad story brought to their attention, and empathy feels no need to listen to the other side of that story. Nor can empathy spend time on the possibility that its target may be paranoid, deluded, malicious, self-centred or just blind to the bigger issues at stake.

True concern for others does not reside in uncritically adopting the point of view of each plausible complainer you meet. This attitude is only really appropriate for children, whose main concern is to be liked, and who need not ever take any actual responsibility by participating in a real decision-making process constrained by the need to achieve a just and fair practical result.

Hmm possibly true ... course, that's assuming that someone being able to see other people's point of view is also gullible and easily lead.

Not much use to anyone really.

Having concern for others is not the same as being at the mercy of others. Ask anyone who really knows me how much crap I take for even a second!

There are many answers on this, but I was just thinking a couple of things.

It is harrassment IMO, and they have no right to go to the extremes they have.

And I was honestly just wondering if you had notified or told the business owners you were going to charge just a small ammount for the items? I didn't have time to read through this whole thing without spending an hour, so I don't know if that was answered. If you didn't notify them or ask, I could understand them being upset a bit, but it sounds to me like the culprit isn't even the business owners, just some resident out to make themselves look better.

Bottom line is, whoever is doing this to you has taken it too far. People like this are just purely mean. Other than trying to talk to LL, I don't know what you can do to help fix this situation. It seems like a really sticky mess and I'm saddened to learn of some of the outrageous extremes some will go to to sabbotage a person who was only trying to do something sincere and nice.

Best of luck with all of this. Also, on a side note, you will never be banned from my land for something like this. I think some people are just ban happy, and it sucks. If you are still running your freebie store after all this, feel free to contact me, as I will be happy to donate a few of my own things to this good cause.

My opinion. This is griefing.

Sarah Nerd is both a brand and a person.

Ravenglass Rentals is a brand and Prokofy Neva is the person who owns that brand. Prokofy Neva could get griefed all day long, and that would really suck, but it has a limited impact on his brand. When griefers started using Ravenglass Rentals in their grief attacts, that's when they started impacting his business.

This is an attempt to tarnish your name, which by default will tarnish your brand and thus your business.

What’s a money tree? =P

I am new to SL. A couple days ago somebody told me about "the shelter" and there were some nice people that gave me some skins and stuff.

I also found some other newbie place with freebies. There are so many free things out there; I still haven’t had a chance to try everything on.

I can't really comment on the "selling" of this freebie stuff since I don’t really understand how to get money from these money trees yet - but I can tell you that I don’t have a dime to spend on anything or any idea how to make money aside from upgrading my account (not gonna happen at this point).

As nice as it is that people make things or give things away, there will always be that element that will try to take advantage of our (noobies like me) ignorance.

Don't really know where I was going with this - I just wanted to express how thankful I am for all the nice and generous people I have met that have helped me. And shame on anybody that takes somebody else’s work they donated to the community and tries to sell it to new members who don’t know any better. I don’t think it gets much lower than that.

Well EVERY Designer who has contacted me has been super cool, and I've even been given more items. Only part that sucks is the fact that I have to do damage control with my rep because a few nosey people decided to make a few very broad assumptions and go a pointless mission to take me down. At least most (not all) are willing to judge me based on my dealings with them and not just base views of me on the ramblings of 2 randoms. Thanks to everyone for the views and help. It helped us format my place in a way that I think should make everyone happy, or at least the majority, and thats the best I can do. Thank You all again!

Been awhile since I checked this thread but thats great news!! You go GIRL!!

There is NOTHING wrong with what Sarah is doing!

Sarah,

I have sold land to you in the past and it really helped me out b/c I needed to get rid of the land at the moment. Furthermore, she wa extremely nice and polite. There is nothing wrong with selling these items if she has permission from the shop owners who donated them even if she wasn't putting it into a money tree. She is using her time to gather items as well as HER LAND to sell these items for 1L. These people harassing her obviously have no sl life of their own to worry about. I for one wouldn't care if she sold my items for 1L and kept the 1L. She is still helping newbies out and providing me with advertisement. So what if she eats a little of her cost with the 1L???

For the person who commented on spelling and grammar, give her a break. She was obviously upset when she posted this.

Sarah, I will be contacting you in world when I have a moment and donating some things from my shop. It helps out newbies plus gives advertisement for the designers shop.

Also, when I was new I never once asked anyone to give me anything or money. If I came across free stuff great, but I wouldn't ask. It amazes me how many newbies have asked me to give them free stuff or money. If they don't ask, I will usually give them things. I always help anyone when I can but it is VERY rude to ask people to give you objects or money. Lindens are hard to come buy.
